The Varsity Shield kicks off on Monday, with UKZN Impi coaches Ryan Strudwick, Rudi Urbach and Dylan Campbell having selected a strong squad to take on Peter de Villiers’ UWC in Cape Town.

Here is the squad, with pen pics of the new players courtesy of the kind folks at UKZN. Remember to tune in to SuperSport 1 at 4:30pm on Monday to catch the action.

1) Njabulo Mkize
2) Chris de Beer
3) Sizwe Kubheka
4) David Harel
5) Christie vd Merwe
6) Lwazi Ngcungama
7) Johan du Toit
8) Adam Wessels
9) Graham Koch
10) Inno Radebe
11) Rico Lategan
12) Marra Louw
13) Marcel Coetzee
14) Shayne Makombe
15) Spa Dube
Subs:
16) Ntando Mpofana
17) Mikyle Webster
18) Matthew Mandioma
19) Sanele Malwane
20) Michael Hutton
21) Langa Shange
22) Gavin Nyawata
23) Yandisa Mdolomba

Njabulo Mkize, a former SA Schools and Sharks U21 prop, has transferred his BCom studies from UJ. Njabs will start at loose head, but is equally adept at tight head.
Chris de Beer is a former captain of Hilton College and the Sharks U19s. He transfers his studies from Varsity College and starts at hooker, but is equally proficient in the back row.
Quite incredibly, David Harel will debut for the Impi at lock. David is a real success story of the UKZN rugby programme: The Maritzburg agriculture student did not play rugby at school in Zululand, and only took up the sport when he began his studies.
Christiaan van der Merwe will join ?David in the second row. Christie was recruited to the Sharks from the Boland and has enrolled for a BBA degree.
Johan du Toit will play on the flank. He is the younger brother of Springbok Pieter-Steph, and by all accounts similarly talented. Johan will be studying agriculture and environmental management this year.
Wartburg farmer and BScAgric student Graham Koch returns to the base of the Impi scrum after an absence of almost two years, during which time he has cultivated over 60 varieties of tomatoes, as well as a very impressive moustache.
Innocent Radebe will start at fly half on Monday. Inno was schooled at St Stithian’s in Johannesburg and recruited from the Sharks Academy.
Marius “Marra” Louw hails from Grey College in Bloemfontein and will join Marcel Coetzee (until recently of Maritzburg College) in the Impi midfield, as well as in Business Administration lectures.
?Ntando Mpofana matriculated at Port Shenstone High and played age group rugby for Border before enrolling for Business Administration studies in Maritzburg last year. He will provide front row cover.

Substitute scrumhalf, Langa Shange is a Masters student in Housing at Howard College and is a local lad from Durban.

  • Woohoo! Wartburg is mentioned in a post…and not by me! Graham Koch!! Practically my neighbour. The moustache is impressive…but the beard is gone. You should have seen the beard! When you introduced Graham to people you would introduce Graham…and then you would introduce the beard! Great stuff…

  • So is Strudwick juggling Varsity Cup and Grey Squad? Interesting to see such a close relationship between the Sharks Junior rugby structure and the Varsity Cup. Good…

  • And in other news, another Wartburg product is there too: Marcel Coetzee. You will remember him from the Sharks u19s last year…he scored quite a few tries! He is a centre/wing with a lot of talent and a mean step! Good to see him there…

  • By the way, when Strudwick was captain of Wartburg 1st XV, we had such a good year (beating Kearsney in a warmup game and destroying College 2nds after we weren’t granted a game against their 1sts) that we were rewarded with a tour game against Hoerskool Swartland (of which Johan du Toit is an Old Scholar)…they had 6 Craven week players…and were pretty shocked to lose to little old Wartburg…:) Ah, the good old days!

  • Some exciting youngsters in the UKZN setup. Glad Inny Radebe is gonna get some game time, good chance for Baby Bok selection and the consistent game time will do his prospects the world of good. Keen to see Louw at centre, last time I watched him play, he was still a flanker

  • Guys can somebody tell me why the winner of the FNB Varsity Shield won’t be promoted to Varsity Cup! It’s unfair!

  • @sazito (Comment 12) : @JD (Comment 13) : It is done every year…and the winners of the Varsity Shield are promoted to the Varsity Cup. In 2014, Wits came last in the Varsity Cup and CUT won the Varsity Shield. This year CUT is in the Varsity Cup and Wits has been relegated to the Varsity Shield…

  • I see that on rugby365 most guys are a bit rabid about the rule innovations! I must say, I quite like that they use the Varsity Cup to test out some innovations. It’s the perfect place to be able to put some ideas into practice and see what happens…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 17) : think the rule is also used in primary school rugby and will give the feeding team good attacking ball.

  • Glad to see this level of cooperation between the Sharks and UKZN. It is long overdue in Durban while all the other big unions have strong relationships with their major varsities. The Varsity Cup organisers wanted a competitive side from Sharks country in the competition from the outset but early efforts were undone by petty politics at the varsity. The Impi just need to win promotion this year!
IMO Varsity Cup is far more interesting – bigger crowds and better coverage – than Vodacom Cup for those eligible players (especially now that they’ve tightened up on eligibility).

  • @steve (Comment 23) : I’m glad they tightened up ton thr eligibility of players as it is a Varsity competition and should be played by guys swotting there otherwise it’s almost the same as the club championship.
