Perez back with Sharks

We’ve had confirmation from the Sharks that Samoan utility back Paul Perez will rejoin the squad today, on a trial basis for the next three months.

Perez, who parted way with the EP Kings under somewhat mysterious circumstances towards the end of last year spent a bit of time with the Sharks in November, before (we believe) leaving the country due to work permit issues. These have presumably now been resolved and the former Sevens star will use the next few months to prove that he is worthy of a longer-term deal at the Shark Tank.

Meanwhile, a 26-man tour squad for the Toulon game that surfaced on Twitter over the weekend may not completely correspond to the group that the Sharks end up sending over for the clash on 5 February. The final group will be confirmed by the Sharks tomorrow and we’ll obviously provide full coverage at that stage. It’s unlikely to differ significantly from the group leaked yesterday, though and our understanding is that Jannie du Plessis, in particular, won’t be part of the tour due to an injury niggle.

A Sharks squad of 35 for Super Rugby 2015 will be announced on Friday.

Bad news follows this guy wherever he goes. I get that any person makes mistakes, but the list for this guy goes on and on, and more importantly, seems to repeat itself.

    Deported from NZ
Failing to pitch up at French clubs no less than 3 times due to ‘visa’ issues
Going AWOL at the Kings after he spent a season going through rehab on his knee on their account…

Just doesn’t look good to me and I am one of those that believe history always repeats itself.

It is not like you are desperate for cover there in any event. Strange move this. Perhaps John should chat to Cheeky on how he feels about him…

If Brendan didn’t feel he could work with the guy, there’s no way he would be there. And I trust Brendan

  • i think the Sharks are taking a gamble here and seeing if it pays off. They havnt invested much by not offering a contract. He appears to be a difficult and undisciplined player but he is very hard to bring down on attack so lots of potential if they can get him in line. Dont be surprised to see him fill in at 13

  • @JD (Comment 19) : The Sharks are investing little in this guy, either financially or in confidence in him. He is there on a trial basis. Epi was a “guaranteed starter” and almost a saviour the Sharks were counting on and invested a great deal in. Epi hurt us, we don’t have enough invested in this guy for him to hurt us.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : I would argue that even with the high risk nature of Perez, since it is only a trial period, the risk is worth accepting. There is little investment in the player, so even if he is a no show, the Sharks have lost very little. Simple risk management, the cost is so low the risk, while being high is worth accepting. He may end up helping us, and who knows how he will react to being on a winning team, he may turn to be the most loyal.

  • More options and more competition for places is never a bad thing. If youngsters “put up their hands”, then the likes of Perez will make way with no great cost to the Sharks. If he feels like he has something to prove and gives it his all, so much the better.

Does anyone know if Jack Wilson has played or has the skill-set to play Fullback? Oh, and Rob, any news on Claasens?

  • If he proves himself a liability, then he proves himself a liability, but like Rob says; Brendan is a good judge of character and if he feels he can work with this guy, then he could be a good purchase. I have no problem with this, as soon as his bad behavior rears his head his contract is torn up and his career is over…
