Big guns for Bloem

Jannie du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira are expected to be restored to the Sharks’ front row for Saturday’s must-win clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Du Plessis missed out on the disastrous defeat at Newlands last week due to a combination of paternity duties (wife Ronel gave birth to their second daughter last Friday) and mandatory rest at the behest of SARU, while Mtawarira has been out of action since injuring his calf in the first-round loss to Naka Drotske’s side. With the Sharks scrum coming decisively second in the Cape, you can understand the coaches’ desire to reunite their Bok front row, even if that in itself is not guaranteed to fix the problem.

Du Plessis himself has been at pains this week to point out how scrumming is a full-pack effort and that the props are only one of a number of factors that come into play when determining the outcome. Looking at the Sharks pack that took such strain last weekend, it doesn’t differ substantially personnel-wise from the unit that dominated the Lions at scrum time just a few weeks before, apart from the props. Concern has been raised regarding the form of Matt Stevens, though, with many pundits questioning whether his current level of conditioning is acceptable for a Super Rugby player.

The task of trying to figure out just how to win scrums without du Plessis on the field is one that the Sharks will need to address in pretty short order. For Saturday, though, with a win simply not negotiable, the big Doctor looks set to play a key role and that, I’m sure, will make fans sleep just that little bit more easily.

In other prop-related news, Mike Greenaway writes in The Star that Dale Chadwick appeared to break a finger at practice on Monday. We await confirmation from the union.

  • Glad to see Jannie confirming the teamwork factor, and how they weren’t focused on team work but rather individuals.

You know it was an honest team talk when that type of information hits the news stands.

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 4) : If I have to choose between two evils I will rather have a tighthead that can at least hold up the scrum than one than that can run and tackle all over the field. The same with a hooker than cannot hit his jumpers and get scrummed to bits.

  • Now we all know that there are numerous issues caused by the constant changing of coaches, game plans, and the general philosophies that come with that that all the players need to adjust to. But there is another contributing factor that hasn’t been raised much in that it’s a RWC year. There are a number of players on the fringe and desperate to impress. I know this affects all teams. subconsciously some players will be in survival don’t-get-injured mode and others in gotta-showcase-my-skills mode.
Speaking of which anyone else get the feeling that the Blues and Saders (who are also failing to produce wins despite the quality in the team) have most of their players in survival mode?

Go and have a look at how few of his tackles turn play into a phase and how many of his missed tackles are crucial ones, where the opposition scores.

I like Adriaanse and definitely agree he should be played ahead of Stevens, but I do feel that he gets a little out-muscled in the scrums. Maybe he should go on a very rigourous strength training course, he could use some hard muscle.

  • @Ben (Comment 17) : And his current defense stats aside, his previous record shows less sterling defense, also a great tendency to give penalties away. A good example is the tackle he should have made against the bulls right in front of the posts he moved toward the SH saw the ball leave his hand and STILL committed to the tackle. The result was that there was no defender and try slipped through, and even if there was no try it would have been a penalty for an abviously late tackle. He has some good points but he also has some glaringly bad points, things that you would have thought he would have adressed in his loooonnng tenure, but its been there since his freestate days and are still there.

Unlike two of the other big banner signings,Botha and Deysel, who both arrived made a guest appearance and went straight into very expensive rehab.
In the Top Soccer Leagues no one, no matter how good is signed until he has had an extensive medical.
Ever since I was party to Chris Gayle arriving at the Dolphins, playing half a game and going straight into surgery followed by an extensive paid for rehab and then going home,I have been quite sceptical about this kind of thing.

  • Matt Stevens does not look ready for this….he should be a much bigger force. ..and he looks like he just isnt hungry for it anymore. The rest just need time to gel…i dont care about the title this year…just want them to really gel and the 2nd half of the season will be great and also great for the boks

  • @Ben (Comment 77) : If you ever change your mind and decide to read, read this series of books.
They are probably the best I ever read, but then I did grow up without T.V. and had to make up my own pictures in my head. What I truly love about this series is that when they did make the pictures they were even better than the ones I made up in my head.

  • @The hound (Comment 79) : I did find the plot in one of the books (number 4 I think) a bit long-winded and not as good as the rest.

Have to say though even having read all the available books and knowing some of the spoilers ahead of time, the series never disappoints either.
