The DHL Stormers will look to build on their 35-3 victory over the SWD Eagles in George last week when they face a sterner test in a visiting Cheetahs squad.

According to reports the Stormers were slow out of the blocks and only really found their groove in the second half, while the opposite is true for the men from Bloem who were beaten by a late Bulls surge after leading for most of their fixture.

Allister Coetzee was pleased with the hit out and enjoyed the fact that he was able to give 27 players some valuable game time, he was particularly pleased by his teams efforts at scrum time, an aspect of their game that the coaching team placed a huge emphasis on. The Eagles traditionally have a big pack and are able to bruise many egos when they hit their straps.

In other news Eben Etzebeth looks to be unleashed on Friday evening after sitting out of Saturdays game in George, Etzebeth missed most of his teams 2014 season after sustaining an ankle injury during a warmup game against Boland last year, the coaching staff will be holding thumbs that he doesn’t suffer a repeat of that incident especially since both Jean Kleyn and Ruan Botha are still a few weeks shy of full recovery from their own injuries.

Among the backs it appears that the Cape franchise have stayed true to form and have lured back a player who they deemed surplus at age group level, Matt Turner has been called on to fill the void left by Seabelo Senatla who will be on 7′s duty until May.  Turner is no slouch with ball in hand and has represented England on the 7′s circuit,  Turner only weighs in at 82KG’s and the union are reported to still be trying to secure the services of Samoan Sailosi Tagicakibau who was loaned to them last year, Tagicakibau has a full 25KGs on Turner as well as a 18cm height advantage.

The Stormers face the Cheetahs 7pm at Newlands on Friday evening

  • @SheldonK (Comment 1) : I’m glad he is there but would really be happy if they get the Samoan back in the mix, Taute is extremely injury prone and having turner and kolbe in the back 3 could spell trouble

  • One thing Stormers really need to try sort is that their back three needs to be allot bigger.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 2) : Really? did u rate the Samoan? I thought he was a bit slow and cumbersome and didnt quite fit the mould. Kobus Van Wyk needs to push on and hav a good season. and Pat Howard will be back for you guys too.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : Kobus van Wyk is set for a big campaign, that dude has really won me over. Tagicikibau never did much to excite me but i think he is handy in a comp like Super Rugby

Try fresh bait mate. Would take Senatla and Kolbe over your lot any day of the week, twice on Sundays.

BTW, I never said the boys cant play, what I am saying is they will never win a S15 without big back 3.

I dont think we’ll ever agree that that will make the difference between winning SR and not.

  • Just an observation: I see the Stormers and Bulls are so fixated with size and bulk these days their fans actually think its gonna help their team ‘dominate’. Ag Please. The bulls – well they were always fixated with big men in their forwards, but the Stormers are just a sorry bunch trying to negate the stigma of selecting smaller men. Just look at how they selected their loosies for the CC and possibly SR – no geniune fetcher this time just like the bulls last year who got punished. Don’t get me wrong I’m also keen to see what Kolbe and Van Wyk (who probably conceded the dumbest try scored in last year vs crusaders by failing to pick up a simple bouncing ball) has to offer this year compared to last year SR when they were nothing sort of missing.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 5) : Rate v/Wyk except he is wasted on the wing. Played all his age group rugby at centre……they need to move him to 13
