Cheetahs turn the tables

There’s an old joke doing the rounds that when the Sharks play in Bloemfontein, many of the players stay at their parents’ houses rather than checking into a hotel. This weekend, they may just find that those old rooms have been sub-let to their own former team mates. Times are tough in Bloem, after all.

The Sharks will most likely boast a few “Old Greys” in their side this weekend, with the du Plessis brothers and Frans Steyn expected to line up as usual; in a rather ironic twist, though the Cheetahs have included no fewer than five former Sharks players in their own match 23 this week. Danie Mienie, who earned a cap or two at Super Rugby level for the Sharks before moving to Griquas this year, starts at loosehead prop, while Steven Sykes (included on the Cheetahs bench) is a Sharks veteran of 50+ Super Rugby games. Willie du Plessis, Tian Meyer and Maks van Dyk all earned their spurs playing age-group rugby for the Sharks and will sit alongside Sykes on the bench. Meyer came the closest to a Sharks Super Rugby cap of those three, benching on four separate occasions without making it onto the park.

Oupa Mohoje moves out of the team this week (he’s being rested), opening the door for Tienie Burger to start for the first time. Boom Prinsloo shifts from 6 to 8, with Jean Cook moving to blindside. Among the backs, Sarel Pretorius is fit again and takes over from Meyer at scrumhalf, while Frans Venter moves to 12 in place of Mike van der Spuy, allowing Johann Sadie to start at 13. Heinrich Brussow has been selected no the bench this week, along with Clayton Blommetjies.

Cheetahs: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cornal Hendricks, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Boom Prinsloo, 7 Jean Cook, 6 Tienie burger, 5 Francois Uys (capt), 4 Carl Wegner, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld, 1 Danie Mienie
Subs: 16 BG Uys, 17 Stephan Coetzee, 18 Maks van Dyk, 19 Heinrich Brussow, 20 Steven Sykes, 21 Tian Meyer, 22 Willie du Plessis, 23 Clayton Blommetjies

  • Dangerous backline that could cause serious damaged to our more capped players if we don’t come out with a better attitude and discipline on Sat. Our forwards should be able to man up well though IF Jannie and Beast are back.

  • Interesting situation we find ourselves in now. Should we rest all our Bok players (the ones that have to be rested by next week) this week against the Cheetahs and play them all against the Chiefs or the other way round? If we choose the former, we will have a week team against the Cheetahs, which will increase our chances of losing and then we might end up losing to the Chiefs with our strong team anyway. Whilst with the latter option, we could choose the strongest team for the Cheetahs and increase our chances of a big win but then we will probably get a bit of a hiding against the Chiefs. Let’s keep in mind that the game against the Cheetahs is an away game and the game against the Chiefs is a home game.

  • @Another Nick (Comment 24) : or just sheer elation, if he forgets to kick most of the time. Seriously why only in south africa do our scrumhalfs think it a good idea to swop a ball in hand for a pressured kick upfield that will 9 out of 10 times end up in your opponents hands, put immediate defensive pressure on your forwards and place your teammates in an offside position more often than not before they can capitalize on attack? Can Anyone explain this. And then you do this right after your teammates have fought tooth and nail to make 15 metres by bashing their skulls out against the opposition? Really please explain how you do this EVEN when you are busy going forward, not even in an emergency situation, but busy going…..F-O-R-W-A-R-D…I feel I need to spell this and maybe explain the concept to our scrummies (not just Reinach)

Lambie – how can we rest this guy? Fred still not ready and no-one else really up to it unless Steyn goes FH and Sithole Esterhuizen can pair on center? JPP just came back so doesn’t have to be rested. Mvovo gets rest and Ndugane/Wilson/Perez/Chavanga fills in. PSDT – Wentzel and Botha or Botha and Mtyanda Mtyanda and Wentzel? Willie Alberts – just came back so he doesn’t have to be rested right? Cobus Reinach – very interesting one who would you pick to replace him? I would also love to say Ungerer but is he ready?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 58) : Bud with respect, that will be as exciting as watching grass grow in the Namib desert. France is even less a FH than a centre. But I guess if you want to play steamroller rugby and try and run over every defender then that backbone is a sure bet.

You can play that backbone, I reckon guys like Rhule, Hendricks, Willie, and Sarel will have a field day. Sale will run circles round Fransie, and probably through his legs too.

  • @robdylan (Comment 70) : Cronje played youth rugby for Free State (not to say he’ll be in the squad). Adriaanse is just as much a former Griqua who became a Shark as Danie Mienie is a former Sharks who became a Griqua. Marco Wentzel has also played for the Cheetahs. Sure, I guess I’ll concede that these players aren’t all born Cheetahs, but they have worn the colours. ;-)

  • It’s only the Cheetahs chaps, we normally beat them in our sleep. I’m expecting a motivated Sharks team to do exactly that. After all, anything the Bulls do the Sharks can do better.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 94) : thanks bud.

I’ll wish you guys luck too, but I don’t mean it. And that’s not attempting to be mean-spirited or nasty – or really anything other than plain honest.

Just that, from a Sharks perspective, we absolutely absolutely non-negotiably HAVE to get a win this weekend.
