Bok changes for Azzuri

Trevor Nyakane comes in to start a test match for the first time this weekend, as Bok coach Heyneke Meyer has made four changes to his starting fifteen for Saturday’s clash against Italy.

Beast Mtawarira enjoys a well-earned rest, with Nyakane donning the number 1 jersey ans Gurthro Steenkamp moving onto the bench. On the other side of the scrum, Jannie du Plessis is out injured, meaning a start at tighthead for Coenie Oosthuizen and a welcome bench spot for debutant Julian Redelinghuys. Teboho Mohoje is in for Schalk Burger at blindside flank in the only other change to the pack; another debutant, Nizaam Carr, should cap off a great season with a test debut off the bench.

The final change to the forward bench sees Lood de Jager replace Bakkies Botha.

Meyer has opted for consistency among the backs, with Johan Goosen set to start a test at fullback for the first time in the only change to the unit that played at Twickenham. Willie le Roux, who was in doubt this week due to a suspected cheekbone fracture, will play off the bench, replacing Cornal Hendricks in the number 23 jersey.

Springboks: 15 Johan Goosen, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jan Serfontein, 12 Jean de Villeirs (capt), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Pat Lambie, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Teboho Mohoje, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Trevor Nyakane.
Replacements: 16 Bismarck du Plessis, 17 Gurthro Steenkamp, 18 Julian Redelinghuys, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Nizaam Carr, 21 Francois Hougaard, 22 Handre Pollard, 23 Willie le Roux

  • How many years have I been calling for Goosen at 15? I really do expect him to put in a good show – although he may show some tactical naivety this early.

  • Hmmm. If I remember correctly the Italians are pretty damn good scrummagers? should be an interesting battle up front. I hope the weather is nice so that we can see some running from our backline.

  • Scrum will be in turbo-reverse with Coenie at 3. This will give us a good opportunity to see how Reinach does under pressure at this level.

I hope we are able to replace Vermeulen early in this game – he has been taking up a huge work load.

  • @Morné (Comment 2) : Morne, why persist with the Coenie experiment at 3 when he’s done well at 1. Any insight?

And I know I’m pushing my luck here but should Guthro really even be in consideration in regards to his current form?

Just keep in mind, as far as tightheads go Coenie is about 4th in line – our first 3 are all out injured.

  • HM has Coenie in his sights so guess will have to make peace with that. But why Guthro? I mean thats a serious place filler! Glad to see Goosen at 15, interested to see what he can offer there. Jus not sure why Carr over Whiteley? And then if Kriel and Senatla dont get game time its a serious missed opportunity. I get HM wants some continuity should things go badly but if our squad depth cant beat Italy then our rugby is in worse shape than we think

  • @SheldonK (Comment 21) : Regarding Carr, I suspect Whitely is a known quantity to Meyer while he still needs to see what Carr offers in a Bok jersey. Agree, it would have been great to see Kriel and Senatla in action as well but at some point you probably risk major disruption in a team and open them up to the possibility of a first loss against Italy. Shouldn’t happen against Italy no matter who we field but these upsets do occur and you don’t want to be the coach that lost to Italy a year before a World Cup

  • No chance for Habana to rest by putting Mvovo in? I would have put Whitely in as an impact player & started with Lood. Why Hougaard on bench? Jano not in favour?Go figure. I thought we needed to rest players like Matfield,Jannie,Jean,Beast & Duane! :?:

  • @vanmartin (Comment 22) : @Bokhoring (Comment 23) : No def fair points and Italy definitely wont be a walk in the park, im not expecting more than a 10 point diff if that. The thing is that with only Wales plus next Years short Rugby Championship left when does HM get a chance to have a look at the other guys? or does he just keep them in the squad and hope that if they needed at RWC they will deliver? I get that mass changes wud cause disruption but rather now against Italy and Wales next week than against Arg just before RWC and we lose that game and then panic

  • @SheldonK (Comment 26) : Valid concern and we should be planning for at least one or two injuries to key players but Meyer is a coach that tends to err on the side of caution. Not a terrible quality for a Bok coach to have but it does mean he won’t experiment as much as we’d like him too.

I think Mvovo’s exclusion is case in point. I actually forgot he was part of the touring group

  • Personally feel that HM has got the right amount of changes to test the newbies. Too many changes has a detrimental effect as there won’t be enough established players to keep the ship running in the right direction. the new guys need to also feel they are playing in a proper Bok team along side players like The Bizness, Habs, victor, duane etc. The good thing with the right amount of changes is that they’ll be fired up to perform but at the same time play within the structures set out by HM and co.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 39) : I agree with you that wholesale changes doesnt really benefit anyone as the coach then cant see how the newbies combine with the established guys. Will be interesting to see how many changes he makes next week against Wales. As much as wholesale changes dont benefit, i also cant see much benefit from taking guys on tour and not playing them at all

  • @SheldonK (Comment 40) : Yeah i also think too many players taken on tour. perhaps it was double insurance knowing that a number of players would not be able to complete the tour. Still seems a bit too much.

Nevertheless quite excited to see how the new guys perform. esp Julien, Nizaam and Goosen (who i’ll consider new as he’s in as a FB). Really hope they put their hands up. Also freaking great to see Cobus and Pat starting again.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 41) : Yeh perhaps too big a squad altho i hav heard rumours that the reason for the big squad is so that the practises over there could be 15 vs 15 even if a couple injuries. Im very interested to see how Goosen goes as i feel he could give a very good option at 15. Would be also interested to see how Carr and Julien go as them doing well or badly will then allow us to gauge how strong or weak the CC etc actually is as those 2 in particular were top of the crop

  • @gregkaos (Comment 41) : You’re absolutely right, with all the other distractions we haven’t really celebrated the fact that both Pat and Cobus get their second start in two weeks. I’m hoping that a start against Italy allows them a little more freedom and confidence to run the show with a little flair (for lack of a better term).
