Mixed feelings as season comes to an end

Well, that’s it as far as Sharks rugby is concerned for the year.

I’ve been battling a little bit since Saturday to work out exactly how I feel about the current state of affairs. I mean, it’s not like we were particularly confident about the prospects of either the senior or under 19 sides, heading into tough away semi-final encounters. The result in Joburg (and also in Pretoria to a lesser extent) was expected, but perhaps not the margin of the eventual loss.

I find myself having a very real “what now” feeling when it comes to Sharks rugby: the performance in the semi-final, as a microcosm of the season as a whole, once again leaves me with more questions than answers.

We’re now 18 months into the brave new world of Sharks Rugby under John Smit and while we’ve had lots and lots of change, it’s really hard to say definitively that things look a lot better than they did before. We continue to cling to hope for the future, but with some strong headwinds coming next year (in the form of an expected mass exodus of senior players) it’s probably safe to say that most fans are rather nervous indeed. We’ll postulate more on some of these concerns as the long off-season runs its course and hope to come up with some answers.

For now, though I’d like to wish everyone involved a really good break – players, coaches and administrators. It’s going to be pretty short indeed, since pre-season starts next month, but for now, all we can say is that we hope you guys enjoy the down time and come back refreshed and ready for another big push in 2015. We, your fans, will be there with you every step of the way, as we always have been.

  • Same this side. I just feel the whole Jake White thing set us back. I was never positive about it except for the fact that I was hoping he would steer us to lift that Super Rugby trophy.

Plumtree was doing more than fine; I believe he might be the most successful Sharks coach in recent times if you look at CC and Super Rugby performance? If not ever?

  • I think the manner of the loss only highlighted the fans concerns. And yes we get quite a few Boks back for Super rugby so that may paper over the cracks. However, more intelligent people are looking beyond Super rugby 2015 and the post world cup exodus and thinking now what?? Smitty and Co need to lay some solid plans regarding players, coaching, stadium etc. All that on the back of the audit of the Sharks franchise means i wouldnt like to be in his shoes come board meetings.

  • While I do agree that a big change is needed, I don’t believe Plum is the answer. Yes, we won a few CC’s under him, but in all the years that he spent with us, we have yet to lift the SR trophy. It is the sort of “been there, done that. Tried and tested” scenario. Of course people will say “if he only had another year or so..” sad reality is, he had more than enough years with all the resources at his disposal. Yet no results. Don’t get me wrong, he is a good coach for sure, but I just don’t think he is what we need right now. And as far as I am aware, he is not even an option? Is he?
Must say, I am pleased to see the time Smitty and co. is taking with the new appointment. Shows that they are properly and thoroughly thinking this one through..

  • John Mitchell for Head Coach. Thought this decision would have already been made by now. Took the Wallabies 24 hours to get a new coach.

  • I think pride is what is needed in the jersey, get people who wants the union to do good not just to receive a paycheck at the end of the day.

  • I think this was a sad end to the season… but my personal opinion is that Jake White is a real asshole!!! I think that the Sharks union must hold him responsible for the outcome!!!
It looks like he is busy developing a reputation of somebody that bails when things don’t go according to the Jake White way…. a huge ball of crap!!

Well enough said… hopefully we will see young Reinach more on the field for the Boks!!

  • Just on another note; a bit off topic. But I went to see the Sharks vs Lions at the beginning on the month. The atmosphere was non existent. No braais, no entertainment, no family aspect at all. It is such a stark contrast to the Kings Park I used to know.

  • @Shred (Comment 2) :I agree wholeheartedly about what you said about Plum. No coach has EVER been spoken about for so long after his departure. I don’t think it will stop here either.

Robdylan I feel exactly the same way you appear to feel. Absolutely DEFLATED!

  • @MJ (Comment 13) : Mitchell has actually been very successful if you are only looking at on field results. He has won more than most coaches and been given a very short time to do it in. Before him you have to go back over 30 years to find an All Black coach as successful. He took the Lions to Currie Cup glory. Not many Lions coaches have managed that. If you are talking about making friends at the various rugby unions he has coached at you are probably spot on.

She has now taken the case to the CCMA so all hell should break loose any moment now.

  • Is your decision not to discuss open for discussion?

I’m interested to know how you view sharksworld. As a media outlet or a fan forum? If the former, you have a social obligation to explore these issues. If the latter, I’m of the opinion that open discussions will ultimately benefit the Sharks.

Maybe the lawyers here can tell us about libel risks. In the USA it’s pretty hard to successfully sue the media for libel. I’ve read that the UK is the other way around. What about the SA media laws that created some controversy a few years ago? Can someone sue sharksworld for libellous posts I make? Where will they sue? Where I, the website, the site’s owner or the plaintiff reside?
