The boys are back

Some good news for beleaguered Sharks fans; Saturday’s team to restore pride at Newlands should feature the return of up to four key Springboks.

A big response is needed after a bad result at Loftus and for the Sharks, the immediate priority must be getting properly back on the horse and starting to climb the log in earnest. While the need for rotation and sensible player management remains, you also feel that the management team needs to start looking at a strongest available selection for the next few rounds, just to get momentum up.

Frans Steyn, JP Pietersen, Willem Alberts and maybe even Beast Mtawarira should all come very strongly into the selection frame this week as the Sharks make an all-out assault on Fortress Newlands. If that thought doesn’t give you cause for confidence – nay, even goosebumps – on this Tuesday morning than I guess nothing will!

    11. Mvovo

  • @Ben (Comment 6) : Bothma and Marcell are due for a rest soon so maybe one of them.

Bismarck and Jannie are also coming up for mandatory rest time so maybe them this weekend and Marcell next weekend.

Or maybe even Pat to have a rest.

I don’t like the idea of resting all of our contracted Boks in one go. I’d rather see it split up so that we still have some X-Factor on the park in every match.

  • @Ben (Comment 8) : I know Claasens is still a bit of an unknown quantity to us, but I believe we need an experienced 9 that will do the basics right. A 9 that will always be solid. I believe he will give us this.

Cobus on the other hand is like a box of smarties. You never know which colour you will get next. He does some things that are excellent and then he does other things that are just horrible.

  • @Ben (Comment 11) : The problem is that he rarely creates anything for players around him. All his brilliant moments seem to be solo efforts. Compare that to young Rudy Paige, who created two tries and did all the rest of the basics well, besides the one error.

  • Best combination in my view would be the following:
    9. Cobus Reinach
    10. Pat Lambie
    11. Lwazi Mvovo
    12. Francois Steyn
    13. JP Pietersen
    14. Paul Perez
    15. Jack Wilson

    Bench between
    9. Conrad Hoffman
    10. Lionel Cronje
    11. Sbura Sithole
    12. Andre Esterhuizen
    13. Waylon Murray
    14. Tonderai Chavhanga
    15. SP Marais

    Or

    9. Stefan Ungerer
    10. Fred Zeilinga
    11. Odwa Ndungane
    12. Heimar Williams
    13. Paul Jordaan
    14. Sizo Maseka
    15. Jaco Van Tonder

    Still leaving out
    Michael Claasens
    Cameron Wright
    Hanco Venter

    - Frans at inside centre

    - Alberts at flank to replace Deysel

  • It doesnt matter which personnel we employ…unless the Sharks can be more deceptive and vary their attack well organised defenses will take us to the cleaners. The Sharks are known for defensive lapses so we arent gonna win too many games 6-0. Some variety between playing forward runners and playing it behind them to the backline is whats needed or hate to say it but the Stormers defense will pick off our 1 off runners with ease

  • @tigershark (Comment 32) : That was a result of unstructured play off a turn over. And yes we do have some interplay and offloads but its def the minority. I am more refferring to structured play when we keep the ball for any decent length of time…we resort to type and one off forward runners with the backline either standing and watching or forced to clean rucks when forwards are isolated. So its not so much interplay but rather mixing it up between pods of forwards and then passing behind them to the backs…then forwards again etc

Can still partly agree on the Bulls game, but eve there apart fro the much maligned decisions, the Sharks never looked like beating the Bulls.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 36) : Frans is more of a presence than a creative force on the field. Willie le Roux raises a team while Frans grounds a team (not in a negative sense). You need both types in my opinion. Difficult to quantify what he brings but he add an extra dimension to the Sharks nonetheless.
