Sharks ruthless in the wet

The Sharks played the wet conditions better to record a 29-12, bonus point victory over the Lions at a rainy Kings Park tonight.

Gary Gold’s team have now moved themselves back up into the right half of the log, with two tries in either half to none by their visitors. With driving rain falling throughout proceedings, the Sharks’ victory was built on a strong first half showing, where some rather unexpected scrum dominance laid the perfect platform. Pat Lambie and Marnitz Boshoff traded penalties in the opening quarter as the teams felt each other out, before the Sharks’ tactical dominance and sensible territorial kicking game brought them strongly into the Lions half later on. Lambie found Odwa Ndungane with a superb cross kick for the opening try, with Cobus Reinach stretching over for the second not long after, after a rampant scrum effort.

At 15-3 ahead, the home side were cruising. Boshoff brought his team back within 9 as the break loomed, with a missed penalty and conversion by Lambie the only blight on an otherwise superb half.

Johan Ackermann played his masterstroke early in the second stanza, with his reserve front row adding the impetus up front that the starters had lacked. With the Sharks showing some nerves – with the kicks that were so assured in the first half now going astray and more often than not skewing into touch on the full, it was the Lions who suddenly had territory and possession and while at great credit to the Sharks defence, the visitors didn’t score, Boshoff added two further penalties to bring his team within range at 15-12.

If a response is what was wanted, the Sharks gave that to their coaching staff in the final quarter, with the forwards stepping up to once again dominate proceedings. Thomas du Toit played a big role as substitute loose head, overturning any slight scrum advantage the Lions had gained through the introduction of Julian Redelinghuys. From that dominance, a penalty ensured and Pat Lambie found the corner well enough. Pieter-Steph du Toit rose supreme in the lineout, Marcell Coetzee scored from the driving maul and with Lambie’s conversion, the Sharks were again well out in front. The beaten Lions had no counter and it fell to Coetzee to repeat the feat 5 minutes from time to sew up the bonus point, but not before Warren Whiteley had capped a poor day with a yellow card for a cynical infringement in the red zone.

Sharks (29): Tries Odwa Ndungane, Cobus Reinach, Marcell Coetzee (2). Conversions Pat Lambie (3). Penalties Lambie
Lions (12): Penalties Marnitz Boshoff (4)

  • Was a good win,but it was against the Lions, who will probably end up last in the competition.
Thought Pat was great, even if he missed a couple of kicks, his tactical kicking was amazing.
Deysel again made an impact, but for me MOM was Marcel, hard to believe he is only 24.
Conditions were terrible haven’t seen K.P like that since the French semi in 95.
I will keep my opinion of S.P to myself except to say hurry back Frans Steyn.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 6) : I see nobody has responded to you yet, so here goes:
    1. Our scrum improvement was pleasing…and epic. Jannie had his best game in a long time. A lot of people who have been trash-talking him were silenced today. Chadwick had a good game and was solid in the scrums…and clearly Bismarck made a difference! Giant had a good game and I’m willing to bet he made a difference in the scrums too. I’ve always said the locks contribute greatly to a steady scrum. It was very good to see Thomas back…and he steadied the ship after the wobbles of the third quarter.
    2. Our lineouts were much better. Bar one miss by Giant and one poor throw by Bismarck, it was really good. And PSdT was a…ummm…Giant!!
    3. Our defence was very good! Very aggressive defence often drive the Lions back…
    4. We didn’t really see enough of the backs to comment much. Lambie’s general play was excellent, the centres were defensively very effective, but no chance to show their running skills. Odwa was very solid. S.P. was defensively much stronger, though there were some poor kicks mixed in there.
    5. Our breakdown was far more effective!
    6. There was a stage at the beginning of the second half when the Lions dominated possession and territory. Our defence was good, but in that time there were numerous pointless and poorly executed kicks.
    7. All in all a very good result in those conditions…with the bonus point being a real bonus!!

  • Wow, what an improvement. We crossed their try line 7 times of which 4 was awarded. They crossed ours? Giant Mtyanda awesome first game, I expect great things from him. Renaldo Bothma once again proved why he definitely belongs there, great man to have. I hope we make both of them permanent members of the family. SP Marais in my opinion had a much better game and apart from one or 2 slips looked composed, confident well done SP keep it up! Lambie, well what can I say about him? He is always a star. I would have liked to see Esterhuizen pair up with Murray much sooner but Heimar played well. Marcell Coetzee, I apologise. I said he should come in as impact player, he was impact player for 80 minutes!

I’m going to say what I (and probably most of the bulls fans would agree) think, the cutting should probably start with the coaching and management. They have all the main ingredients but no one who knows how to bake the cake? Couldn’t resist bringing the baking analogy back…

  • I think its no coincidence that the Lions got some ascendancy at the beginning on the 2nd half when they replaced their front row 2 minutes into the half. We started replacing our front row around the 55 min mark… ish? Maybe someone can confirm but it seemed later than usual. Think its safe to say we dominated from the 60th min til the end. Our pack from there were always a good 10-15 minutes fresher than the lions.

2 moments that stick out for me in that game for me.
    1. Jannie’s reaction speed to a poorly defended ruck.
    2. SP’s counter ruck immediately after the try saving tackle, which slowed things down enough for our defense to form.

And no sooner does he redeem himself than he does something that sets the Sharks back. I get confused a lot watching that guy. I just want him to do well

  • Now that performance was what I was hoping for from the guys; the scrum dominance of the Sharks surprised the ‘expert’ commentators on Supersport and rugby365, which shows that sometimes even the experts are wrong. It’s refreshing for the Sharks to surprise like they did on tour in Christchurch last year. When they get it right on the day, beware!

  • I was really impressed by Reinach and how his game improved. Also our forwards. They played well as a unit. All.in all we got the bonus point and that is fantastic. The Bulls are hurting so we can not make as many mistakes as we made last night. SP needs to get his act together and think about his options.
See you guys at Loftus! !!

  • A very good performance from the Sharks in shocking conditions, those not there wouldnt understand how much water there was on the field etc. The Sharks with Bismarck are a totally different team, he is slowly coming into his own in terms of a leader. Giant made a difference to our scrums and around the fringes. But if anyone thinks they are fit etc just watch Marcel and PSDT play 80min and you will feel inferior! Their work rates and tackle counts are insane. Will be interesting to see how guys like Steyn, JP Pieterson etc slot in. Odwa’s old diesel engine def still worked in the rain.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 81) : When we have this debate it makes me very angry that Rory Kockert is playing in France
Once more we are looking at a flyhalf whose first duty is to kick for posts.
.Another Morne Steyn.Shit flyhalf good kicker.
With Kockert there we wouldn’t have this problem both at the Sharks or the Boks.
Best 10 we ever had was a very average kicker, the great Lem.

  • @The hound (Comment 82) : Well food for thought- we won 2 World Cups with not the greatest kicking 10s. Joel Stansky probably a bit better than Butch James off the tee but not by much. 2003, 2011 we had very kicking flyhalves…and how did that pan out?

  • @The hound (Comment 82) : I hear you and I do not think it was meant that way by JD, he is a sensible fella.

My point here though is also that no matter the kicker in those conditions you will struggle, one must also remember it also depends from area to area on the field, some area’s were wetter than other under foot.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 83) : Exactly, for me there should be more than 1 kicker for a team at any given time, all players have their off days off the tee, so again for me I also want a flyhalf that is versatile and controls the game with more than just the BOOT.

  • Other than giving some players a couple of minutes on the park just because I think the key substitutions were well managed. Tank and Deysel did good work on the park. Deysel played like a tight forward and got stuck into the rucks and mauls, some big hits as well – he took a liking to Howard Mnisi. The boys played damn well all in all, and managed the wet weather game superbly well. I’m not going criticize any player as those were horrendous conditions. Bismarck showed Marx who the real Bismarck was. Tight forwards were incredible and the loosies toiled hard. Some selection posers coming up with Deysel, Hoff and Alberts all wanting a shot at a start. Maybe Deysel will be a tight forward replacement?

A penalty liability as I was a fraction too slow to catch the flyhalf in possession, but too excited not to put my shoulder in… I loved club rugby and school rugby. And loved Sunday rugby against my mates who said I was a touch too competitive for them to have fun. I had aspirations of going all the way, but flip I was slow… And lazy, and thirsty, and distracted by girls, and thirsty, did I say thirsty?
