Few changes expected

The Sharks are likely to be forced into some “attritional rotation” in the front row this week, but otherwise should hopefully stick with much the same squad as played against the Cheetahs on Saturday.

There’s, of course, always the temptation to make changes after a loss – particularly an unexpected one – but in this case, I feel that approach would send out completely the wrong message. While the shkars weren’t great against the men from Bloem, my feeling is that rather than looking at individuals, we should acknowledge that the team as a whole didn’t fire. It is thus correct, in my view, to give that same team (or as close to it as we can manage) an opportunity to redeem themselves against the Lions.

Dale Chadwick will come in for Beast Mtawarira at loosehead prop – this we know given the latter’s injury. Should Bismarck du Plessis be fit to play (as we’ve been told) it’s likely he’ll return to lead the side, seeing Kyle Cooper drop to the bench and Monde Hadebe fall out of the 23.

Apart from those changes, I’m not expecting any other movements nor do I feel the coaches should make any. It’s still very early days and continuity has to come before rotation at this stage of the season.

  • I agree that we shouldnt change much, but that midfield just doesnt seem right in the context of the rest of the backline.

Do we have enough pace and flair to take on an exciting Lions backline? Not feeling too confident right now…

  • I thought Waylon was nowhere near as bad as most people on this site are making out. I also thought Heimar did some good things; my concern is that he may be found wanting in the physicality stakes. And S’bura just looked like a fish out of water on the wing. I’d prefer him at 13 over Waylon, but if the coaches think Waylon is the better bet, I’d rather see S’bura on the bench and an out and out wing in at 14.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : The shkars?(Freudian slip?)
I believe the game will be up front with the loosies. Head to head with arguably the best setup outside of the Sharks. Imagine Coetzee,Deysel/Bothma,Mthembu/Kanko against those three! We need the physicality of Esterhuizen at 13. SP needs another chance at 15. In the front, why are we not using Adriaanse? Is he crocked?Odwa (as much as I think he is a good player) has lost some pace & let’s try him as impact at 15?Give Sbura another game at wing & then see if he shapes up.Reinach also seems to need to focus a bit more & Lambie must do what he does best – control the game (marshal the troops)& keep ball in hand when needed.Let’s hope Bismarck has his head in the game as well.As Rob says, not much should change unless it is a forced change.Continuity should reign supreme!

  • @Culling Song (Comment 2) : I tend to agree on Murray, he wasn’t terrible but it just seemed at times that he was he was mistiming passes to Sbu who consequently very quickly ran out of space and options. Mvovo could probably still cope in those circumstances but as a lot of people have mentioned, Sbu just doesn’t look as comfortable on the wing. You want Sbu starting when he’s not rotated so play him where he’s most comfortable. It comes at the expense of Murray but he could still be a good bench option.

  • I also feel like we should try to start with the same team we did last week. Yes, some players didn’t look the best, but maybe another game or two would give us a more clear and fair assessment of where they are.

Most want to change the midfield and SP (I think largely based on our preconceived ideas), but our forwards weren’t great against the Cheetahs and didn’t always give the backs much to work with.

I though both of our centers had a few good moments, enough that I would like to see them again, I was also impressed with SP for large parts of the game. He did go a little quiet in the second half, but that’s not necessarily the worst thing, since we sometimes see starting to make big blunders when the pressure is on, which this time, I think we all agree, he didn’t.

Sburu was a bit of a disappointment on the wing, but again, he wasn’t given much space. Let’s see how he goes in a game where we are able to create some room for him to look good in.

It’s very tempting to start with Deysel, but Botma didn’t do anything wrong either (okay a couple of knocks starting the game, but then he got over that and delivered a game witha very high work rate).

I think next week we could see one or two changes, but this week, I think this team has it in them to take on the Lions.

  • This discussion of Sithole wing vs centre is interesting. After the Toulon match, I honestly believed that he was very lacking defensively on the wing and was a significant liability to the Sharks, both Toulon tries were due to a defensive lapse by Sbu. I went and watched some matches from last year where he played 13, and defensively he was absolutely superb and added significantly to the Sharks defensive efforts. It certainly seems to me there is a significant difference between his defensive abilities on the wing versus centre. I would definitely be playing him at 13. But what do I know. ;-)

  • Whats the opinion on Jaco v Tonder? Is he anywhere near ready for S15 duty yet? I agree that the team of last week should continue playing my doubts were with Murray (still no conclusive answers there) and SP Marais (unfortunately still no proof of definite improvement) but the rest of the team seemed to do well. Botha and PSDT seem to be bonding very well so i wouldn’t break that up, just wonder who should be playing alongside Deysel at flank. I cannot imagine picking a squad without Marcell but surely we need a quicker flank since Deysel is already bringing the grunt on the other end? To me Bothma is worth every cent and he should be in the starting pack with Marcell as impact. Marcell needs to work on offloads and perhaps learn how to run angles?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 32) : Marcel has been a blindside/number 8 all his life, just last year he was thrust into the openside position both at the Sharks and for the Boks, and both with the Sharks and internationally he very quickly became incredibly effective at the breakdown. Marcel is by far the best openside flank both at the Sharks and playing in SA at the moment. It sounds from your message that you would really like to see a back row of 6 Marcel, 7 Deysel and 8 Bothma. Pretty good option I think. We still need someone to play openside so Marcel can be rested from time to time.

They paired quite well during CC and they need to play at this position in order to be decent backup for Frans/Jordaan/JPP if they get slotted into center positions?

Cheetahs loosies, were more than a match for the much vaunted Sharks loosies.
You have Kanko and Alberts due back. We have Brüssow still to return.

I will throw Brüssow, Mohoje/Cook and Willie in against the Sharks backrow anyday. The pack stood up big time, which freed up our loosies for a change.

A glance at the ruck stats on Sanzar site give the Cheetahs a 100% ruck success. Mthembu’s break was courtesy of the ref…. Deysel was good and gave direction, can hardly recall seeing Coetzee.

Tera is a ball carrier and linking player like Kanko, also don’t think he is best utilised at 6. Honestly, Deysel has in the past been very good at openside, he too can play to the ball very effectively and is also excellent on the ground. Personally I think he is the best option to rest Marcel. Remember, we have Alberts coming back at some point, and Bothma is superb at 7, as well as Tera.

  • Tighthead Prop. (Backup)
    Inside Centre.
    Outside Centre.

Three positions where debate is strongest.

These next few weeks are going to be crucial, those who are playing on borrowed time, until the Japan Sharks are up an running need to prove why the deserve to be there more regularly.

If Lourens Adriaanse is not injured, and he isn’t as far as I know, he needs to be Tighthead backup. Thomas on the bench as Loosehead backup.

I’m tempted to change the midfield, with Esterhuizen and Sithole given a shot, but if Heimar and Murray can create sparks, then good for them, but another average performance would call for a change.

Alberts, Deysel, Coetzee, Tera, Kanko, Bothma. 4/6 can feature every game day 23, so rotation will need to be handled well.

As tempted as I am to start with Deysel because he’s that good, I trust him more to close out a game than say Tera or Bothma, so I expect another vintage 30 minute appearance from him and he ups the teams tempo with his physicality and presence.

Going to be an interesting game. As another loss will start to cause severe doubt at home. Need a strong performance this weekend. Close out the game where we couldn’t last week. Need to thump the Lions for morale and confidence and believe in the pattern of play they want to achieve.

In addition, Adriaanse has become far too much of a pugnacious type player, often initiating after the whistle handbagging. I wonder if it might be a good idea to develop Thomas DuToit as a tighthead for the future, I believe he has played tighthead before.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 41) : Matt Stevens and Adriaanse are far from ideal back-up players. Adriaanse should’ve been the answer and he is not performing. Stevens is a Northern Hemisphere player and struggles down south. I’d neither Adriaanse or Stevens step up we are in trouble. And we need to identify and recruit new blood asap as Jannie is gone. Beast is also gone at the end of this season and Chadwick and Thomas are the heir apparent. If Thomas is up for TH then sure, but there is a reason is gunning the Loosehead spot as he is Springbok Loosehead material.

But to be frank the Sharks are in trouble at prop as if Thomas were to shift, then other than Chadders, there are no players shouting for LH either. I would stick to my guns and develop them both at LH and start yesterday with finding a promising few TH players. Wiehan Herbst needs to come home, so does Redlinghuys. Doesn’t make sense does it? Especially when you know your warhorse is off to greener pastures soon. That said, I did think he was older than 27. ;)
