Carr and Mbonambi start for the Stormers

The Stormers have made 2 changes to their match day squad to take on the Lions in Joburg on Saturday

Ex Bulls hooker Bongani Mbonambi gets handed his first start for his new team in rotational switch with Scarra Ntubeni while Nizaam Carr comes in for the Rhynard Elstadt who broke his tibula in last weeks home fixture against the Blues. The Stormers pack will certainly miss the grunt that the lock cum flank provided but Carr’s inclusion does give the loose trio a much more balanced feel to it.

Allister Coetzee has opted to make no changes to his backline instead allowing for the group to develop a build on some decent early season form, Coetzee will be looking at Demitri Catrakilis to have a firm grip on the game and be accurate with his tactical kicking as a miscued kick could play into the hands of a Lions team who love nothing more than a good counter attack. The relative inexperience of the Stormers back three will also be tested in the Highveld, Cheslyn Kolbe particularly looked to have some difficulty handling the Blues kicking game last week.

Meanwhile on the bench the Stormers welcome back tighthead prop Frans Malherbe and Pumas lock Manual Carizza from their respective injury concerns, Eben Etzebeth is reportadly still another week away from fitness and Schalk Burger will only join the squad next week.

Stormers: 15 Cheslin Kolbe, 14 Johnny Kotze, 13 Juan de Jongh, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Dillyn Leyds, 10 Demetri Catrakilis, 9 Nic Groom, 8 Duane Vermeulen (captain), 7 Michael Rhodes, 6 Nizaam Carr, 5 Ruan Botha, 4 Jurie van Vuuren, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Steven Kitshoff.
Replacements: 16 Siyabonga Ntubeni, 17 Oliver Kebble, 18 Frans Malherbe, 19 Manuel Carizza, 20 Siya Kolisi, 21 Louis Schreuder, 22 Kurt Coleman, 23 Huw Jones

  • @Ben (Comment 8) : And he probably won’t need to be rested for the Boks because he is invisible to Heyneke.

  • Very good Stormers side. That back 3 can damage any lapses and the pack is a tough bunch of guys.
