History: Springboks vs Italy

After a 31 – 28 win against England last week, the Springboks will face Italy at the Stadio Euganeo in Padua on Saturday afternoon.

The match on Saturday will only be the twelfth time these two countries meet since the first test was played in 1995.

It’s interesting to see the Springboks’ biggest win over Italy was under Nick Mallet in 1999, when they beat the Azzurri 101 – 0, – also Italy’s biggest defeat – at Kings Park in Durban. Italy’s smallest defeat, 13 – 29 was also under Mallet, but this time he wore the Azzurri (Sky-Blues) colours of Italy.

Former Sharks player, Stefan Terblanche made his debut in that same match in Durban and went on to score 5 tries, not a bad way to start your test career!

The 2nd placed Springboks have a 100% win record against the 14th placed Italy, the only other teams with 100% win records are Australia, England, New Zealand and the Pacific Islanders.

The Springboks have won 4 from 4 tests in Italy, scoring 188 points and only conceding 88. In South Africa they have won 7 from 7, scoring 389 and only conceding 51.

The teams for Saturday’s test:

  • Italy, not unlike Argentina and Samoa, will try to drag you down to their level and really spoil what could have been a semi-enjoyable game of flowing rugby.

Never enjoy these games…teams like this should earn the right to play the top 5 nations, and not just be handed this opportunity as if it is their right.

    No. 14 vs. No. 2 – yawn

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 1) : I enjoy supporting Italy, or maybe it’s just that thing inside wanting the underdog to do well haha

  • You sure about that Terblanche stat?
Could have sworn his debut was four tries against Ireland…

  • @Shakes34 (Comment 4) : yeah actually you’re right. Terblanche scored 4 against Ireland on debut in 98. He scored 5 against Italy in 99 in his 14th test.

    I’ll amend.

  • Looking at Stefan’s stats, he really was a bit of a flat track bully. 19 test tries in total, but only one of those was against a fellow top 5 side.

The rest were all against Italy, Ireland, Wales and Scotland

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 1) : what a snob! As an Italian u have probably just convinced me to become an AB supporter in SA! but its probably what the Kiwi and Ozzie team supporters say about SAn teams and why they have relocated us to play against Japan and Argentina!

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 7) : Oh I’m sorry….I forgot to make allowances for your ancestry. ;-)

I’m sure folks with Polish ancestry also feel that their rugby team deserves a shot against the no.2 team in the world.

Let’s just sacrifice a whole year of competitive rugby for the sake of those poor soles who’s country of origin is not within the top 10 rugby playing nations.
