Taking a break (to be jolly)

The first stage of pre-season comes to an end today, with the Sharks Super Rugby squad set to get their Christmas break underway after today’s sessions.

I think it’s a fitting time for me to do the same here at Sharksworld. While it’s always my goal to bring as much news as I can, we need to be honest in admitting that there’s really nothing of interest happening at the moment – well, nothing that I’m able to report. If I were stationed on a deck chair (under an umbrella!) on the Kings Park outfields I’m sure there would be plenty to write about, but such is life…

I’m going to take a bit of a “tactical regroup” myself until the New Year. To all of those celebrating, I wish you a wonderful, joyous, peace-filled Christmas, with every blessing that the Christ child and his loving Father brings to each one of us. Thanks for another wonderful year here on Sharksworld and we look forward to an even better 2015.

Black and white (and red and green!) forever!

  • Have a good one Rob. To all the other supporters, have a well deserved break, a joyous Christmas and New year and stay safe.

@Phil46 (Comment 16) : Same jersey for SR 2015 but there might be a 125 year commemorative jersey before the CC starts.

BLK is also working on a range of polos, tees, training vests, etc for next year

  • Cape Town – New Zealand-born wing Jack Wilson has joined the Sharks from English club Saracens ahead of next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Saracens announced via their official website that Wilson will join the Sharks with immediate effect.

The 25-year-old arrived in London in December 2012 and has scored six tries in 19 appearances for Saracens.

Mark McCall, Saracens’ Director of Rugby, commented: “Jack has made an excellent impression, but he would like to return to the southern hemisphere and seize this opportunity in South Africa. Our policy is always to align the interests of the club with the interests of the player, and we will not stand in his way.”

Wilson will join up with Saracens team-mate Mouritz Botha at the Sharks. South African-born Botha was signed by the Durban-based franchise earlier this month.

  • I see he’s a big lad. 187cm and 103kg’s. Interesting signing, I wonder what the motivation behind this signing is? We could probably have done with another lock/loose forward or fullback.

  • Hi guys…I’m back after some time in the bush with 100 teenagers!
In a thread a while ago there was some discussion about our outside backs. My views latch onto a few things that were said there:
    - if the first choice wings at the moment are Mvovo and Pietersen we don’t have too much concern there…
    - we also have a few other options there, though I do have to say, our depth at wing does strike me as a little thin if one or two long-term injuries strike!
    - I am backing SP to have a much better season this year…but fullback is a concern. If it is proving difficult to sign a quality fullback, I am happy for us to use Mvovo as our second fullback in the squad (second, as in purely the number – two fullbacks…as opposed to second in line behind SP…Mvovo may well develop into the first choice fullback!) and for us to sign another winger.
So all in all, I am quite happy to hear about this signing!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 27) : He used to be a loose forward…(played for Counties, and was converted to a wing – opposite to what we do in SA with big players…Pierre Spies, Daniel Adonga, André Esterhuizen  )

  • @Big Fish (Comment 24) : This should ensure that Sithole specialises as outside centre, without the need to shift him to wing every so often.
