Dear Sharksworld Fantasy Leaguers

With the Super Rugby season just a week away I am doing some fantasy-rugby-due-diligence. Like Rob I too have been challenged to enter a fantasy rugby competition here in New Zealand – after a quick look at it (and I mean very quick) I was registered and in – but I’m looking for some help.

The competition is the big New Zealand wide competition and can be found at:

http://fantasysuperrugby.nzherald.co.nz

If anyone is interested in joining me for a bit of friendly fun/banter/rivalry during the course of the season I too have set up a Sharksworld Pool which can be found at the link below – if you are interested please feel free to join – the more the merrier (you must however register to play first):

http://fantasysuperrugby.nzherald.co.nz/group?cic=933072

But as with all things fantasy rugby there are plenty of competitions doing the rounds and some advice and guidance from a collective-brains-trust can sometimes be helpful to all of us trying to put together a competitive team in just under a week.

With that in mind I was hoping some of my South African brothers could help me with some player gems/advice before kick-off from a South African angle. What all fantasy leaguers need are players that are going to score much needed points and in saying that – we all need a little bit of crystal-ball-gazing in advance so it’s not a mad panic the night before the competition starts when we discover that half of our fantasy league side have not made their respective starting line-up’s!

My questions to you!

Question 1. Who will kick goals for each of the South African sides in Game 1 of the Super Rugby season?

Question 2. Who is an up-and-coming player to watch during the season that will make a starting line-up in week 1 (someone that might be under-valued at the beginning of the season who may be a great long-term investment)

In return here is a little bit of crystal-ball-gazing of my own that may help you in return with your sides. So for those of you that maybe interested here are my 5 New Zealand Super 15 players to watch from each of the franchises.

New Zealand Fantasy League Player-Watch

Blues – Hamish Northcott (Mid-field back)

Inside centre Northcott is in reality probably fourth in line at inside or outside centre behind the likes of George Moala, Pita Ahki, Dan Bowden and Francis Saili. However the injury to Daniel Bowden will give the young Manawatu mid-fielder an outside chance to feature in John Kirwin’s initial 22 and the word from inside the camp is he is travelling well and may feature earlier than expected for the Auckland franchise.

Chiefs – Seta Tamanivalu (Centre)

Get ready for Seta Tamanivalu to announce himself on Super Rugby in 2015. The Fijian was the first name on my Fantasy roster. It will be however interesting this week if he can crack the 22 for the Chiefs opening fixture away to the Blues in Auckland. The Taranaki centre was named player of the year in the ITM Cup where he literally destroyed sides single handedly. The added prospect of the 22 year old, 104kg, 1.89m beast teaming up outside a certain SBW makes for a fascinating proposition as long as you are not charged with marking up those channels in the opposition line-up.

Hurricanes – Nehe Milner-Skudder (Fullback)

If you are looking for running metres this unknown could be your man especially if you are looking for a bit of value. Likely to slot into the position vacated by Andre Taylor, Milne-Skudder could be the odd name out in a star studded Canes back line that could include All Blacks TJ Perenara at halfback, Beauden Barrett at first five, Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith in the midfield and Cory Jane and Julian Savea on the wings.

Crusaders – Nemani Nadolo (Wing)

I might break-the-fantasy-league-bank to include another giant Fijian. In his first Super season last year he was a revelation for the Saders and it looks like in 2015 the huge Fijian could again be just as potent, one thing is assured he will score tries.

Highlanders – Elliot Dixon (Blindside Flanker)

The versatile under-rated Highlander is very capable of racking up the 2015 fantasy league points. Able to wins lineout ball, turnovers as well as logging the running metres Dixon in his fourth year of Super Rugby could be a cheeky investment for the long-term from the southern franchise.

Good luck to all fantasy leaguer’s over the season with whatever competition you are involved in.

Select and manage well.

HH

  • In terms of question 1, Lambie and Pollard are probably certain starters for the Sharks and Bulls respectively but I had the time to follow the other sides to closely. Based on Ronaldo Bothma’s performances for the Pumas, he may be one to watch but it’s risky as we still don’t have a good grasp on the Sharks gameplan. The Bulls’ Jesse Kriel may be worth keeping an eye out for.

  • I’ve never been very good at the Fox Sports Fantasy league. I Kind of find I can never get Close to the Team I want to pick because the Budget restrictions force you to pick real no Name brands…I think the budgeting there Play too much of a role in deciding Teams. It also just takes too much time I don’t have to get the Team picked. For those reasons I prefer the udt Fantasy league, although it scores Players on FAR less aspects…
