What they had to say: Bulls vs Sharks Round 3

What a game! I know the Sharks lost, and the ref did make some dubious calls, but it was a no-holds-barred game with plenty of action and heart from both teams.

For this week’s article I am going to break the information by country of origin and I’ll select some tweets to let you know what the man in the street thought about the game. These I found particularly interesting. Please note that the tweets will remain anonymous for obvious reasons.

South Africa:

“The Bulls have won 43 – 35 but not without some controversy on two of their tries.“ Sport24.com

“For the first time this season the Bulls finally performed to their potential as their forwards fronted up against a decent opponent.…A minute later the Bulls scored a controversial try thanks to a Jesse Kriel line break that led to wing Francois Hougaard scoring in the left-hand corner. The decision was referred to Television Match Official Johan Greeff to look at the offload from Kriel to Hougaard. While it appeared to be a forward pass, Greeff awarded the try, with Pollard converting the try to stretch their lead to nine points.” Sport24.com

“The pressure was on and the Bulls delivered, despite a late rally from the visitors. After two successive home losses, a positive result on Saturday was imperative. The Bulls were patient in their buildup play and accurate in their execution, making for a frustrating afternoon for the Sharks. Gary Gold’s side may have reason to feel aggrieved by one or two decisions from referee Jaco van Heerden and the TMO, but their discipline and defence around the rucks let them down in the end.” sarugbymag.co.za

“Bulls captain Pierre Spies has admitted that the Referee Jaco van Heerden’s 50/50 calls went their way in their 43-35 Super Rugby victory over the Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday.” Superxv.com

“The Bulls put their Super Rugby campaign back on track with the kind of performance that would make other teams sit up and take note. Although they were made to work for their 43-35 bonus-point victory over the Sharks in their Super Rugby encounter in Pretoria at the weekend, they believed they had the potential to do just that. With only three scrums throughout the entire match, Bulls coach Frans Ludeke hailed the quality of the rugby dished up.” rugby365.com

New Zealand:

“8 Sharks (last week #7)
A high-scoring defeat at Loftus to the Bulls is no disgrace, but a definite backward step for a side that had rumbled into some form in week two. Jury still out on whether a pretender or contender.” stuff.co.nz

“Apart from passionate forward exchanges and six tries, spectators were treated to flawless goal-kicking by Bulls fly-half Handre Pollard and opposite number Lambie with neither missing a shot at the posts.” tvnz.co.nz

“The Sharks had No 8 Ryan Kankowski and scrumhalf Cobus Reinach cross the line, but were only briefly in front in a game where they trailed 23-16 at halftime.” superrugby.co.nz

Australia:

“While the Bulls celebrated a first triumph of the season and a four-try bonus point, Sharks got nothing from a spectacle to which they contributed so much.” Smh.com.au

“What a game high scoring and high skilled, if you wanted an exhibition of rugby that was it, hard hitting and no nonsense. Scrums were clean and over with quickly. Pollard and Lambie were superb with their kicking with both finishing the game with a perfect record, Kriel and Marais were good in the first half but didn’t get involved in the second half. Labuschagne got through a mountain of work, two questionable tries to the Bulls may have the Sharks feeling a little funny about this game in one they probably should’ve won, but that’s Rugby and sometimes it doesn’t go your way.” theroar.com.au

International:

“Jesse Kriel’s pass for Francois Hougaard’s try was adjudged to be legal by the officials, despite a suggestion it went forward, while Odwa Ndungane’s knock-on ruled out a try for SP Marais. When looking at the number of penalties they conceded, the Sharks may also feel that the referee could have been too harsh in his adjudication at the breakdowns and scrums…The Bulls were first to get over the whitewash when Francois Hougaard finished out wide after a break from Jesse Kriel. Controversially, the TMO rubber-stamped the score despite what appeared to a clear forward pass from the Bulls full-back.” Planetrugby.com

“After home losses to the Stormers and Hurricanes, the Bulls were looking good in Pretoria as they twice built 11-point second-half advantages. But the Durban-based Sharks refused to surrender at Loftus Versfeld stadium and snatched a two-point lead when Patrick Lambiegoaled his seventh penalty seven minutes from time.” espnscrum.com

“Prior to Jan Serfontein’s try it was still anyone’s game as the Bulls clung to a one-point advantage they were afforded after replacement pivot Tian Schoeman slotted a penalty just minutes after his team were overtaken on the scoreboard by a resurgent Sharks outfit.” Sanzarrugby.com

Twitter:

“If you’re a Sharks supporter, we hope you had a full beer to wash down that ref display yesterday #SharksRugby #S15”

“Which blind ref was in charge of the #SharksRugby this afternoon and the tmo was also pathetic to call them officials is a disgrace”

“”@TheSharksZA: … Pipped at the death… http://bit.ly/1Dm5bL5 #SharksRugby” You call that “pipped?” That was a comprehensive beating!!!!!”

“Pathetic officiating in Bulls vs Sharks game. What are you going to do about it? @SuperRugby @bokrugby #SSRugby #SuperRugby #SharksRugby”

“Believe me when I tell you that I detest #sharksrugby more than then next person, but the #Sharks have been done over by that ref & tmo”

“Unlucky @TheSharksZA. What a @super_rugby game. Definitely a game between the two best SA SuperRugby sides #BULvSHA #SharksRugby #SuperRugby”

“#SharksRugby terrible show of refereeing in South Africa today. We are better than this.”

  • Thanks. It helps.

I hate it when we complain about a bad ref and people put it down to sour grapes. If it were sour grapes, then wouldn’t we do it after every loss? And do we do it after every loss?

It’s not like we don’t complain about the ref after a win, it’s just that it obviously did not have enough of an effect to impact the result – against us. ;-)

  • Bulls drive, shark enters from side REF: advantage!
another player enters from side REF: new advantage!
3rd player enters REF: new advantage!

10 minutes later sharks are driving it up. Jaques du Plessis enters from side REF: nr4! Get out of there!

I saw that too, but didn’t want to make too much of an issue of it, because I was really angry by the time it happened and thought, maybe I’m influenced by my emotions.

I hope, at the very least, we get some answers about the poor officiating in this game.

The referee association usually tries to support their refs on field decisions, accept if they feel it was a howler.

Lets see if there is any reaction.

  • Stevie great article once again and great layout.if we are going to play blame the Ref then I have said it beore and you can go back in history and check how many games the Bullarinas have won at LaLa Land, the close games, through dodgy sometimes blatant rubbish from the Refs

  • @Letgo (Comment 3) : Yeah, what irks me though is with all the technology we have and replays etc ect.. there are still so many questionable calls made? So easy to shout “the ref! the bloody ref!” at the end of a game when you have lost, but when the ref did have a nightmare like he did against us, what then? :???:

  • @benji (Comment 6) : Thanks benji.

I prefer not to comment on the ref. My blood was boiling on Saturday. I can take losing if the other team is better (although it still hurts), but the fact that the TMO can be so useless with all the technology available…!

@Another Nick (Comment 8) : I’m still waiting for that answer.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 4) : Kaplan questioned some of the decisions on Twitter during the game. In particular, the two early penalty calls that were wrong.

  • @StevieS (Comment 10) : Yea, I also saw that tweet. Along with many others that questioned the ref. But again, its just the rugby public and community that questions and complains when a ref is bad. But nothing is actually being done about it. And that, to me, is the worst.

  • @Another Nick (Comment 12) : I couldn’t agree more. I know the ref will make some mistakes, but when you use technology and still get it wrong then there have to be answers and penalties.

I heard today Monday 2 Feb – from a very reliable source – the TMO is on the Bulls’ payroll!!!!! Now we know ! ! ! How many more are on the B’s payroll. Smart cheating!!! that’s how they always get away with murder. It takes away from the fact that they actually played quite well at times!
