Botha adds to Sharks muscle

England international second-row forward Mouritz Botha has signed a 2-year deal with the Sharks.

Botha, a specialist 4-lock, was born in Vryheid in Northern Natal almost 33 years ago and has walked a hard road indeed to rugby stardom. From the obscurity of lower league club rugby in Cape Town, Botha made his name playing for unfashionable Bedford in the UK, from where he was snapped up by Saracens. 110 caps for the north London club followed, along with 10 international appearances in English colours.

John Smit said today, via press release: “Mouritz is a great acquisition for the Cell C Sharks and his experience gained at international level will be hugely beneficial to our squad. He will add significant value and depth to our tight five.

“We look forward to welcoming him to Durban.”

Welcome home, Mo! Great to have you!

  • The turnover of locks at the Sharks is frightening.

So Rob, do you think PSdT will convert to a 5 lock next year?

  • @Pokkel (Comment 12) : hard to really say.

without this signing, I’d have said we had no real option but to play PS at 4…. now we have good options.

My preference is still for PS at 4 and Lewies at 5.

  • I like this signing and the fact that we are moving towards (provided nobody leaves) having two decent players in each position.

Although I’m stoked about the Bothma signing as well, I’m still so bleak about Deysel leaving. He is a seriously underrated rugby player.

  • @MerckZ (Comment 40) : Deysel was great, that is pre-injury ,after his stint in vodacom cup after, he was never the same, recent games even those Bullarinas put him on his bum,as for MB ,I would rather have a 26 year old MB than 33 year old,his best is way behind him,why can’t Sharks sign some hot shit 22 year old. Out of London?,my view why waist the time or money give EO and SL backed by PSDT and Astie as backup.
