Four internationals strengthen Sharks

Gary Gold has made four changes to his starting pack for Saturday’s key clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, with a quartet of test-hardened forwards brought in to shore up the pack that creaked badly against the Stormers at Newlands.

Beast Mtawarira is back from injury and replaces Thomas du Toit at loosehead prop, while on the tighthead side, Jannie du Plessis takes over from Matt Stevens. In the second row, English international Mouritz Botha is also back, after picking up an eye-socket injury in the first round. He replaces Giant Mtayanda in the number 4 shirt.

The final change sees Namibian test player Renaldo Bothma take over from Willem Alberts at blindside flank; Alberts’ comeback after injury unfortunately only lasted 50 minutes and he’s out again this week with a fresh complaint.

The backline remains unchanged, with SP Marais thus the only player in the starting fifteen yet to taste international rugby. Gold has been at pains to point out that the number of Springboks in your team does not necessarily translate to on-field success, but will hope that this team, featuring 12 South African test players along with the two foreign internationals, will stand up and prove him wrong.

On the bench, Dale Chadwick (who is thought be suffering from a finger injury) has been bracketed with du Toit, while Giant Mtayanda is bracketed with Marco Wentzel. Tera Mtembu makes welcome return to the match 23 and will play off the bench.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Pat Lambie, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Renaldo Bothma, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Mouritz Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis (capt), 1 Tendai Mtawarira
Subs: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Dale Chadwick/Thomas du Toit, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Marco Wentzel/Lubabalo Mtyanda, 20 Tera Mtembu, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Andre Esterhuizen, 23 Jack Wilson

  • Great team, now they just have to perform!

One question: The Boks may only play 5 games in a row right? So next weekend we’ll have to rest Bismarck, PSDT?, Coetzee, Reinach, Lambie and Mvovo? Against the Chiefs? The coaches might have been a teeeny bit shortsighted if this is the case…

  • @PTAShark (Comment 2) : I assume Frans will deputize at 10 against the Chiefs then, as Fred will not have had enough game time to start against the Chiefs.

Bismarck can play – as he missed the first game.

I don’t think PSDT counts as a key Bok – he does not have a Bok contract and also did not play for the Boks last year.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 2) : Bismarck didn’t play the 1st game so he can still play next week.

Mvovo, PSDT and Reinach aren’t contracted Boks so I’m not sure what the SARU regulations says about them?

  • @Pokkel (Comment 6) : Well I feel Mvovo should play, he’s fringe unfortunately. Pretty sure Reinach should be seen as key, so he should be out. Should be fun to see next week’s team! And yes, I did forget that Bissie missed the first game.

  • I think the coaches etc need a win here hence the strongest possible team selected.
Only key Boks need t be rested so in my book that means only Lambie and Coetzee next week. Bismarck missed first game so can play, Jannie/Beast been rested already. PSDT not a contracted Bok and didnt play whole of last year. The Sharks have a great team on paper…but rugby is played on grass and at the moment we dont look to hot on the grass so time will tell.

  • This ‘team’ needs to man up this week and commit themselves to 80min of playing with, and for, each other. We especially need those who are more experienced to step up and lead by example.

Really unfortunate for Alberts, but nice to have the starting front row back as well as Botha who really impressed in the few outings he had

  • @SheldonK (Comment 10) : Don’t you think even though Lambie is a key member of the Bok sqaud HM would like him to have more mins on the pitch? Same goes with Pollard as they didn’t play alot last year until the Int which sometimes hampers decision making which is key for a 10.

MC resting will be a challenge to combat(no other proper 6 in the squad).
