Beaten by a better team

Gary Gold’s assessment of Saturday’s result at Newlands is certainly an apt one, but I can’t help thinking that it’s a question of emphasis on one specific word.

The Sharks, on Saturday, were beaten by a better team. This is not the same as being beaten by a better team, although I concede that the distinction is subtle (and probably won’t leave any of us feeling any better in any event). Gold was quick to agree that his squad, boasting 11 Springboks (or whatever) and five Super Rugby centurions in the starting line up under performed on Saturday, but added that simply having that number of top players in your line up does not guarantee success in a game of rugby.

If anything, maintains Gold, the strength of your side on paper often serves more to motivate the opposition than it does to aid you in any way.

That, I think, puts to bed the prospect that the Stormers, man for man, are necessarily any better as individual rugby players than the Sharks are, but there can be very little doubt that from a unity, cohesion and simply “being on the same flipping page” point of view, Allister Coetzee’s men were streets ahead. Gold spoke about “soft moments” costing his side – Lwazi Mvovo allowing a ball to bounce, Cobus Reinach and Odwa Ndgunane losing their heads in-goal to concede a penalty try and also numerous fumbles and silly mistakes on attack – all of which are the hallmark of a team that hasn’t quite learned to back each other and the system and tends to fall back on individualism when the chips are down.

It’s rather ironic – although again not at all comforting – that the Stormers themselves seemed to be in exactly the same position less than a year ago. They endured a torrid Super Rugby campaign, only to regroup and reform as a team during last year’s Currie Cup. Right now, they are playing as a tight-knit, cohesive unit and it’s that kind of dynamic that allowed them to withstand some furious Sharks pressure in the first half, regroup and come out to dominate the game in the second. They didn’t need to rely on any stars to pull off any moments of magic in the game and if anything, those few really big names on their team sheet (bar the irrepressible Duane Vermeulen) were arguably not among the chief architects of the win.

For the Sharks to turn things around, teamwork simply has be at the heart of everything they do, teamwork, trust and belief – in each other and in the system. Gold’s assessment of how to move forward is simple “we have to start by not panicking and by not stabbing each other in the back” and I hope he’s successful in promulgating that message. The answer here does not lie in making never-ending tweaks to the squad until only “big name” players remain; rather the opposite.

We need every player to check their name and reputation at the change room door.

  • Rob I think you have it spot on about the Stormers having a great team environment.

We always hear players chat about how great and welcoming the team has been to newbies and its all usually just a nice standard response from all players anywhere but I remember just before the Stormers vs Lions kickoff how Duane Vermuelen who probably had a million things on his mind ran over to Bongani Mbonambi to give him a bear hug and word of encouragement on his first Stormers start.

That sort of stuck with me in that it just showed that everyones achievements are important in the team whether on 99 caps or just 13.

Bismarck is simply not captain material. He cant keep his cool.

Frans Steyn played with half a team most of last year and was most of the time the only thing between us and defeat in fact I count many many games where he was the biggest points contributor of the match. Thanks but I think experienced rugby minds will not be taking your advice.
@Letgo bad with the ref? I watched Matfield and I don’t think Bissie does much more haggling/bickering than Matfield did? He is just very intense and with some of the past ref performances I don’t think he can be blamed too much.

Bismarck didn’t lose his cool in this game though, did he?

Your opinion of Frans Steyn is made up with very little background. You don’t like the player based on what you believe his attitude is, but can you really, with certainty confirm that he has a bad attitude. It’s a very personal thing to decide based on one thing that happened, of which there was very little detail.

I can’t see that he did anything wrong on Saturday. The first instance against him was ridiculous. Kolby moved into him, Frans’s movement was up and down only. The second instance even the refs agreed was a fair hard tackle and the last instance, was a little late, but a perfect hard tackle.

  • Some classic comments here, and some valid points, both made in comments and in the article.

    Cohesion.
    Trust.
    Team Work.

We are not yet a team, not in the truest sense, and we may be falling apart as individuals. Leadership needs to step up, or we can have a sequel to the American classic “Any Given Sunday” – clash of the egos is not going to take us forward, check your name at the door, indeed.

We need to have a simple concise plan, and we need to bleed for each other. We can’t have yet another nearly season.

My problem with Bismarck is not how he handles the ref, but how he manages his players on the field. Do they trust their leader?

    Much contemplation.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 24) :

Bissie has always been a passionate player and it is what made him one of the best hookers in the world for years. His passion is a massive part of his game, this is partly why I agree that he should not be captain, because he doesn’t seem to be able to balance the two, temper his passion when he talks with the ref and go full out when he carries the ball. As captain, he sometimes seems to laid back on the field and if he does get some of that passion back, he seems to take it out on the refs (who sometimes deserves it, but will never react well to a ranting captain).

Lambie, Marcell Coetzee, Kankowski are my captain nominations.

As far as Frans Steyn’s attitude goes, you talk about his Bok contract issues and I seriously don’t believe that, that was an attitude thing. Your assumption that it was an attitude thing has absolutely no evidence to support it. Everything I’ve read afterwards showed that it was an extremely difficult decision to make for Steyn, but he felt he should withdraw as his heart would not be in it, while these issues were ongoing. He was very disappointing with way his contract was handled and felt that he would not be an asset to the Boks while there was friction with his contract negotiations. He said he felt the Boks had good young players who were eager to prove themselves in his position and that he would not have felt right to take their places while this thing was on his mind. His disputes was also never with HM, Meyer never came near it, it was with the financial department.

He said it was very hard for him and that it started at the beginning of last year. He delayed talks till the inbound tours, as he felt he wouldn’t be able to do his best for the Sharks if he was distracted by financial issues.

De Jong ran into JP, late tackle, yes, but tell me how JP was supposed to pull out of it? Back away? I accept the penalty, but understand the argument.

He asked Peyper the question. Is there offside in the in-goal? There is no offside in the in goal, is there?

    What a horrible attitude!!

Oh and the sarcastic clap. Can you maybe think why he did it? Tell me this, do you think Steyn would have been carded in a home game? The crowd went crazy every time Steyn made a big tackle. Since the legality of every tackle he made was questioned, although he was cleared of every previous instance, the ref carded him. The clap for the crowed, well deserved. I haven’t heard a South African player (Springbok at that, so passionately booed, in a very long time). Very disrespectful. I did not like that at all.

I can guarantee that in weeks to come, both these players will be star performers for us. Will you be man enough to come back and admit that you were wrong, or at least that your comments are solely based on your personal feelings for both players.

All Sharks players are my favorite, if they are not up to scrap, they need to be benched.

SP even before he came, was one of my favorites. It is clear however that he is struggling, and at best is scraping by as a solid player. I would love to see another player being given a chance.

JPP at 13 has potential, but usually it doesn’t work out. I’d play Sithole or even Murray. JPP was out of position on defense.

Steyn did not have a good game. He looked out of place. He needs to perform better in the next game, but knowing his quality, I believe he will.

I like the way Bissie manages a game and his team as captain, I like his decision making, but I feel we need to give him a spokesman. Ryan Kankowski, I think will be much better with the refs.

Bissie’s English is not that great, and I think sometimes this also doesn’t help, since captains always communicate with refs in English these days and Bissie seems to be having a hard time to get his thoughts across to the ref, which frustrates him even more. Kanko, I think, would be more diplomatic.

Though, I don’t think these changes would make much of a difference to how we play next week.

Or would it just give you pleasure that these two players were sacked.

  • @Letgo (Comment 58) : 2 players newly graduated from lower leagues vs 2 springbok world ranked players. Also Kyle Cooper vs Bissie (who is probably one of the if not the highest rated Hooker in the world)? First he had a problem with Bissie as captain now Bissie as hooker? Maybe he just has a problem with Bissie and Frans, period. Like you said. Some well disguised provincialism and sore feelings about how his ballerinas were treated? I smell a hidden agenda or complete lack of rugby knowledge.

Peyper (also a small guy, #justsaying) must have felt sorry for the little guy seeing that they both share the same mindset that smaller players shouldn’t be tackled hard.

If you think these are the guys that are going to take your side places, then thats great. I dont share that opinion and I’ll be gutted to see either in Bok colours. I could sort of live with Bismarck, because in the Bok pack he’s scared of Eben. But i personally hope Steyn never resolves his issues with HM.

  • Rob, truth be told? yes we were beaten by the better team on the day.

This is the team barring injuries and of course we do not know who will be rotated that I would like to see come Saturday.

    15 SP
    14 JpP
    13 Sbura
    12 Steyn
    11 Mvovo
10 Lambie ( I hear Pat may be rotated this coming weekend)
    09 Reinach
    08 Bothma
    07 Alberts
    06 Marcell
    05 PSDT
    04 Botha/Giant
    03 Jannie
    02 Bismark
    01 Tank

    15 Cooper
    17 Beast
    18 Adriaanse
    19 Giant/Botha
    20 Kanko
    21 Ungerer
    22 Esterhuizen
    23 Wilson/Odwa

If Lambie is rested then surely time for Fred to get a shot at pivot?

Also hope Sbura is ready to take the 13 spot.

  • I love JP – he’s my favourite player, but the guy isn’t a 13. If it’s not obvious to people by now then I don’t know what it’ll take to…

I don’t care where he plays in Japan or where he wants to be played. He’s on of the best defensive wingers in the game and very good under the high ball but his positioning and reading of the game at 13 isn’t up to scratch.

After Saturday’s display Reinach can ride the pine this weekend.

    Mat Stevens please go home.

I’ll drop Odwa as well. I’m not comfortable rewarding a player with another start if said player doesn’t know to that when under severe pressure you don’t clown around in-goal. You jot it down – end of. Thanks for slowly running into that one gap old man but it’s not good enough when you do shit like this.

I’m picking on players and that’s not good but I’m pissed and someone’s got to pay…

  • The funny thing is that the same people crying about Frans’ physicality on Kolbe, then turn around criticizing him saying de Allende man-handled him and he lost the physical battle? Really so which would you like Frans to be? Too physical or not physical enough? I say most people moan about him because they KNOW what he is capable of. If I were a lesser man I would hate Duane Vermeulen for exactly the same reason. Except I don’t I admire him for being great. You be yourself Frans, and if they don’t like being tackled they should either be faster or move out of the way. As for de Allende who has been playing with this same team for how many matches now to Frans Steyn who has to come back from Japan adjust to a different style AND a different team in 1 match…yeah sure you are definetely comparing apples with apples. NOT. Steyn will adjust and so will the boys. Hungry sharks are MOST dangerous.

JPP and Mvovo on wings. But then even as I type this I think to myself, what does it matter? How much ball did they see how many effective backline moves were there? I keep coming back to Reinach’s lack of distribution and vision, I really like Cobus but this style he is playing will not work for him. One very last point ball handling was atrocious I really hope we can get this sorted out otherwise we are sunk.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 129) : @Ben (Comment 131) : sorry to say but Steyn and JPP should not have started last week. The problem for me is the Sharks has to many individual super stars that’s not gelling as a team. Starting “new” players so soon after arriving also does not help.

    I think you’re getting it.

Most players feel so much honored by their inclusion in the Springbok squad that they accept the remuneration on offer without additional demands.

Frans Steyn is obviously different, which makes it very unlikely that he will act within the framework of Rob’s article. GG will have to figure out how to build a team that includes a big ego or two.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 135) : your last sentence is interesting, but I’m not sure that GG’s challenge in this respect is unique among coaches.
