Pumas loose forward Renaldo Bothma returns to Durban, where it all started for him as a 19-year-old, to play Super Rugby for the Sharks in 2015 and 2016.

25-year-old Bothma joined the Sharks after finishing school in Heidelberg, but left as an under 21 year old to join the Lions before making a senior debut in the black and white. He has since risen to prominence as a Pumas player and has also emerged as a test regular for Namibia.

Bothma will remain contracted to the Pumas until the end of 2016, but will be available to the Sharks for the 2015 and 2016 Super Rugby campaigns. World Cup commitments will see him miss the 2015 Currie Cup entirely, but he will play in Puma grey in the 2016 installment of the domestic showcase.

Renaldo stands roughly 1.9m in his socks and weighs 113kgs. He is comfortable in any back row position, but has come to the fore in recent years as a ball-carrying option at blindside flank or number 8, a position where the Sharks need depth following the departure of Jean Deysel to Japan.

  • Awesome stuff! I suspect he’ll mainly be used as a blindside flank.

  • He is a good player but this deal makes no sense for the Sharks! So we use a guy for Super rugby and dont develop any of our own, then we left to play CC with guys that havnt had any exposure and our Boks are missing. Yeh sorry this is a bad deal.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 11) : SR…we have guys that have played Vodacom Cup for a number of years now and keep them contracted…but only way to see if they can develop is playing them with the big boys. I dont see how using Bothma as a stop gap develops anyone tho?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 19) : If you look at the player the Sharks has at the moment, bar the young Sharks, we have no backup bruiser to Willem, hence why we played a lock at 7 during the CC. We have one or two young guys who can step up in that role, but they need another year or two to develop.

Just thinking of the guys that are around we have Mthembu, Coetzee, Alberts, Kankowski, Majola, Meyer, Kleinhans…im assuming Du Toit,Lewies,Oosthuizen, Wentzel and Astle all playing lock

If Faf came in for the next 2 super rugby seasons and relegated others such as Cameron Wright and Stefan Ungerer to Vodacom Cup would everyone be chilled with that? Just wondering

  • @SheldonK (Comment 30) : Lions has first choice of the Puma players only if they don’t want them then other unions can sign them. Lions is cover with loosies so that’s why Bothma was released. Don’t think that will happen with Faf.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 30) : Difference is there are a maximum of two spots for scrumhalves, ons starting, one benched. The loose trio offers at least double the amount of spots and the opportunity to help out in the lock positions in a bind so ultimately there’s a little less congestion.

And also not saying that Bothma wont add value- he is a quality player so of course he will. My point is that we have only signed him for the next 2 Super rugby competitions so are we saying that none of our juniors will be able to make the step up in the next 2 years? Yes there always injuries etc etc but if we have spent the money on signing him you can guarantee Bothma will play. So where does that put the Dupreez brothers who are SA u20 players? or say Khaya Majola and Francios Kleinhans? I know you say different positions but i dont think so. If we had signed Bothma outright then great but only for Super rugby then he heads back to share Sharks info with the Pumas…

  • @SheldonK (Comment 39) : Due to the World Cup we are going to have to use Alberts very sparingly. Having another bruiser available for next year’s crazy Super season makes a lot of sense.

Our youngsters will get there chances in the Vodacom Cup / Currie Cup. To be honest I have not see any of them that screams Super Rugby material right now.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 40) : Do you think Alberts will make the World Cup? I fear that his body cannot handle constant games anymore based on the way he plays..and I think he may leave after the World Cup anyway. Not giving youngsters a run in Super rugby games it would mean we go into the CC with a very green loose trio. The reason im saying throw the youngsters in is because i do feel the Sharks are carrying some players on their books that arent up to it and should be cut…exposing them and seeing if they can cut it or be cut from the Sharks would then shed that deadweight and allow us to retain quality.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 39) : By logic that we should continue to develop our young players, I think it’s a good thing that we only have Bothma for SR, that gives the other guys another season of CC to prove whether or not they have what it takes. Some of the guys were good during the season (our captain comes to mind), but I don’t think I saw any other the other flanks (barring JB of course) that I would feel comfortable with in a tight game of SR. Most of them are still young, if they are good enough, they will push Bothma for a starting spot anyway ;-)

    @SheldonK (Comment 39) :
I hear you, but I think one needs to balance developing juniors for the future with winning today.

Bothma is probably signed for 2 seasons of SR specifically to cover for possible injuries. CC is the place where we may want to develop the juniors.

The Sharks Boks are around the CC squad even when not playing so they still add [email protected]HeinF (Comment 43) : Having watched this year i would like to see Mthembu and Majola play Super rugby- not every game but need to be rotated in. However i do think we have gusy in the system that i think we feel will come good but i dont think they ever will and only reason to find out is to play them. But having Bothma means they wont be played and found out hence we retain the dead wood until we forced to use them then wonder why they dont perform.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 45) : I do get that Super rugby is for the finished product and CC for revealing youngsters. But then we as supporters need to realise we wont be winnign the CC for a while until our lack of depth is exposed and moved out and new blood brought in. Our u21s were horrible and u19s not much better. We have been pretty average in Vodacom Cup for last few years. But yet we retain these guys and hope by playing CC they will turn it around and become Super rugby players.

Depending whose fit and firing our loose forward/lock combo on the bench could be interesting. I do think that Majola offers a lot coming off the bench in the final quarter. He reminds me a lot of Jaques Botes…altho maybe a better ball carrier
