Toulon vs Sharks

It’s almost time for kick-off Sharks fans! I don’t know about you, but I am extremely excited for this match. It’s only a week until we kick-off our Super Rugby season against the Cheetahs at Growth point Kings Park and it looks like this pre-season match will be exactly what we need to see where we stand.

Yes, Toulon has named a weakened side with 6 players featuring in the 6 Nations this weekend and quality players like Bakkies Botha, Juan Smith, Drew Mitchel, Delon Armitage and Matt Giteau not considered for this match, but such is the depth of this French Top 14 side that the starting Toulon 15 includes 10 international players with 409 caps between them. That’s 135 more international caps than a Sharks side that includes 8 Springboks, 2 English internationals and a Namibian international.

Toulon’s team includes All Black legends like Carl Hayman, Ali Williams and Chris Masoe. Current Argentina internationals Nicolas Sanches, Juan Martin Harnandes, Fernandez Lobbe starts the game while hooker Martias Cortese will come of the bench. English international Steffon Armitage will also provide some experienced cover in an otherwise green looking Toulon bench, which includes Andy Cramond and UJ Seuteni who recently played for Scotland u/20 and Australia u/20 respectively.

This Toulon side also includes 3 South African players, the lesser known Gerhard Vosloo, who started his career with the Lions in 2004. Vosloo moved to Castres Olympique in 2006 when he was 27 and played for them 45 times, he then moved on to CA Brive, then Clermont Auvergne before being signed by Toulon in 2014. Micheal Claassens, who has recently been linked with the Sharks will start at scrumhalf. Claassens was picked for the Springboks by Jake White in 2004 at the age of 22, before playing any provincial rugby for the Cheetahs. He played for the Boks 8 times between 2004 and 2007, after which he signed a contract for Bath rugby playing for them 92 times, before being signed by Toulon in 2013.

Then there is Bryan Habana, interestingly selected at outside centre for this game, Habana singed with Toulon in 2013. We know everything about him, including the fact that he started his career at outside centre. Habana mostly plays on the left wing for Toulon, although they have used him in the midfield before.

On the Sharks side we have a number of things to look forward to, like the return of Pieter-Steph (please stay injury free) du Toit. Losing him at the start of the season was a big blow to the Sharks, not to mention the Boks and the prospect of the second row combination of Etzebeth/Du Toit. Then there is the new Springbok halfback pairing, also returning for the Sharks for the first time since their injuries during the Bulls game last year. Another big blow to the Sharks season and another two players very much welcome back in Sharks colours.

Our new signings Mouritz Botha and Ronaldo Bothma will get their first run in a Sharks jersey. Bothma had an excellent season for the Pumas last year and with Jean Deysel and Keegan Daniel’s departure to Japan leaving our stocks in the backrow much thinner than we have become used to, his performance against strong opposition will be closely watched to determine how much we would be able to rely on him as cover for the injury riddled Willem Alberts.

Waylon Murray is another “new signing” to keep an eye on. The return of the 28 year old Springbok centre (that’s right, capped 4 times during 2007 – no question about his potential), has sparked some debate amongst fans. At 28 he is certainly not over the hill, but having tried and “failed” at 3 different unions since his departure in 2010, it is hard to believe that anything will be different now. Being a big fan of the 2007 midfield combination of Brad Barrit and Waylon Murray, who so nearly took us to our first Super Rugby trophy, I am excited to see if Waylon can recapture some of the potential he showed as a youngster. His combination with Heimar Williams is also an interesting one. Heimar has fallen out of favour with coaches in the recent past, with Andre Esterhuizen passing him in the packing order. Paul Jordaan was even selected out of position at inside centre over Williams. We don’t know if this Sharks team is any indication of first choice though. There are still a number of players  who will return to the squad in the coming weeks that will change the look of this starting team considerably, but this game will certainly be an opportunity for a few players to play for their spots.

Toulon and the Sharks are considered two of the best in their respective hemispheres. It’s pre-season for the Sharks and mid-season for Toulon. Will that matter to the players? Two quality sides with world class players clash for the first time – I don’t think there will be any lack of motivation to make this pre-season opener a great spectacle.

  • I have been thinking about Habana at center for a while now. I would like to see how he performs there. As for Heimar falling out of favor with coaches, why? He seems a stable and committed player and I am sure he would have had opportunity ahead of Esterhuizen in the last CC had he not suffered injury. It must also be said that he is in an unenviable position facing off against Steyn and Sithole and now the up and coming Esterhuizen for inside center. Hopefully he has an injury free season so that he can give them a run.

  • Hi SharksWorld people  Damn I have not been here in a long time! I am so excited to see our boys play again. I hope we give them a whipping   No better way to start the season and beat a really good side by a fair margin! And good luck to our new signings! I have been watching Renaldo Bothma closely , he’s got some talent. And I think we all know what we can get out of WM.

    PS : I’m a Pumas fan too ;-)

  • @Quintin (Comment 7) : think the Pumas is really going to miss JS and could be in some trouble if they don’t find a good replacement quickly.
