  • It does sound good for now.Dont know much about Gary but he seems to be a very nice and solid guy and that’s obviously the reason why Brendan agreed to get on board.Just wish this group had an extra 2 or 3 years with players like Beast and Bissie.

  • @JD (Comment 8) : Well this is a huge correctional step in the right direction. Create a great environment for the players where they enjoy coming to “work” and feel like they are going in the right direction then far more will stay.

Can compare it to my job, where I haven’t looked for anything else or updated my cv in the 6 years I’ve been there. The reason is simply that I really enjoy it, and consider my colleagues and boss as awesome mates.

  • @robdylan (Comment 4) : The thing is that guys like Beast, Bissie and Jannie has given so much to the Sharks and SA rugby in general, you feel they deserve a nice two or three year retirement contract at one of those little French clubs!

  • @tigershark (Comment 10) : It’s true. Definitely wouldn’t begrudge them that… Then again, would obviously love it if they stayed.

  • Well, he is saying the right things at least.

His coaching history and record all just seems a little ordinary and lacking in any noticeable success. Let’s hope he can make the step up to one of the biggest rugby jobs in the world. The fans expect much.

Hopefully the smooth talk can be translated into results. Let’s wait and see…

I am glad that Venter will have some involvement again.

  • @Justin Koelman (Comment 13) : We were gonna win Super 15 the moment Smitty was installed as boss, and Plum was shafted. This became more of a definate when we won the Currie Cup but it really beacame a 100% definate , positive sure thing when Jake became the main ou at the tank. Go back, read the comments – we were invincible….yeah right.

  • As for we, I would just welcome a bit of sanity and lots of introspection from the powers that be….maybe a few apologies wouldnt be amiss either (not gonna happen)

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 15) : Not really how it works in rugby, is it? You get a fine or a suspension or you get sent away with a slap on the wrist and a gold watch on the other one. If you’re a ref you apparently get a heart-to-heart in private. At the end of it all you get a book deal. But never, under any circumstance, do you apologise. :D

  • I just want to throw out a thank you to rob for keeping us informed the quality of the info is so much better than other sources. I for one would like to get more info on our leadership since it’s probably the biggest area of change we will see for the next while.

  • Just my 2c on the guys asking about new signings I do think we have a great pool of talent already. A good decision to focus the budget a little more on the coaching staff. WP and Bulls a good indication of where there is ample talent but not enough focus on coaching.

  • So now that the dust has settled on this year’s Currie Cup, what did you make of the new two-group format?

I did not like it. One, the team composition was distorted enough (will always be the case with an odd number of strong teams) that the Sharks really had it served up to them on a platter to top the log. Griquas, Pumas and Kings along with the Cheetahs? We should have gone unbeaten against all of these teams, certainly the first three. None of these teams finished in the top 4.

Secondly I would have liked to see the Sharks play home and away games against the Bulls, Lions and WP. We missed out.

I’ve got to say, I much prefer a 6 team strength vs strength format. Simple and intense.

  • @Feather (Comment 19) : I don’t like it. However the Sharks managed to loose to two out of the bottom three teams – whom the format was specifically changed for.

  • @Feather (Comment 19) : I’m not in favour of an extended Super Rugby format because in my opinion that’s a competition in which only the best teams should play. I would have much preferred promotion/relegation to trying to accommodate everyone and their cousins. I feel differently about the Currie Cup as it has become a competition in which new talent is unearthed and game plans are tested and developed. I thought the Pumas especially were a welcome addition. I do however miss the fact that we no longer have home and away games against all teams but I can live with it.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 23) : You are correct. Also adding more teams will extend this competition beyond what any 1 squad can manage in terms of player well being and continuity. There will be many injuries and chances are getting better and better that only the teams with maximum depth or luck in terms of short term injuries will get to the final stages. I say keep it short, finish early and allow guys to rest up for other tournaments as well. I have said (it might just be a pipe dream) that SA should consolidate Lions and Bulls. Freestate and Griekwas. Sharks and Kings WP and Boland to present strong teams with great depth.
