Jannie ruled out

The Springboks have confirmed that Bok prop Jannie du Plessis will not be considered for Saturday’s test against Italy in Padova.

Doctor du Plessis picked up a hamstring strain against England last weekend, with further concerns relating to a knee injury fortunately proving unwarranted. While he will miss out on the Italy game, nothing has yet been said about his availability for the Welsh game the week after and the fact that he has not been sent home from tour makes it likely he’ll be fit to play in that game, the last test of an arduous international season.

Willie le Roux has been cleared of a cheekbone fracture and will be fit to face Italy, if selected. Meanwhile, Heyneke Meyer is expected to turn to Coenie Oosthuizen and uncapped Julian Redelinghuys as his tighthead options this weekend.

  • Inevitable. Rest the good doctor for the remainder of the tour.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 1) : yeah, I wish they’d just send him home, especially since they now have two other tightheads + Coenie on tour.

Problem is, if they do that, we’re very exposed against Wales.

  • Could be a blessing in disguise, let him rest the poor guy. Hoping Mvovo gets a run on Saturday at 15, but guessing they’ll try Goosen there.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : I like your phrasing: “two other tightheads + Coenie”.

If Meyer hopes to take Jannie to the next World Cup he should send him home. A trial by fire against Wales for our more inexperienced tightheads may not be the worst thing in the world. It may even help convince Meyer that Coenie is not the answer in that position.

  • In the first test I said to my mates that Jannie WILL get an injury before the WC. This is a blessing in disguise. But I’m still not happy that this is the way he has to get rest. He should never have been on this tour at all.
