Few nominations for unloved Sharks

The fall-out of the Jake White era continues, with the Sharks hardly featuring in SARU’s list of annual nominations this year.

Despite winning the South African conference by a considerable margin and being the only local team to qualify for the Super Rugby play-offs, the Sharks Super Rugby team does not even feature among the “Team of the Year” nominations, while the exploits of the likes of Cheslin Kolbe and Seabelo Senatla in a watered-down Currie Cup were deemed more worthy of reward than, say, Thomas du Toit’s Super Rugby performances as a 19-year old.

In fact, there are only three nominations in total for the Sharks, with du Toit’s inclusion in the “Under 20 Player of the Year” category (which Handre Pollard will win) scant consolation for being omitted from the “Young Player of the Year” category. Marcell Coetzee bags the other two nominations, as he’s been quite rightly mooted as both Super Rugby Player of the Year and overall Player of the Year. Amazingly, two players from teams who didn’t even sniff a knock-out place have been nominated alongside Coetzee in the latter category, while Frans Steyn – who won several matches for the Sharks virtually on his own – doesn’t get a look in at all.

And while White may not be popular, well, anywhere, I’d think that coaching a team to the Super Rugby semi-finals must surely be more of an achievement than anything Alister Coetzee or Johan Ackermann have managed this year.

The Sharks, though, seem to have once again lost the ever-important SARU popularity contest this year. Let’s hope that in 2015, with a “face” at the helm that is more amenable to the national body, our players might get the praise they deserve.

SARU Rugby Player of the Year:

1. Nizaam Carr
2. Marcell Coetzee
3. Willie le Roux
4. Handré Pollard
5. Duane Vermeulen

Absa Young Player of the Year:

1. Nizaam Carr
2. Cheslin Kolbe
3. Handré Pollard
4. Seabelo Senatla

1. Springboks
2. Junior Springboks
3. Springbok Sevens
4. Xerox Golden Lions (Absa Currie Cup)
5. DHL Western Province (Absa Currie Cup)

Absa Coach of the Year:

1. Johann Ackermann (Xerox Golden Lions)
2. Allister Coetzee (DHL Western Province)
3. Neil Powell (Springbok Sevens)

SA Under-20 Player of the Year:

1. Thomas du Toit
2. Jesse Kriel
3. Handré Pollard

SA Sevens Player of the Year:

1. Branco du Preez
2. Frankie Horne
3. Seabelo Senatla

Vodacom Super Rugby Player of Year:

1. Marcell Coetzee (Cell C Sharks)
2. Duane Vermeulen (DHL Stormers)
3. Warren Whiteley (Lions)

Vodacom Cup Player of the Year:

1. Renaldo Bothma (Steval Pumas)
2. Jonathan Francke (GWK Griquas)
3. Lizo Gqoboka (EP Kings)

Absa Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year:

1. Nizaam Carr (DHL Western Province)
2. Juan de Jongh (DHL Western Province)
3. Jaco Kriel (Xerox Golden Lions)

  • Tiny consolation is that Renaldo Bothma has been nominated in the Vodacom Cup Player of the Year category and he is kinda, sorta a Shark now #iknowitsastretch

EDIT: And to be completely honest, I’m pretty happy not to see White’s name in the coach category. His mistreatment of players may be purely hearsay but it came from all quarters of the Sharks and the idea of honouring someone like that just does not sit well with me at all (in spite of his successes).

  • Saru obviously expects far more from the Sharks than merely reaching the play-offs….

So let’s take it as a compliment ;-)

  • Hmm i suppose as Sharks supporter we can feel a bit aggrieved but looking at the nominations i dont have too many issues to be honest. I dont think Carr for SA Player of the year but other 4 nominations spot on. Whats the qualification for Young Player, under 25? Yes the Sharks should replace the Lions in Team of the Year. Id replace Alistaor Coetzee with Dawie Theron in Coach of the Year. Frans Steyn kicked decently for the Sharks in Super rugby but other than that was ave…go back and read our readers comments after super rugby games. So in all fairness the awards accurate for the most part

  • I have no complaints about the nominations. All fair I reckon. The Sharks might have won the conference trophy but they played some pretty boring rugby to get there and didn’t even challenge in the play-offs. The highlight of the Sharks year was the win in Christchurch but the rest of the year has been pretty forgetful.

  • I hope Allister gets the nod – that would probably keep him at the Stormers for another 10 years at least which in turn will rile the living daylights out of most of my weepeee acquintances.

On a serious note White should have got a nomination as should the Sharks Super rugby team. To honestly have Currie Cup teams and coaches in this seriously watered down competion, (this year) nominated is a joke.

  • Personally, I’d be hard pressed to find a Sharks player (excluding Marcel Coetzee) who consistently impressed me over the course of an entire Super Rugby/Currie Cup campaign. On those grounds, I can’t really complain about the nominations

  • @SheldonK (Comment 10) : Rob has a point, without FS we prob would have never made it to the semi’s in the first place. He got allot of banter, but he had to play a game plan to JW standards, especially considering that the Sharks stocks were depleted at flyhalf. FS had not lpayed there for a very long time, he did a excellent job there. You have to give credit when its due.

@VinChainSaw (Comment 14) : FS had to stand his ground considering all the other players who left to earn what he had been losing out on. He spesifically left France to play for SA again due to the non selection of overseas players. The double standards from SARU and HM is what blew the lid off the pot.
But I get what you are saying, highly unlikely that SARU would select someone they had a fallout with.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 15) : I think Frans Steyn was good for the Sharks and I am a fan of his. I just think he did a decent job out of position at flyhalf and yes he kicked pretty well. But general play and tackling was pretty ave which is why i dont think he should be nominated. As for his issues with SARU- i fully back him on that. SARu want players to honour their contracts etc but then they dont do the same. I also feel ABSA Young Player should be restricted to u21s and below

    What are the criteria?

I just think its disingenious of you to hold up FS and JW as examples of people who have been hard done by when neither are even on speaking terms with anybody at SARU. And both are, rightly or wrongly, known as petulant little sh*ts.

    Its called realpolitik.

That’s not even going into the relative merit on their claim or into the fact that neither are really standout role models.

This is tabloid stuff Rob – I’ve come to expect better from you over the years… ;-)

In a similar vein no self-respecting rugby fan could justify a Side of the Year nomination for a side that came fourth in a competition and got eliminated with a hiding.

Sharks wasn’t afraid of again overhauling the entire coaching team until the correct balance and culture is created….Lions continually work toward building a family worth sponsoring.

Whereas the bulls, tsietas and to a lessor extent, stormers seem to be more than willing to give last year’s formula “just one more shot”….they’ll again emulate the same results (or even worse, as most other teams continually adapt their approach to become more competitive)

  • I doubt Ackerman would jump ship now. they can afford his salary and he is in the unique position to produce a real competitive team for SR 2015. Something no other lions coach has been able to do in a few years, that alone will stand out like red ink on his CV.

  • FS should get more than just a mention. Any coach chasing win stats would have loved to have him on the team. Playing against the worlds best and even when your team is depleted or tired STILL maintaining a better win record than HM and his whole bok team for the year! Frans can keep a guy like Hm in a job all by himself, good tactic from HM to make SURE he has him on the squad!

  • @Zibbie (Comment 61) : Interesting view, personally I was incredibly impressed with the Lions SuperRugby performance, winning 7 games and being only 2 wins from a playoff spot only a year after having to sit out the comp and lose a lot of players. Made me wonder how the Lions would have done in 2014 if Ackers had a season of SR (2013) under his belt. I would not be surprised to see the Lions pushing hard for a 2015 SR playoff spot.
