Beast blow for Sharks

As the dust settles on a disappointing opening weekend for the Sharks, there is one bit of news that’s truly awful – Beast Mtawarira suffered a calf muscle tear against the Cheetahs on Saturday and is now facing an undetermined, but likely extended, period on the sidelines.

Director of Rugby Gary Gold has revealed that the decision to keep Bismarck du Plessis out of action last week was a precautionary one, given the length of the season and the risk in him aggravating a minor shoulder tear. The call was only made on Saturday morning, with Gold’s reasoning being to rather lose his captain for one week now, than for six or more later on.

Du Plessis is thus expected to feature against the Lions, which is good news for a Sharks front row that will now need to make do without fellow Bok Mtawarira for a good few weeks. Dale Chadwick, who impressed with his work rate against the Cheetahs, will now come in and will have plenty of work to do to help turn around a less than convincing Sharks scrum display.

Thomas du Toit, who has not been in action yet this year and is understood to have some fitness concerns himself, may well come into the reckoning this week, while it’s also possible that Matt Stevens could be asked to deputise at loosehead, with Lourens Adriaanse coming in as backup for Jannie du Plessis.

  • Chadwick’s work rate was excellent – scrumming not so much.

Stevens’ name on the teamsheet makes me VERY nervous.

  • Matt Stevens. I was excited at his experience initially, but if I look at the talent we’ve lost – his name and his performances just make me a little furious. An out of shape unfit and technically inferior prop has replaced Danie Mienie. Julian Redlinghuys and Wiehan Herbst. Lourens Adriaanse has been nothing short of shocking, a big blow to lose Beast, I have faith in Chadwick and the Tank, but Tighthead just makes me angry.

  • Rest up and get well soon big guy! It’s good to hear that Bismarck is being managed sanely for a change.

@Richard (Comment 5) : Matt Stevens really impressed in the first couple of Currie Cup games he featured in last year and then just seemed to fizzle out. What happened to the guy?

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : Currie Cup is nothing to write home about, Rookies tore him apart in the matches that matter and he is not at international level anymore. He is out of shape and offers nothing. Look at the physical condition of Vincent Koch, look at Stevens. Disgusting. There is a reason he last played for England an age ago. He is quite simply a liability.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : The guy is old and came home to ease into retirement with a couple of 15 min appearances every second week, never in his wildest dreams did he think he would ever have to start and end a full game.
Hell Os du Randt looks in better condition

  • @Poisy (Comment 7) : his diet must be awesome. You cannot be fit if you have so much excess fat – and expect to be a serious rugby player. Look at Jannie and Beast, Tank and Chadwick, look at Vincent Koch – lean, strong, fit. It’s disrespectful to hard working professionals to have a sloth in your ranks. He doesn’t deserve The Sharks jersey, he didn’t earn it, and doesn’t deserve it. Krosis.

  • Sorry I’m ranting. I’m a 30 something and spend 5 days a week in gym – all I do is sit behind a desk with a laptop, a fit body, a fit mind. I don’t see fitness there, and it shows. I’m in ire when I see Stevens roll his lard into the scrum.

  • @Richard (Comment 11) : don’t attack the player he was deemed good enough by coaches and management. he doesn’t pick himself after all. but it is sad to see our juniors doing so well elsewhere, i am worried about kyle cooper and his throwing he just doesn’t take his chances when he is handed them.

  • @Poisy (Comment 13) : I am attacking the player, because even though the coaches selected him, he is responsible for his performance. If I’m employed to do the job and perpetually stuff up, is that the employers fault? Nope. But if I’m perpetually allowed to stuff up. Then that is the employers fault. Action is required. He must go on a diet or he must be fired from his contract.

  • Beeeeeaaaaasssst! I was kind of vocal  against Botha being signed, more so than Stevens. I will admit I was wrong. Botha has been awesome and Stevens…well, not so much. Every time he gets penalized he pulls his jersey over his belly and gives the ref this look: “What did I do?”

  • Gutted for Beast, hopefully he could be ready to play sooner than expected!I am not too worried about this game, when the Sharks loose we all want to pull our hair out(including me) and over analise every little detail of what went wrong, but when the Saders loose, its always “the always start out slowly and build up to the knockouts, never peaking too soon”…if this what happened,I’m very glad we lost,i’d rather loose now than 2 weeks before the knockouts needing a win for a home semi(last year ring a bell?)
So guys looked a bit rusty..they can only improve from here,Stevens came in straight after the English season,so was match fit, gradually running out of steam last year, now he will be working his way back up there? On another note,I cant remember a time when he looked any other way?Nobody questioned Matt Dunnings fitness while a Wallaby?

  • @robdylan (Comment 25) @Richard (Comment 26) : Not joking here. Working one’s way through the 5 stages of grief in what amounts to less than 7 days can get a little ‘bumpy’. Always good to take a step back every now and then and reevalute how emotionally involved one should get in each Sharks’ game. On a related note, spare a thought for our fellow Bulls’ fans here behind the ‘boerewors gordyn’ who are suffering even worse than we are. They take a Stormers loss at home really hard and they don’t even have a losing bonus point to show for it this time.

  • ay my bru beast ne man jinne. Losing a game is erg but losing a very valuable springbok player is just the bloody pits ay. On a lighter note, loved RIchards ranting lol, Why did you stop the guy lmao. @vanmartin (Comment 28) : You reckon we should start a grieve councelling class here on sharksworld? I have to admit, Eskom saved me a bit on Saturday, when they hit me with loadshedding, my depression was mounting to the point of bursting and then Eskom decided that enough is enough boet, no more rugby for you.
