Wentzel starts for Sharks

Gary Gold, in naming his Sharks team to face the Chiefs at Kings Park on Saturday, has made just one injury-enforced change to the starting ine-up that recorded a bonus-point win over the Cheetahs. Marco Wentzel moves from the bench to replace the unfortunate Pieter-Steph du Toit in the second row.

Wentzel is, of course, a capped Springbok too, but one of slightly earlier vintage than the man he replaces. Interestingly, both players boast just two test caps – du Toit’s were earned on the 2013 end of season European tour, while Wentzel’s came under similar circumstance way back in 2002. The pack this week again contains only players with test rugby experience, with six Boks, an Englishman and a Namibian in the mix.

Giant Mtayanda comes into the match 23 this week, occupying the replacement lock spot, with Waylon Murray replacing Jack Wilson the the only other change to the bench.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Renaldo Bothma, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Marco Wentzel, 4 Mouritz Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis (capt), 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Subs: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Dale Chadwick, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Giant Mtayanda, 20 Daniel du Preez, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Andre Esterhuizen, 23 Waylon Murray

  • All as expected except Murray? Yes for me that does not make sense to have 2 slow centers on the bench?

  • They could rather have had Heimer on the bench, at least he is a tad faster and could cover wing.

  • Wentzel looked very good when he came on. Like a youngster wanting to prove himself. Going to miss PSdT but i really think we have a great chance against the Chiefs. If Lambie can control and pin them in their half and our forwards dominate theirs we will stand a great chance. If we allow them to play their broken plays we might be in for a running rugby lesson. Very positive we can pull this one through.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 3) : Chances are it will happen which will be very sad, I fully understand why they do not have him on the bench, but at the same time it makes no sense having 2 centers of which neither really have the speed for Wing or FB abilities

  • I like Wentzel there especially against the Chiefs who don’t have the strongest scrum, apart from Tommifuno( spelling?) who is very Coennie Oosthuizen like, and we held him.
It is in the backs that these guys are deadly, kick aimlessly at them and they are going to nail us.
If we kick it needs to go out,and with Wentzel,Botha and Kanko we should dominate the line outs.
Marais needs to be told not to kick the ball, leave that to Lambie.
Marais should spend the rest of the week practicing taking high balls.
First time he kicks out on the full or spews a high ball I am going on the field.

  • I think it is a good team.Question: – Why is the Vodacom cup team more important than being on the team sheet for SR?Fred & Sbu could have been on bench with Murray going to Vodacom side. Whats up with Lionel Cronje? He hasn’t featured much. :???: Can’t see why 5 fullback type players are in – Marais,Odwa,JP,Steyn & Mvovo. Are we expecting an onslaught? SBW won’t be playing but Steyn would negate him anyway.

  • @markm (Comment 30) : Disagree. Steyn would be exposed against the combo of SBW and Nanai-Williams big time. All frans offers is physical defence, which SBW is up too. SBW has skills that Frans only dreams of. Sharks are very lucky that they won’t be running out against the most ponderous midfield ever!

Frans scored a crash ball try, hardly flash! Two off rolling mauls. Stunning backbone play. Admit it Rob, it was a great win, but was hardly entertaining running rugby, more Bulls type rugby.

Chiefs have a backline that can make anything out of nothing even if there forwards are taken out of the equation. If the Sharks’s execution was sharper at this stage of the season I may have felt differently going into this one though. I reckon our best hope is to pray for some rain in Durban.

  • Don’t like Gold’s comments at the team announcement that the Chiefs are favourites (yes, I know it’s the now standard SA psyche to want to be an underdog for some unfathomable reason). But ffs the Sharks at home are favourites no matter the opposition. Every time. The supporters expect the team to win every home game, right? The one thing the Sharks need to shift up is their perennial casual mental approach. We cannot be a team that needs “our backs to the wall” to motivate them to succeed. Embrace being at home and being expected to win.

I don’t think it will be Nick Mallett pretty, and I don’t think it will be conclusive but we will win.
We have a few weapons we haven’t used this year,Frans Steyn’s boot,Mvovu’s pace and Patrick’s brain.

  • @The hound (Comment 75) : Sharks can beat any team on any day….as long as they play as a team.

  • Sharks once again the only team not adhering to the spirit of the agreement with SARU. Playing their boks into the ground. Cheetahs resting Hendricks this weekend, Mohoje, Willie and Coenie next weekend. Stormers resting Duanne.
Sharks already without one bok, want to play the rest into submission!!

Typical Sharks, if there is a loophole, they will abuse it !!

I love that about them.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 80) : Agree!

Probably why they were the team to win my support, as apposed to joining the sheeple up in pre-taw-re-yah.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 82) : Nah I think some steeple in Pre-taw-re-yah, probably hit on your girlfriend long ago, and you still trying to get revenge! Then they still smacked your bum in the Super Rugby final.. How awful!!

  • @The hound (Comment 81) : Lol, Mohoje was to be rested, but an injury threw a curveball on that one.

Maybe they played as if they were on a rest lol. Don’t think it would have mattered who we played last week. Tjarkies were miffed at being beaten in Durbs lol.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 80) : Generally all good folk. I am just using up my weekly stir. Any more and Rob gets all antsy and threatens to ban all “foreigners”

It’s a tough one to have to rest players and still try and regain momentum. It’s worse when you are supposed to be a tournament favourite, with new coaches etc.
