Tries galore as Sharks go through the gears

The Cell C Sharks ran amok against two of the province’s top club sides in a pair of practice matches last night, winning both encounters by impressive margins.

Team one beat College Rovers by 55-0, with team two doing nearly as well against Durban Collegians (49-0).

Scoring quite that many tries, while not conceding any, bodes well, even though the opposition was a few levels below what they’ll face in France next week.

We don’t have the team sheets, but do have the try scorers, courtesy of the Sharks’ Twitter feed.

First game: Heimar Williams, Lwazi Mvovo (2), SP Marais, Waylon Murray, Hanco Venter, Franco Marais & Thomas du Toit
Second game: Alcino Isaacs, Jack Wilson, S’bura Sithole (2), Jaco van Tonder and Cobus Reinach (2)

  • Good sign that the backs are scoring tries…means the forwards doing well and creating space

  • I saw Jack Wilson on that team sheet for the Bulls game too. Maybe they cloned him?! What I wouldn’t give to see video of those games, although if they take that Buzz Lightyear energy into the season I will get to see it on HD…starting to get excited

  • Lol, quite a euphemism!! Even though the opposition was “a few levels below??”

Man the gap is a gulf. Toulon would probably carve up both teams by double centuries!!

  • Well I think Wilson was given back temporarily to Sarries so that he can get some warm-up, while at the same time Ndungane/Perez – ok more Perez can show what’s they have to offer.

  • Saracens looking more rusty than the Bulls. Weird. Anyway the Jack Wilson on the team sheet is THE Jack Wilson. He hasn’t got enough of the ball in space but looks reasonably okay

  • Flip the Bulls looked good. Their game plan allows them that consistency. The new players they have brought will make them harder to beat especially at Loftus. Good news for us is that it’s the HM game plan and we all know the limitations it has when confronted by a solid pack. It is going to be difficult for many teams to match that pack though.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 24) : For once BB management is using that thing between their ears. First it was their off season recruits and now it’s their team selection. Jacques du Plessis at 4 and Trevor at 1 bring a lot of credibility to that pack. Lappies looks like he is going to deliver this year, you can see he spend a few minutes in the gym. They have a youngster called Liebenberg, SA u20 8th this year for sure. Spies looks hungry, he put in 2 bigs within 3 minutes of being on the field. Their new wing Jamba is the real deal. BB need to wake up to one more reality, that is their game looks more fluid and quicker with Van Zyl at 9. These guys are going to be harder to beat at Loftus this yr.

    - The Crusaders also lost to the Hurricanes 41-31.

  • @JD (Comment 29) : Also think so but in Brendan and Gary we trust. I am also excited about our recruits this year. Really think that PSDT and Botha are going to complement the riches we have upfront. Oosterhuizen has also managed his way to my good books. Can’t wait to see Bothma play. Really really excited about him. If Deysel or Keegan join us then I will sleep very well at night. Except a very good season from SP as well.

  • Interesting thought on the Bulls game…yes they looked pretty god BUT if Saracens had kicked the bucket load of scrum penalties they had early on they would have built up a sizeable lead…would the Bulls game plan still have worked then chasing the game?? Perhaps something to think about approaching games against them

  • @Shane Hansen (Comment 46) : Hard to say as the Bulsl didnt exactly start with their no.1s either. A full strength Saracens at this stage of the season would probably have beaten the Bulls, if they had taken the points on offer. But in saying that a full strength Saracens at the start of their season vs the Bulls at Loftus would probably lose fairly big too. Tough to compare really other than what was played on Saturday. But some good and bad signs for the Bulls. Glad to see Jaques DuPlessis at lock though
