Boks’ five-game maximum in 2015

SARU has reached an agreement with the five South African Super Rugby franchises that will see the game time of several key World Cup squad members carefully managed through the 2015 season.

None of the specific players has been mentioned by name – although you can pretty much imagine who would be on the list, Heyneke Meyer being somewhat of a creature of habit when it comes to selection. The announcement only states that each player will be managed on a case by case basis, but does seem to impose a hard five-game limit for identified players – in other words, none of the identified men will be allowed to play more than five Super Rugby game in succession without being afforded a break.

The implications of this for the Sharks are perhaps not quite as dire as they may have been if enforced last year, given that Gary Gold and his team are a lot more pro rotation than Jake White was. I would imagine that, for instance, proactive management of Bismarck du Plessis and sensible rotation with Kyle Cooper and Monde Hadebe would prevent the situation where the national body would need to step in and enforce any absolute ban. With so many key Sharks forwards assumed to be on the list (I would imagine Beast Mtawarira, both du Plessis brothers, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Marcell Coetzee and Willem Alberts will all face some restriction) there is definitely going to have to be some shrewd maneuvering on the part of the brains trust to ensure that a competitive pack can be fielded week after week without ruffling any feathers.

The biggest winner here, besides the likes of Cooper and his fellow front-row deputies, would be someone like Fred Zeilinga. As the heir apparent to Pat Lambie’s crown at flyhalf, the young product of Glenwood is unavoidably going to find himself thrust into the spotlight as starting flyhalf at various points throughout the season and this must surely present a massive opportunity for Zeilinga to once again underline his class.

  • Sensible. Should have been enforced first time Super Rugby was expanded.

  • So they have to be rested for at least 3 games during the Super Rugby season? Unless the beys works out otherwise.

  • Sharks play 10 rounds before first bey. So Every Bok player would have to be rested once or twice during this period, depending on how early they were rested. We then play another 6 Rounds before our next bey. Which means each player would have to be rested 1 more time before this bey.

The good thing for us is that if we manage to get into the play-offs we’d be able to play our guys from round 13 straight to the final, since the bey will give everyone a rest before having played 5 games in a row. So there will be minimal disruption in the last 10 weeks or so.

  • I agree with rotation and resting, and it shouldn’t just feature in a RWC year, you cannot expect a body to take a hammering week in week, consecutively for almost a year. Its crazy. If you have a good cycle in place and you manage your players you would be able to develop a fantastic squad. It was stated that more demanding positions (pack) would require more rest to that of the backline, but mental freshness is just as important, I am all for it! Sharks should have been trendsetters ages ago, love the Venter approach.

  • @Letgo (Comment 4) : The Playoofs dont count towards the 5 games. ie the ‘strongest’ side will always play. Hopefully a SA side makes it far.

  • Actually I think many more will benefit than just the front rowers and Fred. Waylon Murray will get a chance to re-establish his career in Frans Steyn’s absence (we know the boks MUST include him if they want to stand a chance) maybe even Paul Perez (JP/Mvovo) too. Jack Wilson will get a chance to impress when JP/Mvovo are on bok duty. Claasens, Ungerer when Cobus isn’t there. basically our entire backline save 13 and 15.

  • @JD (Comment 5) : Agreed 100% if anything it should have been consolidated into large regions. Lions and Bulls together Stormers, Boland and Border, Cheetahs and Griekwas Sharks and Kings. There would have been major depth for everyone and exposure to international rugby for the guys in lesser clubs.

  • Biggest winners ONCE AGAIN will be teams who don’t have to sacrifice as much as Sharks. Lions et al. I support my country but it seems the Sharks franchise has been receiving punishment the past few years (this years CC included) for producing the best players.

  • Reading this the old adage of Black and White before Green and Gold ,springs to mind.
Can you imagine this being enforced in any other professional sport.Imagine van Gaal or Mouerinhou being told to rest their club players in a World Cup year.
Juat hope we don’t end up in a situation where Lambie is taken out of 5 key Sharks games, and ends up warming the bench for Pollard and,or Morne Steyn.
