Sharks XV to come out firing

Sharks XV coach Ryan Strudwick can not be accused of much subtlety – nor of keeping his powder particularly dry – when it comes to the line-up chosen for this weekend’s Vodacom Cup opener against the Border Bulldogs at Kings Park.

With a pack that would be considered strong at Currie Cup level, and a smattering of Super Rugby experience down the attacking axis of the backline, this is not a side to be toyed with. While it will, of course, be hard to maintain this level of experience in the side throughout the competition (particularly when the Super Rugby squad goes on tour) Strudwick certainly has the right pieces in place to ensure a successful season; then again, we tend to say that every year!

Of the starting pack, props Thomas du Toit and Matt Stevens (a capped international) boast Super Rugby experience, as does lock Etienne Oosthuizen, hoping to use this opportunity to build up some match fitness after an injury sustained in pre-season. Monde Hadebe (at hooker), JC Astle (lock), Khaya Majola (flank) and Johann Meyer (number 8) all played Currie Cup rugby for the side last year, with 19-year-old Jean-Luc du Preez the only player in the pack yet to taste senior rugby. Twin brother Daniel made his Super Rugby debut last week, of course, and Jean-Luc will be keen to show that he got his fair share of the du Preez family skills.

Halfbacks Stefan Ungerer and Fred Zeilinga know each other well and have both played many times at higher levels than this, as have centres Heimar Williams and S’bura Sithole. The latter picked up an injury in the first-round Super Rugby game against the Cheetahs and like Oosthuizen will look to build match fitness with the Sharks XV ahead of a return to Gary Gold’s matchday 23.

Namibian winger Alcino Izaacs joins Sizo Maseko and Jaco van Tonder (both of whom have Currie Cup experience) in an exciting back three. Fullback van Tonder, of course, also has three Super Rugby caps to his credit but will look to make a big statement this season in a position where the Sharks are a little short of depth.

The bench includes a number of younger players hoping to make their mark; prop Marne Coetzee, lock Hyron Andrews and utility forward Sias Koen have all played age-group rugby, as has Super Rugby squad member Franco Marais (who earned a cap against the Highlanders last year). Hanco Venter, Legend Marwana and experienced Lionel Cronje complete the bench contingent.

Sharks XV: 15 Jaco van Tonder, 14 Alcino Izaacs, 13 S’bura Sithole, 12 Heimar Williams, 11 Sizo Maseko, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Stefan Ungerer , 8 Johann Meyer, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Khaya Majola, 5 JC Astle, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Matt Stevens, 2 Monde Hadebe (capt), 1 Thomas du Toit.
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Marne Coetzee, 18 Hyron Andrews, 19 Sias Koen, 20 Hanco Venter, 21 Lionel Cronje, 22 Nkululeko Marwana

  • @markm (Comment 2) : No disresepct to the Kings, but wouldn’t this side be stronger (on paper at least), than any side they can put out for Super Rugby with their CURRENTLY contracted players? (Note: I say currently contracted as I’m sure they’ll have to do major recruiting before next year).

  • @StevieS (Comment 5) : Our VC side got thoroughly stuffed by the Kings at home last year. Lets hope for better things this year. Bodrer rugby is in such dire straits that I dont think anything will be able to be read from this game.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 6) : I remember that very well, that’s why I said on paper lol

I think a lot of the guys get very negative at having to play Vodacom Cup instead of Super Rugby, so it does impact on performances and team cohesion.

My point was that this is a quality side and that they should do well.

Border Rugby is a balls up. I see they’ve got former South Coast Warriors coach Paul Flanagan involved in their set up.

  • It is a strong VC side but as has become common of late from Sharks XV sides the players become quite individualistic as they trying to show off what each can do. Hopefully Sturdwick can get them all aligned in playing for the team first

  • @StevieS (Comment 7) : They are so fraught with all things not rugby related that some serious intervention is required. Sad state of affairs for a once very proud union.

Maybe Straueli should go back there and sort them out.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 10) : I hope so.

@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 9) : They need to lose all of the politics and in-fighting. Very sad to see what Boet Erasmus Stadium looks like.

@SheldonK (Comment 8) : You hit the nail on the head. They need to play as a team. Best we ever did was make the Finals, then the Valke and Pampas just destroyed us. I remember Tjopie Viljoen destroying us with 60m+ kicks.

  • I’m surprised Thomas Du Toit is not playing SR this weekend. Chadwick has improved immensely at scrum time but I’d think we would want to play Thomas against the Chiefs in an attempt to keep the pack as solid as possible to limit their chances of getting clean ball come second half. Especially from the 65th minute as that is when those guys seem to really hit their straps.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : Truthfully, it’s my own opinion from watching the guys play. I rate Thomas a better scrummager and Chadwick better in the loose. Although like I said I feel Chadwicks scrummaging has improved dramatically, I just rate Thomas a better scrummager. I actually thought this view was widely shared, but maybe not.

  • @Michael (Comment 16) : Thomas has come back from injury, and needs full game, which he will get here.,and not in the first team.
He is still very young, probably the youngest in that team

  • Good Vodacom Cup team once again on paper, lets hope the boys can deliver this year and not experience too many disruptions along the way.

Personally I wouldn’t mind this centre combo playing against Chiefs on Sat. Will be interesting to see how that goes.

Must be tough for Lionel to sit on the bench for Vodacom Cup side. What a waste, but what can you do when there is such depth.
