Sharks bounce back with Bloem bonus

The Sharks have taken a bonus point from a 27-10 victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein this evening.

After the week they’ve had, this win will be like manna from Heaven for the Sharks and their coaching staff; staring at a 1 from 4 record heading into the game, anything but a victory here would have been a disaster. Three first-half tries (in a period when the Sharks dominated every possible facet of play) made it clear that a defeat was unlikely, but that final try was an agonising half an hour in the making and the Sharks will bemoan some sloppy play in that second period, as they lost shape and composure for much of the half.

Pressure defence kept the Cheetahs on the back foot and making mistakes; Pat Lambie pulled the string beautifully to keep the pack moving forward and with Marcell Coztee, Renaldo Bothma and Pieter-Steph du Toit piling in with driving tackles every time a Cheetah tried to carry the ball, the Sharks played in the right parts of the field. Frans Steyn scored the opening try, with a pair of Marcell Coetzee scores off the back of lineout drives, within four minutes of each other, compounding the damage.

After that third score, though, things started to sour; first Pieter-Steph du Toit was stretchered off with a knee injury that all will be hoping and praying is not as serious as the one he suffered last year. SP Marais shanked a pair of clearances directly into touch within minutes of each other too and the half ended with the Cheetahs enjoying a rare period of territorial ascendancy.

A poor third quarter for the visitors coincided with the introduction of Heinrich Brussow, who made the hosts suddenly competitive at the tackle point, but with all of Bloemfontein seemingly already having one foot on the plane to New Zealand, coach Naka Drotske pulled his match winners off with a good 25 minutes to play. The Sharks took heart as it felt the Cheetahs had given up and with the likes of Marco Wentzel again setting the tone on defence, it was the visitors who put in a last big effort.

Jack Wilson, on as a late replacement for Marais, scored the bonus point try with ten minutes on the clock, after Coetzee had been denied his third some minutes earlier due to a a technical maul infringement. That final score was a beaut, with Lambie, Odwa Ndungane and JP Pietersen combining down the right hand side before a long pass from Lourens Adriaanse found Wentzel and then Wilson way over on the left.

Francois Venter scored a consolation try for the hosts just on full time, after Ryan Kankowski had been sin-binned for a rather marginal maul offence, but the Sharks were the winners on this day, from start to finish.

Scores:
Cheetahs (10): Penalty Willie du Plessis. Try Francois Venter. Conversion Francois Brummer.
Shharks (27): Tries Francois Steyn, Marcell Coetzee (2), Jack Wilson. Conversions Pat Lambie (2). Penalty Lambie

  • Congrats Sharks! Went to sleep for most of that second half but we came away with a 4 try bonus point so I won’t complain too much.

  • Happy for the win….felt a bit like Jake White winning (boring) rugby.

Tsietas seemed as though they already had one foot on plane for their tour.

The Stormers/Chiefs game before this one set the pace, and most people (including everybody at SS) were hoping for more of the same.

So it’s not really a dig at the Sharks necessarily, but rather the game as a whole. Tsieatas also really didn’t help to add any excitement to the game.

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : I give them credit for playing Jake White rugby and winning. The debate around rugby style, for me, is settled: that’s the way they must play. I respect Gary Gold’s initiative to try and play exciting rugby but the sharks proved today that when they keep it simple with their monster pack in charge and minimise risk rugby, it pays dividends for them. Hopefully that is enough to contest against the more enterprising NZ teams, like the Chiefs. I don’t think they are on form (yet) but who knows, maybe in a few weeks they’ll start to gel.

  • @robdylan (Comment 25) : You are accountable for the opinion of the fan base?

With all due respect, what is the point of allowing discussion if you are actively going to tell people they can’t have a negative opinion?

We won playing shit rugby, as previous seasons have proven that works, until you get to the knock outs at which point it doesn’t. Did we win the game sure, but we never played any better than the last few games that we lost, we just beat an even worse team.

Should anyone that doesn’t agree with you look for another source of Sharks news?

  • @The Great Couch Shark (Comment 30) : The coaches possibly did what Morné suggested, and basically reduced the amount of instant changes to just a bare minimum.

First master these, then add one new skill (and expectation) at a time….it might have been a case of wanting too much too quickly.

In which case I agree with you, play this conservative style and consolidate the season, whilst cultivating a more exciting running style of rugby in the background.

  • Nice pleasant surprise as the Sharks grab a bonus point, and did that ref help the Cheetahs out in the 2nd period or what?

He aloud them so much more time on the ball at ruck time than us, and as much as Brussow looked good when he came on? I feel only 1 of his steals were legal, I say this because in the other steals he was not supporting his own weight and had his hands on the ground before pulled them onto the ball.

  • I would like to weigh in on the positive/negative debate above:
    1. Of course everybody has the right to air their opinions.
    2. I get what Rob is saying though: sometimes it would help if comments were a bit more balanced. Some comments a very harsh and one-sided and don’t seem to make much effort to at least give credit where it is due. It might also help to recognise that how you say something counts at least as much as what you’re saying…
    3. It seems to me as if a lot of people think there are only two positions on the switch that is rugby style: conservative/boring 100% and attacking/throw-it-all-over-the-place 100%. If a game is not the latter then it gets stuck straight in the conservative/boring 100% box! Clearly today – with such huge pressure to win – called for a more conservative approach…and I think the boys pulled it off well. But that certainly doesn’t mean it was all boring and that there was no enterprise shown by the boys. There was one backline move that had my heart beating a lot faster: it involved a dummy runner, a Lambie wrap around and the creation of a bit of space out wide. A kick was put through that was marginally too far…otherwise Mvovo would have had a real chance of scoring. The boys are definitely playing with more enterprise, even if there is still a lot of kicking.
I for one am SUPER CHUFFED with today’s game and with the result, even if it is clear that we still have much to work on!

Instead the last Varsity Shield game he picked up a bit of a groin strain that will probably keep him out for 2 weeks…that means he should miss only one game and be back after the bye week for the Impi…

Bottom line, get the ball out of the scrum as fast as possible (hooker hook, locks channel, scrummie clear).

  • one thing we have to concede was that the Sharks lost shape drastically when Steph went off.

You could tell that the team was incredibly worried about their team mate and friend and that affected their focus.

If we want them to be machines, we should slate them for that. I think it makes them more human and I’ll do no such thing.

  • Nothing wrong with fans having high expectations. I want the Sharks to win every game.

The problem arises when the union/team consistently performs below expectation. If you’d told me in the late 90s (when the Sharks were awesome) that they’d never win Super rugby in the next decade or half way through the next, I’d have laughed at you.

So, there are issues for us all to discuss. It’s just what fans do.

The guy is seriously bitter man.I loved Ashwin’s put down of him when he was questioning J.P running sideways ,Ashwin’s comment was don’t you think J.P has enough experience to know the line’s that he is running.I think Frans and J.P at 12 and 13 are going to be hugely successful.
But still and I sound like a stuck record S.P must go,three wasted kicks out on the full, losing the ball forward twice in the tackle, and getting beaten in the air twice.
If the coaching staff have any thing else in mind at 15 next game will be a great time to try it.
Chiefs are a team that will really capitalise on this weakness at the back.
Also somebady needs to stop Reinarchs charged down box kicks,he must have had one in every game.
But all in all.I feel a lot beter about this team this week.and fuck Nick Mallett

  • There was nothing wrong with how the Sharks played. They did the basics right and gained maximum points away from home. That’s significant.

    The haters are just suurgat.

But the peeps at the union are well advised to not read the blogs. To much vitriol and too little value. What do they expect?

  • What upsets me is that this team keeps on dropping balls, keeps on making inaccurate passes, supporting players take too long to get to the ruck and therefore prevent us from getting quick ball or increase the risk of us losing the ball, SP keeps on making aimless inaccurate kicks, the players have no conviction when they have the ball, they seem not to know what to do and how to create space for your outside man, guys crab, guys like Frans Steyn and JPP hold on to the ball for too long and don’t understand that their tactics allow the scramble defence to recover. You see Rob, I can accept boring rugby, hell, I even respect the Bulls because the shit they do they do it with 100% conviction. We struggle with basics. Don’t know how many direct kicks SP has made so far or how many basic penalties Kanko has given. For me the effort is also questionable, I wish all the players would have PSDT, Marcell and Bothma’s work ethic. As a team we still have no respect for the ruck, this is a problem that goes back to 2008. We send one player to try steal the ball hence the high number of penalties. The negative impact is that the players expect their team mate to get the ball and therefore arrive too late to the ruck if things go pear shaped. Sorry Rob, I can’t accept this from a team with such big names. All the glass half full guys can accept it. I can’t. We are failing to execute the basics of rugby. Catch, pass, run straight with ball in two hands, once you have made a break, don’t be an individual -pass the ball to the player that will make more metres with that ball and support him. Look at De Allende!! Failing to execute HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY.

As Rob said, once PSdT went off, the boys seemed less focused (which is to be expected) and struggled to put 50 past a sorry looking Tsietas.

But it’s also a fans right to acknowledge when that criticism has been corrected.
Sports teams live off of supporter passion, and if you are passionate enough to live on a site like this then you are a special fan.
It would do the powers to be at Kings Park the world of good to monitor the temperature on this site.
These are the people who keep your union alive.
Sharks turned it around in a tricky game, now we need to maintain that momentum.
Saturday is a very important game for us,if we win this one,we are back on track.
Just such a pity that we are now being forced to rest the very payers who are vital for this success.

Just a few thoughts regarding the criticism provided here. While I completely understand the need for some to vent their frustrations, we have to understand that our public criticism will most likely have a negative effect on the team. In most cases, when criticized publicly, people will become defensive and resent the change that is being asked of them. For criticism to be effective, it must first come from a desire to help or improve the person (not just to point out negative points and flaws), second it should be presented privately, and last should be presented in a positive way with suggestions on how to address the “issue”.

Just something to think about if we truly want to help the team we clearly all love so much. ;-)

Running up and down SUPPORTING his Team…they are a low level team, they loose, they make mistakes… But he Supports them… That is a supporter… We turned a first round lost against the same opposition into a bonus point victory… That bonus point was for scoring FOUR tries.. We managed to improve our scrumming, we tackled with purpose. Rugby is not just about running… There is scrums, lineouts, malls, rucks…. Yes we are a work in progress… The team worked on what went wrong last week and improved. Come one guys… BLACK and WHITE… NOTHING ELSE MATTERS !!!!! WELL DONE SHARKS

With his mobility and athleticism a 120kg’s is just too much for those knees. The way he hurt himself yesterday didn’t even look serious and that’s why im hoping he will only be out for 4 to six weeks. • We should be proud of the boys for going to Bloem and coming back with 5 log points.

However, the flack bloggers on here have to endure for airing their opinions, no matter how un-pc, is ridiculous. We don’t all have the same expectations, some are more emotional and others like to watch, wait and then comment.

At the end of it all, some see the errors which the players repeat game after game and worry about the consequences in the greater scheme of things while others disregard them because of the short term result.

Is this the difference between a fan and a supporter?

Whatever the case may be, if one is objective and compares the obvious differences in structure, skill and execution between the Sharks and the teams likely to be title challengers, the differences are worrying.

This is simply an observational statement and I think it’s wrong to crucify those who are more critical in their approach. Good on you if you manage to support blindly, because ignorance is bliss, but to many it simply doesn’t work that way.

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 101) : I agree with the general sentiment. Of course I would also point out that:
    a. not all criticism is accurate;
    b. some critics don’t observe the positives at all; and
    c. not all guys who express positives ignore the issues that are there.
Your comment as it stands reads a little bit as if the guys who criticise are objective and the guys who don’t are subjective. Of course that is not the case. Reading this thread alone will show that some of those who criticise and some of those who don’t are very subjective…and that some of each are (or are trying to be) objective.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the Sharks are clearly not the finished product – they have plenty of consistently concerning areas to work on. But they are also not just hond kak, they are not doing everything wrong and I reckon they need some appreciation, thanks and praise along with objective discussions about shortcomings.

  • It’s very strange reading a lot of the above. I think the Sharks played better than they have for a long time and this game was anything but boring! I think it may be that they are still perfecting the game plan that Gold has “constructed” There was evidence in this match that the plan could be coming together. As long as there are not too many Bok interruptions, things may be on the up in a big way. SP certainly did appear to kick aimlessly at times but he made some telling tackles which was evidence that he was starting to truly deserve his position in the team. I am very proud – I thought the boys gave it their all in this game and that they will start to be even better.

I’ll definitely pray for Pieter-Steph du Toit. He certainly deserves a good result tomorrow!

Also ever so slightly disturbed by the attempts to muzzle freedom of expression… You chaps, for illustrative purposes only, would stand no chance in the rather more critical environs of, say, the English Premier League. If things are going tits-up, I’d expect fans to be talking about it. As I said earlier, it’s just what we do. (says someone who gets up at all hours to watch the Sharks play whenever possible, and follows Sharks news daily – why would he do so if not a ‘supporter’?) #See the wood for the trees.

BUT lets not jump on the all is good again bandwagon..Cheetahs gave up by half time which was shown by their substitutions. Our injuries esp PSDT will be a setback. And the number of penalties the Sharks continue to give away hampers all the good stuff they do and there was definitely some good stuff.

  • @Feather (Comment 123) : No harm in criticizing mate, but there also has to be some form of sensibility, Yes things are not perfect, yes SP is playing KAK blah blah blah.

Lets put some perspective on the current situation.

    1) JW walked out and resigned
    2) New coach is signed which can only start once our season has kicked off
    3) some players, Springboks at that did not participate in pre season training as they were still in Japan till our 3rd week of SR
    4) A few key injuries etc

The key to the Stormers is they all had a lengthy pre season together, we did NOT
Yes some players are out of form, and I too have called for SP to be dropped as an example, But week before last when SP actually did not have a bad game I gave credit

    5) We have been losing as we all know and surely we needed to WIN first? pretty rugby will come.
    6) Not only did we win? we won with a bonus point.
    7) A team needs to be playing together for w while to GEL, please see where we have had the same team for at least 3 or 4 weeks??, we have not, this is why as much as rotation is needed it also has it’s side effects, we rotated Jannie and game Matt a chance, WHAT WAS THE RESULT?

What I am saying is look at all that has happened before the season even kicked off.

This weekend it seems we will be seeing , Lambie, Reinach and Mvovo rested, you think this will not harm our backline and cohesion? think again.

The TEAM is getting no continuity and thus the players with the mixing and matching are struggling to link into a solid unit.

Let’s hope Lambie is subject to a special set of rotation planning, especially since he missed most of last year’s SR.

Im not one to be sympathetic to this team and coach not gelling excuse- im sorry but that is all the Sharks own doing. Yes players dont select themselves but then who takes accountability- the coach? coaches? CEO?
If the excuse of poor handling and discipline is a lack of cohesion then they should have just picked the guys that were there all preseason.

The Sharks are the fans, and I for one won’t accept a sub standard performance,at least I won’t keep quiet about it.
Having said that I will always be grateful for a win no matter how ugly ,how lucky or how close.
And I will never be happy with a loss no matter how pretty, how unlucky or how close.
Unlike Nick Mallett,I thought our ugly win was a thousand times better than the Stormers very pretty loss

What impressed me most was the defence this week and the commitment, which was the biggest difference from the previous games. Even at one ruck you saw Bissie directing the defenders. We’ll need this and more against the Chiefs!

  • @The hound (Comment 152) : I agree re. centers and i like Esterhuizen off the bench so would keep that combo of 3. My cocnern is lock as i dont think Wentzel is like for like with PSDT- just leaves something missing- id start Giant and Botha. I like the look of Dan Du Preez…a forward that can pass is a rare thing. Can Terra cover lock…curious? Up front…Chiefs have a heavy tight 5 so with Jannie and Chadwicks dodgey binding i foresee a penalty concern. But mayb 2 heavier locks will help? And did anyone else think Hoffman looked fairly decent when coming on esp in his defense?

But if Hoffman can come on and show that intensity on defense late in a game it will serve us well as we do leak line break close to the ruck etc. Thoughts reg starting Giant and Botha…could it work? With Kanko there it helps lineout options too. If Coetzee rested i would assume Terra to start…although like i said i liked the look of DuPreez.

Judging by the way the Streamers crushed the Chiefs scrum, I’d be happy to see the same guys take the field. Chiefs were only interested in getting the ball out of the scrum, and then playing from there.

Its up front and around the fringes that our defense is sometimes lacking- esp without PSDT and Coetzee probably. Wentzel will help during lineout time and disrupting their first phase ball.

  • Howzit Sharksworld;

Trust we are all standing in solidarity for our fallen lock, and standing behind him as he has to undergo another long rehabilitation.

As for the game, yes; there are many facets that are still needing a lot of attention, but right here, right now, I will take this victory and celebrate 5 points!

We must not lose sight of matters, we are only 6 points behind the Stormers.

We cannot play the open game against the Chiefs, and need to shut them down and shut them out with a dominant forward game and set-piece game.

Our scrums, breakdowns, and lineout along with acute tactical kicking will go a long way to ensure victory.

I would play JPP on the wing and shift Odwa to the Fullback position. We need to shore up the 13 channel with a solid defender.

    An intriguing game awaits!

Yeah, agreed on the approach, we need to play percentage rugby against The Chiefs, they are masters of broken play, and we need to play aggressive rugby, and basic percentage rugby, we need this win – and to do it any other way would be a certain loss. We are a bit at 6s & 7s when it comes to approach, so yes, no doubt we need to stick to our strengths and ensure the victory. SP kicking out on the full cannot happen this weekend, and I feel for this game he needs the cut, put someone with a more educated boot at the back.
