SARU clarifies player rest agreement

I’m sharing the following release from SARU’s Corporate Affairs department in its entirety:

Springbok player management during Vodacom Super Rugby

In light of numerous queries and to assist media in reporting the understanding reached between SARU and the participating franchises in Vodacom Super Rugby please note the following:

· At a pre-season meeting between SARU’s CEO, the Springbok Coach and Rugby Department staff, with union CEOs and coaching representatives the desirability of managing the playing time of an identified group of Springbok players was agreed.

· Two principles were identified as being ideal:
i) That players should not play more than five consecutive weeks.
ii) That certain Springbok players should have a number of weeks of rest during the tournament (two to four weeks depending on each player’s personal needs and position and the franchise’s playing resources). Note: Bye weeks are not considered as a rest week (although they do trigger a restart of the count of consecutive weeks) while injury weeks are ‘invisible’ (i.e. a player injured for two weeks during the first seven weeks of the tournament would be regarded as having played five consecutive weeks at the end of week seven).

· The understanding is not legally binding.

Jurie Roux, CEO of SARU, said: “The players are primarily the assets of the Unions and they will have their different dynamics and needs at different stages of the season.

“We worked towards the understanding to prioritise Springbok readiness for the international season and the Rugby World Cup but we realise it is a balancing act for coaches in terms of juggling their union’s needs and the national interest.

“The important thing for SARU was to take the initiative to try and find a solution to questions relating to player workload. If we get 90% compliance during the season it will be a 100% improvement on where we were a year ago when no player could expect any break.

“If franchises feel they are unable to stick to the letter of the understanding that is less than ideal but we would expect them to stick as close to it as possible in the interests of the Springboks.”

  • Ok great news as it means it is still in Gold’s hands to rest or not to rest a player.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 1) : Spot on. It means that we don’t need to pull all our guys out ahead of the most important match of the season.

The proviso, I’m sure, is that the coaches cannot push “that button” every week. I would expect that Lambie, Marcell, Cobus and Bismarck would all need to sit out the Force game.

Makes no sense. So in other words it does count as a rest week? :?:

  • @Ben (Comment 3) : @vanmartin (Comment 8) :

That wasn’t well explained. Let me try to clarify.

    There are two different requirements.

    1) Each Bok player must have between 2-4 weeks’ “rest” during the season
    2) No player should play for more than 5 consecutive weeks.

Those two requirements are not related to each other.

So the coaches are responsible for ensuring that, say, Pat Lambie gets at least 2 weeks “off” during the season and should scheduled those in such a way that he never plays 5 for consecutive weeks.

A buy week resets the “5 week” counter but doesn’t count as a rest week.

Take Willie le Roux, for example. He played one game, then had a bye week, then played 3 more games. He can play 2 more games, in other words, before he “must” be rested. Drotske still has to give him at least 2 weeks off, though, at some stage during the season, because the bye weeks don’t count.

Did I make it clearer, or even more confusing?

They have earmarked, per player, how many weeks they want. so it’s 2 bye weeks + 2-4 other rest weeks depending on the player in question

It could be that someone is being rested for example Mvovo or Odwa, then maybe a Jack Wilson will come in for them
