Deysel! Deysel! Deysel!

Oh man, what amazing news we have this morning. Hot on the heels of my piece regarding loose forward depth we have the somewhat unexpected, but amazingly welcome, confirmation that Jean Deysel is back with the Sharks for Super Rugby.

Deysel, who left after Super Rugby last year to join Toyota Verblitz last year (somewhat unwillingly, if you read between the lines) is black and white to the bone, having played for the Sharks 116 times and it’s simply amazing to have a guy of his calibre and experience back in the mix. Coetzee-Deysel-Bothma, anyone? Yes please!

In a somewhat less surprising announcement, the Sharks have also confirmed that Toulon scrumhalf Michael Claassens will join them on a two-year deal. It’s not yet clear whether Deysel’s return is just for Super Rugby, or for Currie Cup as well.

Well done Sharks! And welcome home Wolla!

On a slightly more concerning note, I see Alberts is (Still!) struggling with an injury? Any news on that? To my knowledge he was 99.9% ready last year, and just missed out on touring with the Boks. Now this? Eish…

  • Great news.

    Coetzee
    Bothma
    Alberts
    Deysel
    Kanko

Back row sorted. And Oosthuizen can shore up our 4 lock stocks.

Still need a quality backup to Jordaan at 13 and any quality 15s would be also welcome.

Judging by his dancing skills on that video that went viral, I don’t think its too serious.

He had a back injury which has bees sorted and then in pre season training picked up a hammy injury. Apparently theyre being very patient with him and he’ll be ready next weekend.

Plus, hopefully Claasens won’t take too long in joining us, then we won’t have to see Hoffman any where near the team for a while! Now just to get a real fullback or to back Van Tonder.

  • What awesome news about Deysel.

Claassens looked ok against the Sharks last week, but I would still rather they backed a young player like Ungerer to back up Reinach. Nice to have a bit of depth though, it’s going to be a long season.

  • I hope this means PSdT sticks to lock for two reasons:
    1. I believe PSdT playing 7 increases the risk of injury to him (based on how 7′s at the Sharks tend to be considered human battering rams)
    2. He needs to settle at 5 because we know that’s where Meyer is keen to select him for the Bok squad

  • The local teams must be starting to get a little worried, we are dominating the news for all the right reasons. Depth is once again an embarrassment of riches, fantastic acquisitions taking place. With a good rotation policy in place, this is making for a big season. I will be watching the #9 channel, and #15 with a keen eye, loose forward takes care of itself with some big bruisers and direct to the ball players players. Hoffman currently seems surplus to requirement, I would like to see Ungerer and Wright rotated on the bench to increase experience.
