Jean’s World Cup bogey appears to strike again

“The scans revealed significant ligament damage to the inside of his knee and the supporting muscles,” said Bok team doctor Craig Roberts via press release after captain Jean de Villiers was stretchered off during the second half of the team’s horror 6-12 loss against Wales at the weekend.

With the injury initially diagnosed as a dislocation of the knee-cap, there had been some hope (although perhaps only in my mind) that the structure of the knee itself may have been unaffected. Roberts’ early prognosis, though, makes for somber reading. Few will need reminding that de Villiers has suffered several serious knee injuries already and that at the age of 33, could hardly afford another.

His first occurred during his test debut in 2002 as a raw youngster – he had barely recovered from that before doing it again in 2003. That second knock cost him participation in that year’s World Cup and while it was not a knee that scuppered him four years later, he missed pretty much all of the 2007 campaign as well after tearing a bicep in the opening World Cup game.

With such a history – and his age – counting against him, few are now optimistic about de Villiers’ prospects of being fit for the 2015 tournament, especially in light of Roberts’ analysis. “Jean will return to South Africa and see an orthopaedic specialist in Cape Town early in the week. He has had previous surgery on this knee and the further management of the injury is dependent upon the specialist’s recommendations,” he said at the weekend.

With few options available at inside centre – and fewer still as captain – Bok coach Heyneke Meyer must now certainly be pondering the irony of his statement ahead of the Welsh test that de Villiers was the only player in the Bok group to be assured of a World Cup spot.

  • They’ll be kicking themselves about Frans Steyn now.

Watched that cleanout in slow motion. A leg should never bend like that. Horrific to see. Hope he heals well and he heals fast!

  • Tough break for Jean and a nightmare for the Boks. Captaincy would probably go to Matfield should de Villiers not heal up in time but I have a suspicion Vermeulen would make a great captain.

  • That injury looked horrendous… thinking about it still makes me cringe

I’m surprised his leg was still attached after the way it twisted

  • Gutted for him.

I wouldnt be holding my breath that he’ll be available for the WC, if ever.
I injured my leg like that and I never played again. And mine wasnt half as bad as that.

Obviously the man is supremely more athletically and genetically gifted than i am, is battle-hardened and fit, along with having access to the best medical care money can buy.

I just dont see him coming back from this I’m afraid. Its a horrible injury.

Wish Jean all the best with rehab. Just really gutted for him.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) :

It does seem as if he is unlucky with world cups.

But then you just look at the workload he’s had since the last world cup and it was largely inevitable that he’d get injured again at some point.

I reckon he thought it’d be JdV/JF for every game.

  • ““You can’t wipe out what’s gone before … the records and results of the last three years will always be there, but the only thing that matters is, will we win the World Cup?” said Matfield. “That’s going to decide the whole four years of Heyneke Meyer’s reign. Everything’s about the World Cup now.””

Didnt take as long as I expected for that ole Strauelism to be rolled out. Does that mean that Meyer will quit if he he doesnt win the WC?

  • @Big Fish (Comment 22) : That mentality should have been stamped out after the first game the Boks lost post WC 2007.

HM claimed that every game was important, and his aim was not only to win the WC, but to get the Boks to no.1 and keep them there.

Strange how the AB’s are able to stay at number 1, and then go on to win the occasional WC….we’re barely holding on to no. 2, and we’re barely able to win the WC.

Matfield is just another HM fan-boy willing to say and do anything in order for him to be dragged through to yet another WC.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 22) : Everyone strives to win the World Cup… the Irish believe they can do it, the Welsh certainly believe they can do it… but the reality is that only one team can win it.

And more than that… only one team are really clear favourites! The rest of us will try our best and hope for a bad day for the AB’s.

So to define one’s whole career on the hope of winning a WC is frankly quite silly. And the fixation the public have with doing the same is also quite silly…

I would far rather we strive to play an attractive brand of rugby, and maybe lose a few games along the way… than play the crap we did on tour… and loose half our games anyway
