What they had to say…

What a great weekend by the Sharks. I’ve seldom seen a more composed display by a number 10 in wet weather, so hats off to Pat Lambie. In saying that, he couldn’t have played the way he did without our forwards putting in a massive effort to outclass the highly rated Lions side.

We all have our views, and as Sharks fans we tend to be biased towards our team, although we do get the Gloom Prophets who seem to relish in writing off ‘their team’. As such, I am going to trawl the net on a weekly basis and give you unbiased views out of South Africa, NZ and Australia (and wherever else I can find them) so that we can gauge the Sharks’ performance independently and get different views as to critical aspects of the game.

Here goes:

“that was more like it. A bonus point win on a wet track represented a vast improvement from an opening home loss to the Cheetahs. But it was against the pussycats from Jo’burg. Jury remains out till they beat someone a little more resembling a proper rugby team.” – stuff.co.nz

“A test of tactical nous in the wet, Springbok half-backs Cobus Reinach and Pat Lambie both showed real intelligence in their decision-making, a fine example being the build-up to Odwa Ndungane’s try.
Job done then for Gary Gold’s troops, as they bounced back from last week’s surprise defeat with an assured performance.” – Planetrugby.com

“Marcell Coetzee and the wet weather Sharks: Conditions were awful at Kings Park in Durban but the hosts played them perfectly against the Lions. Pat Lambie kicked well out of hand while tries for Odwa Ndungane, Cobus Reinach and two from Coetzee at the tail of the driving maul saw them pick up a bonus-point win. The result was much-needed after last week’s loss and to score four in that rain deserves applause.” – planetrugby.com

“The Lions made the stronger start in the driving rain and were rewarded with an early penalty when Coetzee was caught offside — the resulting penalty well-converted by Marnitz Boshoff, whose four goal kicks kept his side in the contest for most of the game. The Sharks, who appeared to be struggling more with the conditions, hit back by winning a scrum penalty in the eighth minute, which was slotted over by Lambie.” – superxv.com AND sport24.co.za

“Commenting on the past weekend’s matches, [Ollie] Le Roux said he was impressed with the Sharks’ bonus-point win against the Lions in difficult conditions. After failing to impose themselves against the Cheetahs in the first round, the Sharks rebounded with a dominant forward display in Durban. ‘Bismarck du Plessis made a massive difference, where he once again showed his class. The Sharks looked a much better unit with him in the front row. The Lions simply weren’t able to handle the weight of their pack. I was also impressed by the young guns – Dale Chadwick and Thomas du Toit. The injury to Beast Mtawarira might be a blessing in disguise, allowing those two the time to develop at Super Rugby level.’” – Ollie Le Roux to sarugbymag.co.za

“Apart from a 20-minute period where they let the Lions back into the match at the start of the second half, it was a very efficient performance from Gary Gold’s team on Saturday. The Sharks enjoyed a greater share of possession and territory in the first half courtesy of some accurate line-kicking and good set-piece work, before grinding out a bonus point in the second. The visitors were simply unable to get into the game and were pinned back by Pat Lambie and Cobus Reinach, whose contestable kicks allowed the Sharks to maintain the pressure and play the game in the right areas of the field.” – sarugbymag.co.za

Well that’s all I could find for now. I hope you guys enjoyed the article. Please let me know if you’d like me to carry on.

  • Hi Everyone,

Been following the posts on this site for years never really commented. And thought today was as good a time as ever.

To me this outing was a remarkable improvement to last week. And that’s positive as it shows a team that is growing. The Cheetahs game we were outplayed similar to how we outplayed the lions. And the secret ingredient is passion. The guys wanted to prove a point and they went about their business and did just that.

Early days but a lot of positive signs, I believe in Venter and Gary we have good level headed coaches that will take us forward

  • Wow that first reporter doesn’t rate the Lions at all. And from the local teams I would say the Lions rate at least a little higher than the cheetahs given recent form? Note I said recent form as in the year past and not in current form where cheetahs seem to look a little more structured.

  • I think as much as we couldnt read that much into last weeks loss vs the Cheetahs lets not get carried away with this win vs the Lions. The conditions were horrible and the Lions had a team to play running, dry weather rugby. The Sharks were just better suited to the conditions. Next week at Loftus will be a serious test

  • Yep, some good insights, the loss to the Cheetahs was a shock, but I trust we can gain some momentum and confidence and continue on some winning form. Game of small margins in Super Rugby. But 6 points from 2 games is starting to feel better.

Just bought my client a pack of dryers, biltong and 3 tickets – wish it was me going! But this one I want to watch on TV, I live for seeing the finer details of the game. If the Bulls lose another game, you might see Ludeke be in deep water… Matfield is also under pressure as he is like a coach on the field and not a physical presence. 3 on the trot and you could have a revolution at Fortress Blou Bal.
