Sharks need to “have a go”

I’m not sure if I’m in the minority here, but I haven’t felt quite so relaxed about an upcoming Currie Cup semi-final in many a year.

Perhaps it’s just a case of trying to make the best of a bad situation, but certainly the crushing weight of expectation that comes with playing a semi-final at home – and thus being expected to prevail – is missing this year. It’s not that I’ve written the Sharks off, or anything, but rather that I’m preparing to watch the game with no real pressure, since (according to most) the result is already a foregone conclusion.

While we as fans are understandably loath to ever accept that our team is anything but the best, a sober look at this year’s Currie Cup campaign reveals that the Lions and Western Province have set the pace and led throughout. It’s true that the Sharks have recovered nicely enough and appear to be finding some form at the right time, but the Lions, who may have lost more games than the Sharks but have all the same won far more convincingly when they have won, surely deserve their billing as favourites going into this game. I wouldn’t quite go so far as to use the word “travesty”, but there may be a slight feeling of injustice, even, should the Sharks manage to burgle a win this weekend.

Not that there isn’t much reason for optimism, though. The Sharks have form on their side too – it may not be the sort of ostentatious “six tries in every game” form hat the Lions boast, but the Sharks haven’t been on the losing side in six weeks now and perhaps even more crucially, managed to beat the Lions not two weeks back. The shoe will be on the other foot this week, of course, with a stronger Lions outfit playing at home and only a fool would expect the same sort of Sharks performance to deliver the same result. That said, it would take the same sort of fool to insist that this Sharks side is playing the best rugby they are capable of.

No, the Sharks continue to be a work in progress and to the joy and frustration of their fans, it’s often quite hard to predict exactly what you’re going to get from them each week. I, for one, am happy to sit back and watch matter unfold at Ellis Park, knowing that the team have already performed pretty much to expectation in this horrendously disrupted campaign and can now only exceed that expectation.

Good luck, Sharks. Have a go…. We know you’re good enough to win this, but will be right with you at the end, regardless of whether you do or not.

  • Perfect opportunity to throw the proverbial kitchen sink at the lions. If we lose, let’s lose while playing entertaining rugby! And if we try some silly stuff and win, that’s good as well.

  • Please all remember the CC final last year. On paper we have great bunch of young players. It is n their hands. Never write the Sharks off. We must believe – GO BOYS!!!!!

I have to raise two more issues.

We must kindly ask Cell C to remove the TV add with Jake’s face in it and not sure John Smith should be portrayed as a highroller/jetsetter/playboy ?

Jake White and Tonga ? He was with the brumbies for 2 years, he f.. us around for 1 year and now Tonga? H ehas surely lost the plot or nobody else wants him ? Never comment about him again.

  • Playing in a semi at Ellis park def wont be easy. Lions have attacking threats from 6 till 15 with a strong tight 5. If Sharks can disrupt the Lions rucks and mauls and then not turn over balls at rucks we should stay in it till the end. However, giving away easy turnovers and missed tackles could mean a cricket score in the end to be honest

  • The Lions and to a lesser degree Province are basically playing their Super rugby teams in the Currie Cup,Lions minus their very inspirational captain but otherwise in tact.
Province are missing de Villiers but he missed a large part of Super rugby,Ethebeth who played no Super rugby, and their big loss Vermullen, but other than that, they are largely playing their first team
Sharks on the other hand are definitely not the Super rugby team,we are missing,7 players to the Bok team,we lost Kanko,Keegan, Deysel,Frans Steyn, Mc Cleod, overseas and then PSDT, to injury.Yes we got Reinarch and Lawazi back for the playoffs but they were also gone for a large part of the campaign.
And you know what the fuck is so wonderful I still believe we can win this thing

  • Lets be honest if we had BDP, JDP, Marcel, Pat, Willem, Mvovo and beast back we would be firm favorites.

I am probably more optimistic than most this weekend. We have two flyhalves who can play a very territorial based game of rugby and the last 3 weeks we have probably the best defensive lineout in the competition.

We have contested at the rucks superbly and we are getting go forward ball again. If we can maintain that and put some effort into our scrums this weekend, I think we are pretty difficult to beat

AND NO Im not changing it just to include Lambie. Pollard is a genuinely powerful and physical player. While Lambie is the smarter…

Put them both in and BOOOOOM…

    9.
    10. Lambie
    11.
    12. Pollard
    13. Serfontein/Sithole
    14.
    15. Le Roux

    - I still dont fancy the 9s yet for consistency or tactical skill.and we have plenty wingers if Habs retires
