Black Monday?

Well, this isn’t really meant to be any sort of reference to load-shedding, but perhaps it’s apt all the same…

No, rather, I’ve opted to dub today “Black Monday” due to the fact that for Sharks supporters it really is a very dark day, given the absolute dearth of news (to go with the power). Those who’ve been reading this site since it started almost six years ago will know that I hate letting a day go by without some snippet of information, whether meaningful or not. Today, I got nothing for ya!

Let’s rather take the opportunity to chew the fat a little. Here’s my challenge to you all.

Name two alternate Sharks starting 15s for Super Rugby, using the players we have available. The proviso is this – one of the teams MUST be strong enough to push the Crusaders in Christchurch. The other must be strong enough to start as favourites against the Bulls at Kings Park.

Have fun and off we go!

How many players are returning from japan?
I don’t want to go make a monkey of myself and pick players who won’t return again?

Would think Cronje had done enough to get a look in somewhere, after a disappointing season from Fred.

  • I think the Boks and our regulars will always be there. I am however interested to see if the coaches etc will give much Super rugby game time to Ndungane, Williams, Van Tonder, Swiel, Wright, Fisher, Hay, Kleinhans, Majola, Cronje. Of course inuries play their part but i just wonder if those guys are part of Plan A rotation

  • unlike most I feel too many changes do more harm than good for the “team”

I think the strongest possible team should play where possible, with maybe 1 or 2 per match, all it takes is a loss to sow doubt within the team.

I also feel the likes of Mvovo or Steyn to possibly play 15 as SP is far to erratic, or play Fisher at 15 where he did show promise when tested.

So my main 15 would be

    15 Steyn
    14 JpP
    13 Jordaan
    12 Esterhuizen
    11 Mvovo
    10 Lambie
    09 Reinach
    08 Kanko
    07 Alberts
    06 Marcel
    05 PSDT
    04 Lewies/Botha
    03 Jannie
    02 Bismark
    01 Beast/Du Toit

    16 Cooper
    17 Du Toit/Beast
    18 Adriaanse
    19 Botha/Lewies
    20 Bothma
    21 Ungerer
    22 Fisher
    23 Sbura

    Backup
    SP
    Odwa
    Chavangha
    Stevens
    Cronje
    Wright
    Zeilinga
    Wentzel
    Heimer
    Van Tonder
    Khaya
    Chadwick
    Monde
    Mienie
    Wiehan Hay
    Du Preez 1
    Du Preez 2
    Oosthuizen
    Swiel
    Waylon
    Hoffman

That’s 21 extras of which all or most can be used for rotation, but whole sale changes are never a good thing, Also I know there are a few names I am not thinking of, like the blonde lock from Border who’s name I just cant think of.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 51) : you’re in for a LOOOOOONG season bud :)

Rotation is the mantra to which both GG and BV adhere.

  • lol Hi Rob, Nope I take it as it comes they can rotate as they wish, I just know that for the most it back fires, I will happily be wrong  I was in a long season this past season when they rotated and watched things fall apart.

but like I said, few changes would prolly be ok, its like changing the whole every week which would be killing.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 51) :

I only picked to completely different teams since I thought it was the point of the article. I don’t think I’d ever have more than, let’s say 5 alternate players to my first choice. So I would certainly rotate, but always try to keep the core of the first choice together.

  • Great Black Monday article Rob.

    My favourite topic locks :

    Our long term Future :

    1. Stephan Lewies
    2. PSDT
    3. Etienne

Nor Etienne or PSDT are born and bred flanks but they can help out.

Support/Alternate players if we have injuries or Springboks :

    1. Botha
    2. Planet

Not convinced about JC – he needs balls, maybe a few years in France will harden him up ?

5 Quality locks enough for a long season ?

  • @Observer (Comment 67) : well, if previous seasons are anything to go by, even 10 wouldn’t be enough.

Let’s hope we have better luck with injuries. It’s always our locks that are hardest hit.

Unless Brendan and co can lift Jannie and Beast’s game – they havnt even scrummed well if we are perfectly honest with ourselves – I see no reason why we shouldn’t try out the youngsters
