Time to settle

It’s Tuesday and in the absence of much news, it’s time for my weekly rant. It’s about the Sharks, of course and it’s about a couple of home truths that we all seem to have completely forgotten in the light of some ultimately meaningless pre-season “good news”.

I’ve been trying harder than most to resist the hype – the announcement of new coaches by the bucket load, the overhauling of structures, the recruitment of players to add depth. All of these signs, in isolation, point to a time of exciting change in the Sharks ranks. With a strong coaching team and squad full of quality depth, surely a fantastic – nay trophy-winning – Super Rugby season must be in store? I mean, surely?

Take all the best ingredients you can find, chuck them into a bowl and your cake is ready to eat, not so? Makes perfect sense?

Except it doesn’t really, since even a really cheap cake, using Betty Crocker cake mix, two eggs and a bit of oil, needs at least some time in the oven before it’s edible. Better cakes take longer, but one thing that certainly doesn’t help is trying to change half of the ingredients and the entire recipe halfway through the baking process.

Now what sort of cake do you think you’d end up with if you changed the recipe five times before you were done? I bet you wouldn’t have particularly high hopes for that cake, even though you may have started out with ingredients that were “the best in the world”. I mean, surely you don’t have to coach an egg to be an egg, right? It’s a professional, that egg. It just knows what it has to do.

John Plumtree, Grant Bashford (briefly), Brendan Venter, Jake White, Brad Macleod-Henderson and Gary Gold have all bashed these same poor eggs around in turn over the last 2 years and it wouldn’t surprise me if a good few of them are now rather well scrambled. They can train as hard and as well as you like (to move away from the baking analogy, since you have all worked out that by “eggs” I mean “players”) but it’s game time that’s needed for each new philosophy to become ingrained. It’s been one game. Let’s all calm down, put our sense of angry entitlement to one side and give the boys a bit of time to figure it all out.

  • Ok, so its lunch time and you’ve ‘overcooked’ this baking analogy – what makes me think you were hungry when penning this!

Good point though, and I must say, ‘guilty as charged’. Hard not too let the ‘hype-fed’ emotions take over here.

Just seeing that list of coaches that we have gone through again, is a good reminder of the sheer turmoil that the institution has been through – completely out of the control of the players – so you right perhaps we should cut them some slack. Perhaps not the management however which was responsible for it.

  • To be honest, despite the loss I rather enjoyed the game on Saturday. There were lots of very promising signs. I think Saturday’s game was the first time in ages we have seen Lambie have a good running and passing game and a good kicking game in the same match! There’s a lot of work to be done, but we haven’t really had a pre season. The game against Toulon was more a point to prove and had little to do with our game plan for the season by the looks of it.

  • So question: how long do we let the cake that is the Sharks cook in the oven? Weeks? Months? As i said on a previous thread i dont mind losing when we implementing a clear and well thought out game plan. But when we bunched up, 1 off runners and then we drop the ball…i then start taking bigger gulps of my beer

My only question is?What if one or two of those ingredients weren’t supposed to be there in the first place.Like Waylon and SP? Im sure we can tweak the recipe just a little as we go along!

  • @SheldonK (Comment 14) : it’s going to take as long as it’s going to take, is the thing and there’s really not much that “we” can do about that. Because to be honest, the only thing we can do to change it right now is to chuck it all away and start all over again again. And that would be just stupid.

I think we need to be realistic. I don’t think we’re going to win Super Rugby this year. And that’s actually ok with me.

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : Fair point. My question was more around how long Smitty and Sponsors will allow. I agree i dont think we quite know what we wanna do on the field hence players looking a bit flustered. I also think it will be more settled once all the guys from Japan etc are back and into it. This first game looked like a disjointed first Currie Cup game.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 32) : Smitty is the guy who needs to take this on the chin and show leadership. Many of these calls have been his. In fact, all of the calls.

So now he needs to stand up and lay down what the plan and the goal is. Gary is there for 3 years. I will judge the taste of this cake 12-18 months into his tenure.

  • Positives:
    - lot more attacking intent than last year
    - one or two bouts of very slick back line handling under pressure
    - lot more off-loading
    Negatives:
    - unable to exit our 22 after kickoffs
    - still too many handling errors
    - set piece not very solid
    - breakdown not always accurate
    - too many silly penalties conceded
    - poor defense at times
    - unable to convert visits to oppo 22 into points

I see some progress, and I will be happy if it just continues on an upwards curve

  • @robdylan (Comment 35) : Yes Smitty does need to take responsibility of where we are now. On the other hand I think he, the team and most of the support staff also know where we are, where we want to be and how to get us there (and by us Im including the fans, whom I think are very important to him. The honeymoon is over but I think all know this and have their future plans well worked out with a clear vision of how to get there.

  • Hi all. Don’t get me started on the baking thing. As a baker (or one who bakes a lot),the key is fresh ingredients even if it is a ‘box cake’(Betty Crocker – no she is not our new psychologist!).If one egg is not so fresh, it spoils the whole batch (team). Secondly,is to mix slower for all ingredients to combine & only then speed up. Sharks can take heed of that.Another thing is to not over beat the mixture or mix at very high speed.Cohesion & continuity.Lastly you can’t have a cake until it is baked in the oven.We can’t win SR or CC at first game.Once cake has baked through, take out of oven, ice it & enjoy. Sharks, remember slowly, slowly catchie monkey. Take it a cake (sorry, game) at a time. The right combinations will come with experience (experiments)
