Changes as injuries bite

The Sharks have been forced into more changes than they would have liked for Saturday’s clash against the Lions, with two key players in Mouritz Botha and S’bura Sithole joining Beast Mtawarira on the injury list after the pair picked up knocks against the Cheetahs.

Odwa Ndungane comes in at right wing in a straight swap for Sithole, while there’s an opportunity for Giant Mtayanda to make his Super Rugby debut as Pieter-Steph du Toit’s lock partner. Brought in at the start of the year as cover, the Pumas man has already been thrust into the fray as Etienne Oosthuizen and Botha have picked up injuries in successive matches. He joins provincial team mate Renaldo Bothma in the starting lineup and for those with an eye for random facts, this will (surely) be the first time that a Super Rugby team has featured two men boasting the first name Lubabalo. The other is, of course, eighthman Tera Mtembu.

In anticipated changes, Dale Chadwick starts for Mtawarira, while Bismarck du Plessis returns at hooker and takes over the captaincy from Pat Lambie.

Thomas du Toit and Andre Esterhuizen, two of the young and upcoming stars of Sharks rugby, feature on the bench.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Tera Mtembu, 7 Renaldo Bothma, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Giant Mtayanda, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis (capt), 1 Dale Chadwick
Subs: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Matt Stevens, 19 Marco Wentzel, 20 Jean Deysel, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Fred Zeilinga, 23 Andre Esterhuizen

  • Officially concerned. With the shortage of back line stars, we need to win at the gain line. Not sure that our pack can do that though.

    Anyway – GO SHARKS!!!

  • I would like to see some back line play. Please sharks, just chuck the ball around a little bit? I’m not saying we should play kamikaze rugby, just that it’ll be nice to see the centers getting the ball. And the wings.

  • So Esterhuizen is going to create the gaps and Murray is going to run around them in the second half.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 1) : At least Bismarck adds a lot of oomph at the breakdown. Giant was quite a handful in the Currie Cup – hopefully he can step up to super rugby.

The big worry is the scrums – against one of the better SA scrumming units.

  • I’m excited for Giant. He was impressive for the Pumas and showed so much heart. He’s a big man (1.99m, 116KG according to wiki, compared to Mouritz 1.98m, 114kg). We shouldn’t lose any grunt and he also seems like a guy who can cause some havoc when he’s let loose into some space.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) :

Yip, there was a sudden shift at some point and the Sharks just started to struggle at scrum time. I don’t think there’s any doubt in anyone’s minds anymore, that the Lions are SA’s strongest scrumming unit (Bar HM maybe).

The Sharks haven’t had a dominant scrumming game in a while.

Chadwick have definitely improved lately, so I don’t think we’ll be able to pin it on him. Bissie is back, so the one change should not have too much of an impact.

We need to scrum as a unit and get the ball out quickly on our ball. Or hope for a weird reffing game (they sometimes enjoy going against the dominant team – has happened to the Sharks before).

  • Positives:
    - Bissie back at 2
    - Consistency where possible
    - Thomas on the bench
    - Andre on the bench

    Concerns:
    - Botha and Sithole’s injuries
    - Deysel not starting
    - Giant leapfrogging Wentzel (although perhaps we need the grunt)
    - Stevens ahead of Adriaanse (unless he is injured?)

His scrumming is very inconsistent for me. I’ve seen him have strong performances at scrum time. I don’t know what it is with him.

I don’t think Beast would have made much of a difference this week though. The Lions have dominated our strongest pack every time, the last few times. Now we just definitely know it’s coming and might have a plan in place and adapt accordingly right from the start.

Get the ball out quick – don’t make handling errors (a good one in any event)!

  • @Another Nick (Comment 23) :

When you know your scrum won’t be a weapon (with Beast playing we might still have thought this is a possibility) you can adapt.

Our biggest mistake against stronger scrum opposition lately, was that we were under the illusion that we were still the strongest scrumming team.

I think it’s a bit of an arrogance think. It’s to hard to admit we lost it and so we continue to play as though we will dominate teams at scrum time. Unfortunately it would seem we would have to pick our days and accept that some days, it will be our scrum that will be targeted.

They were so bunched and predictable last week. Its all well and good saying they wanna play ball in hand rugby, but if the ball goes from the scumhalfs hands to the forwards hands all the time that not exactly running rugby.Im looking for more deception and looking for forwards acting as decoys- its unlikely but theres eternal hope

  • A bit of a blow with Botha out. Our locks are obviously in short supply with injuries, but we can be lucky to have the depth. I’m not concerned with our tight forwards, but our loose trio is quite heavy in comparison to the mobile trio the Lions have. So once again the collision point and breakdown will be vital. Set-piece is a concern with accuracy and scrum time. A titanic battle awaits. Bad luck for Sbu, but at least we have a right wing in Odwa who is a pure wing, Sbu wants to be a centre and it shows, so that’s actually maybe a blessing in disguise. When Sbu returns to fitness he needs to fight it out for the 13 jersey. Come hell or waters high?, we need to win this game, and the team knows that. They will be hungry for a victory.

  • @Letgo (Comment 26) : Agreed. Cobus should just put the ball in as skew as he can get away with, Bissie to quickly hook it through to Tera who picks up and run like hell. If you know your scrumming unit is inferior to your opponents, you don’t have many other options..

Willem Alberts, Stephan Lewies, JC Astle, Ryan Kankowski, Tonderai Chivanga, Paul Jordaan, Francois Kleinhans, Ettiene Oosthuizen, Tendai Mtawarira, Mouritz Botha, S’buru Sithole

Frans Steyn, JP Pietersen, Micheal Claasens

    Lourens Adriaanse?

    14 – Am I missing a few.

Considering Perez and Wilson have not been used, seen or mentioned yet … maybe they aren’t available either.

Wilson played in Saracens warm-up, so maybe he is playing out their season.

There are only 23 spots in a matchday squad, hence not everyone can play. It doesn’t mean they aren’t available, just that they haven’t been selected (yet).

There is nothing wrong with Kanko, Kleinhans, Adriaanse, Perez or Wilson

The injured list is like this:
Beast, Lewies, Botha, Oosthuizen, Alberts, Jordaan, Sithole, Chavhanga. It’s longer than we’d like and skewed towards locks, but hardly too alarming at this stage.

I wasn’t sure whether Perez/Wilson is available for selection yet. Also thought Kanko was still going through a few fitness test, but suppose if Mtembu was injured, he’d be used regardless this weekend.

This was more a list of our depth – players that can still be used (at some point in the future), if needed – But I get that some of them would not have been used, even if they were available.

Adriaanse, I wasn’t sure about. Just seems like he fell out of favor real quickly.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 42) : I rate Tera, just think he’ll give us more value as an impact player. At least until we find our groove. We now need to be in a position to dominate. That means strong pack that will be very deliberate. Cheetahs loose forwards were bigger stronger and faster. Team with the better loose forward combo win most games.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 70) : I think Tera’s mobility would have been better suited to this lions game than Coetzee. I would have liked to see Deysel, Mtenbu and Bothma (nr 8). Coetzee would have been god on impact.

  • injury list here: http://www.sanzarrugby.com/superrugby/match-centre/injury-list/ . however it doesn’t seem to be kept up to date.
Matt Stevens ahead of Adriaanse surely a mistake? Deysel Kanko Bothma should have been starters (kanko probably not yet past fitness testing).

  • @Letgo (Comment 52) : Perez/Wilson both seem to be very strong carriers from what Ive seen on youtube. But the handling? Wilson quite a big boy at 1.89 and its always good to have a big strong wing. We don’t have much cover for wings and fullbacks only Esterhuizen. I still say Lambie should have been at 15 as he can be moved to centre or FH and Zeilinga at 10. Hofmann is taking up a valuable reserve space is Claasens not ready to test yet? This might be a way of thinning out the fringe players? Whats the strategy?
