Gold comes in – and Venter’s back too!

Sharks fans were dealt a double dose of good news earlier this morning, with the union confirming the appointment of two key men to take matters forward on the field.

As was widely anticipated, former Springbok and Western Province assistant coach Gary Gold was today confirmed as the new Sharks Director of Rugby and will be in the post for at least the next three years.

CEO John Smit also announced that fan favourite and “rugby brain on a stick” Dr Brendan Venter has been officially appointed to a Technical Director role. While it is not yet clear quite how much time on a weekly or monthly basis this role will entail, it remains incredibly positive and encouraging to have Venter’s wealth of experience and acumen available and with he and Gold having an existing working relationship, we’re expecting much synergy from the two appointments.

Speaking of Gold, Smit said, “Gary is an experienced coach who brings a wealth of knowledge and an impressive level of commitment to his new role. Having worked closely with him in the Springbok set-up, I found him to be approachable with a high regard for player welfare and management as well as meticulous attention to detail in regard to the game. We are delighted that he has agreed to join The Sharks family.”

“The team environment he [Brendan Venter] created and the success he achieved with us in a short space of time speaks volumes about his character, commitment and general rugby acumen,” the CEO added. “As I have previously stated, we will do whatever we can to keep him involved with us for as long as possible.”

  • Great! Now we have some good rugby brains, hopefully a DOR that can get along with the players and manage them and good supporting coaches. Hope they start planning SR domination!

  • Come on!! Get behind it Sharks fans!!! I think this is a good thing. It may also show that Jake was not the players favourite. JS emphasised that Gary Gold is good with player welfare. Maybe JS had to work through his loyalty to Jake. Interested to hear what happens with the assistants. I personally would like to see them bring their own people in rather than using BMH and crew by default.

Ample time to build an empire with BV that we as Sharks fans can be proud of. Back to winning ways, more sponsors, bums on seats, trophies in cupboards. All the best Gold! We stand firmly behind you.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 21) : That is a good question, I suspect its a similar role BV has with Saracens, I am sure there is a DoR there with BV giving Technical assistance.

Looking at the Club officials at Saracens:
    Chairman: Nigel Wray
    Chief Executive: Edward Griffiths
Directors: Jannie Durand, Nick Leslau, Dominic Silvester
    Technical Director: Brendan Venter
Director of Rugby/1st Team Coach: Mark McCall
    Forwards Coach: Alex Sanderson
Defence and Forwards Coach: Paul Gustard
    Backs Coach: Kevin Sorrell
    Skills Coach: Joe Shaw
Kicking Coach and Physio: Dan Vickers

    BV does exactly that.

But I believe we give the man a chance, we may be pleasantly surprised, and with Venter there I think we will do just fine.

Hopefully things change and we see a well-balanced game plan tailored to suit the available players, real time team adaptability, decent player management, player BMT and, my biggest wish, to see the old Natal rugby passion back at Kings Park.

  • For those of you that are unsure or do not know a lot about Gary Gold, I can assure you the guy knows his stuff. He is technically very astute and is a thinking coach who adapts tactics and picks up on opposition weaknesses well. His forte is forward coaching, and he is very well liked by players in general. He did a superb job at Bath and although all the details of his dismissal have not come out, it was mainly to do with the fact Bath were so top heavy with experienced coaches so there was bound to be a disagreement in methodology/strategy, clashes over who is the boss etc.

He also impressed immensely in his latter stages with the Boks. Speak to all the forwards who worked with him and they are full of praise. Wait till you guys hear his first few interviews, I GUARANTEE you will be impressed. He is articulate and knows what he wants from his team.

My guess is his first job will be to sort out the Tight 5 as you can’t win games going backwards, like we saw against the Lions in the semi. And Gary is BIG on dominating upfront and on precision in set pieces.

This is a VERY exciting appointment. In my view, the best available.

The dwindling crowds in the CC were a combination of factors with the main 2 being the poor quality of rugby the Sharks were dishing up and the awful scheduling. There were a lot of Friday night games which rules out most of the Sharks supporters from PMB/Empangeni/Richards Bay etc.

  • For me the Gold appointment is a huge letdown.Gary Beige, sort of connect him with Alan Solomons and a whole lot of dour, colourless rugby.
nothing wrong and nothing right with this appointment, seems like a safe option, after the potential explosiveness of Jake the snake.
Don’t personally expect more than a middle of the table performance next year.
Might very well be the first time in 20 years that I do not renew my season tickets.

I know I am forgetting one or 2 names but that was players out for Bok duty, injured, PLaying off season in Japan or France or where ever etc.

In other words from our SR squad to CC that was the players out, yes a few of those players played one or 2 CC ganes and that’s it.

Instead of just talking crap, why not go do some actual research and list the top 5 examples where teams succeeded in an environment where the players all hated the coach.

    We’ll be waiting…

They too had to take over during the JW debacle as well as lose a lot of players.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 77) : you are right, SL.

The reason the Sharks ultimately failed to retain the Currie Cup was twofold:

    1) new coaches who didn’t have enough time to implement their plans
    2) new players, most of whom had never played Currie Cup before. New combinations all over the park, new leaders, etc etc.

  • @robdylan (Comment 75) : Why don’t you rather list one examples where a team succeeded, where the players were in control. I never mentioned hating the coach ,my comment was in reply to one about the players dominating the coach. Just off the top of my head,I’d look at Alex Ferguson,a man who ran a team of super stars, but never let any one of them get the better of him.He was always in control.
Last coach the Sharks had like that was probably Ian Mac.

  • @The hound (Comment 82) : Give the guy a chance. I’m pretty sure you will find that Gary Gold is NOT a soft touch and won’t allow the players to dictate to him. However he does foster an environment where players are cared for and enjoy coming to work. One other thing, he’s big on fitness so the Sharks boys will have to put in a huge shift in pre season.

  • All I need for christmas now is confirmation that they will be employing the rotation system that BV is so good at implementing.

Not only would this be good for the Sharks in the long run, but there is another very positive side effect if they do. Namely having extremely key Bok players such as Bismarck, Jannie, Beast, Big Vic, & Marcell not played into the ground pre RWC!

  • @Villie (Comment 84) : I don’t dislike the man,but from where I am sitting on the ground in Durban and a long time Natal rugby supporter.and season ticket holder. Also as some one who has been heavily involved in the Sharks brand,I look on this appointment with a little trepidation.
The biggest threat to the union is game apathy, and anyone who has the slightest knowledge of conditions on the ground will tell you that the attendance figures last season were abysmal.
What is needed here is a huge positive about turn in Sharks rugby,if you want the faithful back, those people whose non flagging spurt made this union what it is,we better start winning again.
Gold appointment to me is one of compromise, one that won’t rock the boat, and challenge all those things that are wrong with this union.Heis a safe choice,a very safe choice.

  • @The hound (Comment 87) : I still recon Sharks should use the CC as a platform to promote rugby instead of having 5000 spectators at a huge stadium like KP, rather bring the games to PMB, Empangeni and Port Shepstone. This is how you will get attendance figures back at the stadium.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 86) : I don’t think you can generalise like that, or accuse players of widespread hatred of coaches.

Let’s look at the case in point…. Jake White. The players did learn to hate him, simply because he treated every one of them like shit.

  • @The hound (Comment 87) : I agree with you about attendances last season, they were abysmal. I was there myself and after the Griquas home game, a whole group of fellow season ticket holders commented that they weren’t going to return for the rest of the season. I couldn’t blame them. The standard of entertainment being dished up was awful and in this day and age with so many choices on offer, attending KP would be low down the list. The whole Kings Park vibe and family entertainment thing seems to have been lost. The number of post and pre match braais has dwindled and I agree it’s all down to apathy.

Unfortunately rugby is now dominated by TV and therefore a number of the Sharks home games were scheduled on Friday nights and awkward Sat afternoon times. No longer the 3pm Saturday afternoon that people were used to. All these things influence attendances.

Gary Gold AND John Smit both have massive jobs to turn this around. It won’t be easy but I believe Gold to be the best choice available. He was never going to be the number 1 choice of every supporter but we now need to get behind him and the team!

  • Upon reading the headline, the term “turbo reverse” momentarily entered my mind.

The disturbing part, is John Smit’s continual reversion to the familiar. If this guy does not work out, who’ll be next? His old high school coach? Why no new ideas or new people? Is it a case of not enough confidence to set his own direction?

He seems to be as unsuitable a CEO as he was a prop in his playing days. A veritable lightweight.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 94) : Whatever case you can make for Plumtree has to be totally negated by just one incident, not only did he play a 25kg overweight Frans Steyn,he compounded it by making him the captain. In the end of his tenure this was not a man in control of his dressing room.

With regards to Frans, he is still to lose a game as captain for the Sharks. Give him some slack. He did a good job of it when he was captain, and we were pretty desperate at the time too.

  • THE BEST NEWS !!! Since I suspected that there were problems under JW. I’m sad that didn’t work. However, maybe it is better having a DOR who is there for the Sharks and not as a stop gap until an international post.
It also the best news that BV will be technical director.
So many positives for a change. And with Jacques Botes in the Academy – things bode well for the Sharks!
