Sharks add a Kiwi winger

Saracens have announced that Kiwi-born winger Jack Wilson, a national Sevens representative back in new Zealand, will leave the club with immediate effect to join the Sharks.

Wilson, who turned 25 earlier this month, weighs 103kg and stands 1.89m tall. He has scored six tries in 19 appearances for the North London club since arriving from New Zealand in 2012, but has battled a little for game time, due to being stuck behind a pair of England wingers in the pecking order.

Speaking of the move, Saracens Director of Rugby Mark McCall said “Jack has made an excellent impression, but he would like to return to the southern hemisphere and seize this opportunity.

“Our policy is always to align the interests of the club with the interests of the player, and we will not stand in his way.”

Welcome to the Sharks, Jack!

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 1) : I’m pretty glad we’ve got an extra winger in the cupboard. Odwa and Tondie are getting on, while JP hasn’t really pitched in a Sharks jersey in about 3 years now. Outside of Lwazi, we’re pretty thin at wing.

  • @Saffex (Comment 6) : This is Professional Club Rugby, and just like any other sport in the world the best clubs need to have the best players whether they be local or foreign, I couldn’t give a shit if the whole Sharks team was not South African as long as they are the best.

If young South African players want to go play over seas so be it, we can just replace them with better foreign players.

Sharks is the every-man’s team, contracting players from all over SA, and importing some international players too….embrace that part of the Sharks culture.

For the non-Durbanites, I guess your local team may not play the type of rugby you enjoy watching, or just may not be worthy of your support.

I don’t support them because they are a South African team, I support them because they are my local team, I don’t care if the players playing for them are local, South African, or foreign, as long as they are the best.

  • @Haddock (Comment 12) : Where are these junior Sharks that are ready to play SR tomorrow? SR is not a learning ground for youngsters that are not naturally gifted. Guys like Lambie and PSDT are an exception and don’t come by everyday. The likes of Mjekevu would rather play in France. Some of our best young backline players (Kriel twins, Du Preez) play for other unions and they don’t even start there. We have lost many good locks to foreign clubs, what are we meant to do? We will not always be able to replace like with like when looking from within. We have to look at the entire globe when making these decisions.

Clever move getting a guy who will be around for both Super rugby and CC. Sport and rugby included is a global profession…we need to get over the fact that not everyone in the side was born and bred in Durban- most of the academy arent Durban born and bred

But more importantly, show more faith in what they have and invest more in the likes of Tyler Fisher, Heimar Williams, Swiel and Ettienne Oosthuizen for instance……and not end up losing them as they did the Marais brothers

Swiel and Fisher just needs a bit of time to settle in senior rugby and by signing the Kiwi they should get that time. As for Botha and Matt Sharks needs cover at lock and prop.

  • With the Varsity Cup taking off as it has Unions are looking at signing players from that comp more than they look at Academies and Club players. The lack of a Varsity Cup side has meant that many players opt out of staying or coming to Durbs unless they have a junior sharks contract. There are more fee paying students at the academy than there are guys recruited by the Union. The above situation has led to our u19s and u21s being pretty poor these last couple years so the Union has had to look elsewhere in order to shore up its depth. Big name players want big money and wont want to play second fiddle to already established Boks we have so signings are tricky.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 72) : thanx you’re 100% correct but it seems as if some people think there’s a line of top international players outside JS’s office just waiting for him to call them in for a Sharks contract.

  • @JD (Comment 74) : He already has a fairly long list of top international players that he already has on his books that he has to pay…after RWC 2015 that may change so lets see then whether the Union looks internally for solutions or looks abroad. If this years juniors are to go by I know which solution Smitty will be leaning towards

  • @JD (Comment 71) : Contracts do not need to be at an end in order for players to be approached. If the Sharks showed interest in Pat Howard for instance and WP were happy to release him, chances are they could secure him.

Offer a player the same money but more game time and they would leave.

Matt Stevens has been a pathetic acquisition by the Sharks…..he was a liability 3 years ago. If you want cover at prop, go do a proper search……..Maks v/Dyk, Rossouw de Klerk, Morne Mellett, Ollie Kebble……etc

With regards to Botha and the NZ wing let’s see how they do before we tell the world how crap they are.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 75) : ja after 2015 World cup a lot of the current “older” players may leave to play in Europe and that will allow more money to buy talented youngsters.

  • I saw André Esterhuizen the other day, here in George. He is a seriously big unit! And looking fit. I wonder if he will get game time this SR?

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 64) : And then you spend years and lots of resource on developing them in your training programs just to have them leave you for more money and some other club benefits from your hard work. I say spend less effort on the shark academy, do spend time in lifting the standards of local club and university level games and coaches in KZN. You will not reap as much reward as you think with shark academy, everyone is a mercenary nowadays even young boys. Time to accept it.

  • Esterhuyzen plays FB as well doesn’t he? Imagine

    Mvovo wing/fb
    JP wing/ctr
    Esterhuyzen FB/ctr
    Steyn ctr/fh/FB
    Sithole ctr/wing
    Lambie FH/FB/ctr

I think this would be my A-String backliners. If wilson is on form he will bring the option to move these guys to their “B” position now and then. I do wish we had a Willie le Roux class fullback in the mix.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 82) : we do watch SP under Gold & co. White put him down just like he did with André and how well did André perform once White left. I just hqve a feeling the same will happen with SP if Gold & co show some faith in him.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 81) : I would not go as far as saying everyone is a mercenary but yes for sure some players qualify to be called mercenaries.
All I expect of a player (and everyone else) is to honour your contract and if you signed for the Sharks (or any other team) is to fulfill it!!!!
When your contact is done and you can play for more money at another union or team go for it and all my best wishes, after all if I can go and do the same job for more money why would I stay with my current employer?

  • @JD (Comment 83) : Let’s hop you are right. When SP just started playing for the sharks I though he had a lot of potential. I also wouldn’t mind seeing what Esterhuyzen can do at FB although I haven’t seen what his kicking skills are like have you?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 85) : I’ve seen very little of André but what I’ve seen of him was impressive and I believe that he’s the future for the Sharks at 12 (with Heimar) so I would not like to move him to 15. If Sharks needs cover at 15 Mvovo looked good there but as a wild card I’d love to see JPP at 15 he’s big, strong and fast as well as he’s good under a high ball and his kicking is not bad.

Surprised that no one has made mention of young Goosen injuring his knee walking off the bus?

My heart went out to friend King Cheetah at that moment. Our thoughts are with Johan at this testing time.
