Clean bill of health for Sharks

Gary Gold seems to have been dealt a near perfect hand, with the news that his squad appears to have come through Saturday’s rout of the Lions pretty much unscathed.

Speaking to Rugby365 after the game, Gold quipped that he would far rather take four log points and no injuries over a bonus-point win that came with a few knocks to key players. On Saturday, he didn’t have to make that choice and got the best of both worlds.

Adding further to the Sharks’ selection options this weekend, it’s anticipated that Mouritz Botha and Willem Alberts could come into the frame ahead of the trip to Loftus for Round 3′s clash with the Bulls.

  • Excellent news! I am still buzzing from Saturday.. my word what a game we had. Our pack was trojans! Pat took charge like a general! So much goodness. Also, there has to be special mentions I feel to Giant, who I believe had a fantastic game as well as Chad, who stepped up tremendously come scrum time.
And then JPP, Frans, Kanko, Alberts and Botha to still join?? This day could only get better if my boss called me in to discuss my raise!

Hope I am wrong but ,it’s comments like this that rub me up the wrong way.
Sure its alright to think that, but when you analyse it it’s a loser’s statement.
There are 5 points on offer in every game, and you haven’t succeeded if you don’t get all 5.

When I analyse it it shows me that Gary is more concerned over player health than the scoreboard. That 1 point is not worth having a player in the squad sitting in the stands for x weeks. As far as I'm concerned this rubs me up the right way.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 13) : There were two really pleasing things to see this weekend:
    1. I was concerned to see the PSdT/Botha partnership broken up by injury…only to find out that the PSdT/Giant partnership is just as good! Giant had a good game (except one technically poor attempt to catch a lineout ball…that looks like an area in which he needs so coaching…his hands are in the wrong position when he tries to take the catch)…all in all he certainly justified the decision to keep him in the squad. Good stuff…(if only we’d captured the third Puma in Vincent Koch)
    2. I was really concerned about Beast being out…but that concern was alleviated by both Dale, who had a good game, and Thomas, who more that shored up a scrum that was just starting to take strain in the third quarter…
Great stuff…it’ll be interesting to see who gets to start if both Botha and Giant are fit for Saturday…

SP made some silly mistakes, but generally a good performance with commitment on defence.

  • Selection headaches for all the right reasons. PSDT will be looking to boss Victor, especially as he is in for negative press concerning his age and performance. RWC one step too far for the old warhorse? Very interested to see what team will be selected considering assets available. Deysel and Alberts have to be there and Bothma has been so good too. Does Tera deserve to be rotated as he hasn’t put a foot wrong. Are we going to see Coetzee. Deysel. Bothma with Alberts off the bench?

Pleasing to see everyone who is given a shot is playing good rugby. Really impressed with Odwa on the wing, despite his age, his experience and class shine through. What a player. Sithole needs to fight it out at 13. Odwa maybe to the back, with JPP at 14.

Seems like for the past 3 years these number have been trying very hard to emulate the road accident figures in the steep upward trend? Whats happening are the boys not eating their pap anymore? Why so soft?

  • @pastorshark (Comment 35) : Indeed, and the management team is big on player management and welfare, I’m intrigued to say the least as the Bothma/Deysel/Alberts thing could become a dichotomy. But in Brendan and Gary I trust. Might see Bothma at 8 with Deysel at 7 and Alberts on the bench against the Bulls with Botha on the bench and Giant retaining his spot.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 37) : exactly, my sentiments exactly, Deysel might feature at 6 when Marcell rests, as he is very competitive at the breakdown. I’ll be interested to see how Giant goes, with him and Botha rotating. Lewies might rotate with Steph, Gold reckons Giant is 130kgs, so the stats are a good 14kgs out. 1.99 meters and 130 Kilos. He adds some power at the Loosehead side in tight lock, can interchange and bind behind Jannie too if needs be. But with Deysel and Giant packing behind you – you’ll have a dominant scrum. Deysel’s position in the scrum is superb, adds a lot of power.

He may not be a vintage 15, but he ticks the boxes and offers consistent performances. Not wanting on defense, not wanting under the high ball, has a good right boot, has gas to hit the gap and a very good pass. A consistent Odwa, or an iffy SP?
