Sharks Joburg bound for semi

This year the Sharks face a prospect that they’ve not encountered for many years – pretty much in living memory for all but the most senior of players.

For the first time since 2006, the Sharks will be away for the Currie Cup semi-final. They face the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon in what is basically uncharted territory for them in the recent past, with every Currie Cup campaign from 2007 through to 2013 delivering a second-placed finish at worst. Lions coach Johan Ackermann will remember that 2006 loss against the Free State well; he played in it, after all and was shown a yellow card as the Sharks lost 14-30.

The only members of the current Currie Cup squad to see action that day were, unsurprisingly, Jacques Botes and Odwa Ndungane.

In the other semi-final, table-topping Western Province will play the Blue bulls at Newlands.

The Johannesburg game kicks off at 14h30, with the Cape Town encounter starting at 17h00, both on Saturday.

  • With Whitely back and pulling the strings that Lions side is very tough to beat in the CC. They have a very good tight 5 and dangerous outside backs, and Boshoff to kick points. If the Sharks try to force ridiculous passes and keep giving away penalties it will be a very very long day. In semi finals/ finals the team with the best defense and discipline usually wins

  • Happy birthday, Rob!

I hope that one or both of the Lions tightheads get included in the Bok Squad for the EOYT. They’ve both been outstanding. I’d like to see Jannie play the games against Ireland and England and then get rested completely with new tightheads tried out.

@ChrisS (Comment 9) : With Marcel van der Merwe and Frans Malherbe (not sure about his injury) already the back-up tightheads the chances of HM selecting any of the Lions props are slim

  • @Baylion (Comment 10) : @Zibbie (Comment 11) : It’s never too early to dream

I don’t think that it’s likely but I’d like it to happen. They’ve both been outstanding and deserve a chance to show what they can do! Our problem at the Bok level is that we don’t always create depth and competition for places. Look how much better JP Pietersen is playing now that Cornal Hendricks has taken his jeresy. Schalk Burger, Mahoje and Marcell Coetzee have all upped their games after getting chance through injuries to Flouw and Alberts and that has created insane competition for places.

Jannie is overplayed and I think he’s complacent after 4 years of no competition for his jersey.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 12) : Question: Would Habana have retained his place in the All Black team (assuming he was playing for them) on his form from 2008-2011? Would JPP have retained his position?

The All Blacks are the best team in the world because they create competition for places. We entrench our players regardless of form and give them a season or two to rediscover their form  :???:

  • Bit sad that with such a great record of log finishes that the Sharks did not win the trophy more times during this period! ?!?!?!
