  • Serious question marks over Coenie and Gurthro- i def think there are better guys and they are their on past reputation. Could be a very interesting selection vs Wales in the last game on tour. I pretty much expect the Rugby Championship side to play against Ireland and England

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : I think HM is reaping what he was busy planting last year with the Coenie experimentation, he just does not have a TH he trusts to back Dup in these games hence the recall. I’m stoned at Gurthro’s recall as there are many young and talented, on form LH like van der Merwe,Thomas,Vermaak and any other prop at the Lions.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : Was about to post the same thing regarding Guthro. Coenie, I think could still find form again but should only be played at LH. Interesting to see Goosen listed as a fullback.

Anyway, congrats to the Lions and WP players that made it. Well deserved!

  • Johan Goosen at fullback? Interesting, although I also reckon he does have the attributes (speed, big boot) for that position.

Will Coenie continue his tighthead sojourn, or can we expect him back at loosehead?

  • This squad makes very little sense to me.

    (1) Whats the point of taking 3 number four locks and only one number 5 lock?
    (2) Johan Goosen is a flyhalf so why are we taking 4 flyhalves on tour ?
    (3) JP is primarily a wing who can play center so only 3 centers?

  • @Chippa (Comment 3) : @vanmartin (Comment 4) : I think Marcel VD Merwe his preferred backup but he is injured so he reverted back to old favourite Coenie who is a walking scrum penalty up north. @Bokhoring (Comment 5) : I believe Goosen has been featuring quite favourably at 15 for Racing Metro in a few games. Funny how the NH teams can quickly figured out a guys best position and how they can get the best from them there.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : @Mutley (Comment 7) : Would have replaced Coenie and Gurthro with Schalk vd Merwe and Ruan Dreyer. Both are in form and would add a lot to the Boks.

That said, I think the lack of experienced props in the squad to assist them has forced heyneke’s hand. The problem is that the form props are not the experienced props. I’d still have backed them to front alongside Bismarck or Strauss.

  • Must just say that Warren Whitely’s captaincy, the way he relates to his players,on and off the field is very refreshing.
I think Meyer should use this tour to fast track his captaincy for the looming World Cup.

  • Most deserved is Jaco Kriel!!!

He leads so many currie cup stats:
    - most tries of all players
    - most defenders beaten of all players
    - most clean breaks of all players
    - 2nd most turnovers won
    - only missed 7 out of 129 tackle attempts (95%)
    - ranked 5th in carries
    - ranked 13th in offloads
    - 11th in loose ball collected

I have never seen 1 player dominate a tournament as Kriel did!!!!

  • @Chippa (Comment 19) : ok let’s start at prop: 4 loose head props and only two tight head props?
At lock he picked 3 no.4 locks and only 1 no.5 why not pick Lewies?
Picking Steyn at flyhalf really?!?!?! and then picking Goosen as a fulback to make space for his love child?!?!?! I’m sure he did this before with another flyhalf but can’t remember his name think it could be a Pat or something?!?!?!?!
At centre he picked 3 no.12′s and a wing?!?!?! why not pick JDJ?
So ja like I said some interesting picks indeed?!?!

I also would have JDJ in that squad, thats a travesty.

And if Goosen is being groomed as a 15 I would rather have Kolby…..

  • I think Gurthro, Coenie and Steyn lucky to be there but they are multiple caps Boks so guess can see his thinking. I have no problem with Goosen at 15- Willie LeRoux has struggled in his 2nd season and i prefer Goosen at 15 than 10. YEs HM didnt pick many guys out of the CC but lets for a moment put the CC in perspective…there were a large number of Boks missing so yes guys looked good but against 2nd rate guys.

  • @JD (Comment 22) : I am with you on JDJ but when it comes to Lewies being called up we must remember what HM said in his 1st year, he wants his players to have gained as much experience as possible and Lood played well when he played 5 in the Championship so he has to build on that. Calling Lewies now would not make sense as Botha/Lood will be fighting it out for the 5th Lock spot and now to add a seventh name at this stage :?: He wants to add comp to FB with an attacking player who has a big boot and pace,it shows he decided to play Pat at 10 solely. Which exp TH did you have in mind?? Coenie is the only logical option at the moment

  • See a lot of people don’t understand why M Steyn is in the squad. It’s pretty simple really. There is no 10 who can boast anywhere even near half of the experience he has.

Bear in mind that the guys HM is showing a lot of faith in are aged 24 & 20. They still have a huge amount to learn.

But I see what you are trying to say. I disagree about been broken. Not a style I like but no one can question his tactical ability with the boot. An area Meyer wants PL and HP to continue to develop. Whether we like it or not, tactical kicking is a crucial to winning games. Ask the ABs how important it is to them. MS has won games against every team out there in pretty much every pitch and weather condition possible. Leaving that kind of experience out of the squad is not smart when you have two and a half young guns. (I’m guessing Goosen is in for 15 & 10 cover)

  • @Zibbie (Comment 37) : Well yeah, but HM is not playing MS all the time. HP and PL got to play against Oz and NZ in two critical games. Those two are gaining experience and learning from one of the best.

A mistake in one game from MS does not make him a bad player, any more than Boshoff missing a bunch of penalties. Sorry I know that hurts but I don’t and I’m sure you don’t suddenly think Boshoff is rubbish right?

So expect 6 to be cut from here – mostly likely a flyhalf, couple of front-rowers and a couple of locks.

Why on earth does the squad contain 4 flyhalves, the notion that Goosen is now a back-up 15 is laughable.

Bakkies, Matfield, Schalk, Steenkamp, Jean, Morne and Pienaar should not be in the squad, along with a few others

  • Gaffie du Toit reckons Steyn and Goosen have both been used very sparingly by their clubs and therefore don’t merit selection as it sends the wrong message to locally based players. Very fair point but question is who do we take in their place? Marnitz Boshoff and Jesse Kriel perhaps? Some might argue for Kolbe but I seriously doubt Meyer would select a player of his stature.

I have a feeling that if Pollard plays well in those conditions then Morne might be touring for the last time as he knows PL can play in those conditions.
