The 13 do it again

The Sharks have somehow beaten the Chiefs, by 12 points to 11, despite being reduced to 13 men for most of the contest.

In a game that promised much, very little was ultimately delivered, thanks in no small part to a niggly, petulant start from both sides. The Chiefs came out swinging, with late cheap shots the order of the day. Hooker Hikawera Elliott saw red within the first 15 minutes, after a bad shoulder charge in his team’s in-goal area connected with Beast Mtawarira’s head. With an opposition player sent off, it should have been the Sharks who capitalised but that numerical advantage barely lasted beyond the next phase, with captain Bismarck du Plessis himself seeing red after stupidly lashing out with the boot when held in a tackle.

At 14-on-14, the contest had evened up again, but it turned pear-shaped for the Sharks just a few minutes alter, with Frans Steyn red carded for a spear tackle just outside the 22. With the Sharks a key midfield defender down, the writing was on the wall; however, it was the elements that intervened to spare the blushes.

Pat Lambie had exchanged penalties with Aaron Cruden to leave the teams locked at 6-all, before Sam Cane’s try off a lineout drive late in the half finally gave the Chiefs their breakthrough. A missed conversion, together with a further penalty to Lambie just before the break saw the Sharks still in touch at 9-11 as the rain came down.

What followed was perhaps one of the great displays of sheer tenacity from the Sharks, although to be fair the Chiefs also failed to adapt to the inclement weather and conceded possession regularly through poor handling as they tried to speed up the game. With the Sharks scrambling madly – and using their dominant scrum as a good platform – the Chiefs simply never managed to creak through again and it was Lambie, who finally succeeded with a fourth penalty after two near misses, who emerged as the only point scorer in the second half.

BMT doesn’t come in bigger doses than the one the Sharks flyhalf dished out tonight and with two other big name players – and leaders – doing so much to thwart the team’s efforts, it was fitting that the young Durban boy, as stand in captain on the night, was the one to steady the ship.

The Sharks will take the points, but one feels that for there to be progress this season, Gary Gold simply has to get some of the egos in the team back in check.

Sharks (12): Penalties: Pat Lambie (4)
Chiefs (11): Try Sam Cane. Penalties Aaron Cruden (2)

  • Well done Lambie and the Sharks. That was immense and defied all my expectations. I’ll save the comments on the brain explosions for later. Right now I’m just super proud of the team on the field.

  • Great win, no doubt. While I have some sympathy for Frans, I have absolutely none for Bismark.

Thought Lambie was phenomenal, while Beast, Marcell, SP and Reinach were not far behind. Also gotta commend our 2 vintage locks.

Great heart from the 13 who pitched up to play rugby today.

  • 1. Why was Sam Cane (of all people!) man of the match?! Pat Lambie was easily the standout
    2. Bismarck needs to grovel a bit to Gold, his team, and the fans
    3. Scrum…yowzer! a better performance I have not seen.
    4. Chiefs…very unsportman-like and deserve every loss they rack up. Very arrogant and full of themselves**
    5. **Tom Taylor kneeing Reinach looked quite deliberate
    6. Sharks deserved to win that match and were not the dirtiest players on the park by far
    7. What a team!!! I can wear my jersey proudly after that

  • What guts shown by the 13 men left after some stupidity from seasoned players. Lambie was IMMENSE – and Reinach, Beast and Botha was not far behind him at all!!! Couldn’t agree more Rob that the ego’s need to be chucked!
I really hope Bismark enjoys his 6 weeks off(minimum) and hopefully by that time he will wake up and be the player we know he can be. I reckon Steyn will get at least 2 match ban becoz it’s his 2nd sending off in 3 weeks. He’s got this cocky attitude and laughed when he was sent off, that tells me he doesn’t give a shit which is quite sad. And when they come back after suspension they should be benched. Today we showed we can win without them and it shouldn’t be any different in other games – imo.
So next week Fred starts at flyhalf and hopefully Sithole at 13. Backup flyhalf, Hoffman or who is gonna be shuffled where?

JpP can go next, but he is played out of position so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Steyn has been the most useful to date pre-brainfarts, so that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it

I feel bad for Bismarck, he clearly realised how big a mistake he had made, but captaincy is not his forté.

Gary Gold will have to man up, and have a heart to heart with Bismarck and drop him as captain. Maybe Bismarck will be man enough to fall on his sword.

  • Nice. We were at home, so I expected us to win.

Will Bismarck or Frans be cited? Guess we have been identifying the lack of team cohesion for weeks now. These ate 2 of the biggest culprits…

The win kinda justifies the selection furore kicking up in other parts of the country about the Sharks not playing along with the agreement… as long as there is some resting this weekend.

With du Plessis probably banned, Steyn also possibly banned, and Mtembu injured, Pat is the last man standing of our leadership group, nevermind the fact that he is one of our very very few, if not our only match winner. Pat for captain with Ndungane as vice captain, I can’t see it any other way, to be honest.

  • For the sake of argument, let’s say that Lambie is on rest per SARU, Bismarck is banned as is Steyn and Tera is injured, who plays pivot and who captains? Zeilinga and Ungerer for 9 and 10 and Wentzel or Kankowski to captain. It seems that there are going to be a lot of changes come Saturday. But the core of the team that put their hands up last night will be there and they are solid

  • Great performance by the 13! Absolutely brilliant. Lambie and Kanko had great games.

Drop Bismarck as captain. The experiment with him leading isn’t working. At all. He should be out for 8 weeks in any case. If he’s lucky. I feel he’s going to get hit with 12.

Steyn laughing as he got sent off doesn’t bother me a bit. He’s always been like that. The tackle was really bad, but steyn will cool down and have a great season.

Make Lambie captain. Cool head, respectful to the refs. Great player.

  • @JarsonX (Comment 23) : Agree 100%. He is not the same Kanko of a few years ago. Positive is that he actually played better yesterday than he has over the past few weeks. @FireTheLooser (Comment 62) : That is also my view. Even if Sanzar only bans him for a week or two (he will argue aggravation) management need to take strong action against these guys that don’t put the team first. Thor did not retaliate when that Blues player gave him a combination cause he knew what that would mean to the team. Hence I am not surprised when I see the Stormers play as a team and us as individuals. Guess what, the players that play the most as individuals got red cards [email protected]FireTheLooser (Comment 66) : well, players select their own coaches…how can you expect any accountability with a “crap me out, we’ll get you fired mentality”? We are screwed. Why must there be a red card before players show urgency and commitment? More questions than answers. Once again, thanks to the other 13 plus players that put their bodies on the line and pulled this victory off. PSDT and Lambie for captain and vice captain respectively from 2016 onwards.

  • Ok people FFS your team won?? how you all would bloody cry if Bismark and Frans Steyn went and played for the Bulls or Stormers??? Whine Whine Whine.

I am not saying Bismark or Steyn should not have been carded? yes Bismark RED? correct, Steyn should have been a Yellow as it as 3 tackling one player and Steyn alone did not have control of the whole tackle.

When Bismark did not play in the first match we got a klap and all CRIED for Bismarks return, so too we all asked when Kanko, JP and Steyn would return?

Now again I am not saying we had angels on the team, but open you bloody eyes and judgement views as to why they reacted, it is SO EASY TO SIT HERE ON YOUR COUCH AND YELL AGAINST PLAYERS, players that were being targeted from the outset, Knees in back, shoulder chargers, punches, chockings etc.

Again I am also not blaming the ref who I thought had a solid game, The Chiefs how ever came to win at all costs, and we saw their way of making it at all costs???????

Lastly with all that happening what was left of out team, THEY WON, show some respect for the team you say you support and love, part of me says it is a pity we won, WOULD HAVE MADE SOME OF YOU HAPPY!!!!!

No-one is saying they don’t rate Bizzie as the best hooker in the world, but even the most one-eyed loyal sharks supporter has to admit that Bizzie’s brain farts are inexcusable and are starting to cost the team. There was absolutely no excuse for Bizzie lashing out like that. He is a pro sportsman, he gets paid a fortune to be a pro, so we as Sharks supporters ecpect him to act as such.

  • @jonnow (Comment 94) : I Question the assertion that Bissie is the best hooker in the world. He was! Right now he offers only the outstanding ability to contest rucks and carry. A role more suited to a loose forward. His basic skills of a hooker, which includes his line out throws is below par.

Based on that, Stephen Moore, Dane Coles, and Strauss are probably better hookers. Strauss is more consistent, doesn’t have brain farts, and is a better leader.

If certain players are rested, cited, and one or 2 return from injury, this could be a possible team vs the Force.

15 SP (was superb on Saturday)
    14 Odwa
    13 JPP
    12 Esterhuizen
    11 Wilson
    10 Freddy
    09 Hoffman
    08 Kanko

    05 Wentzel
    04 Mouritz/Giant
    03 Jannie

    16 Mondi
    17 Adriaanse

    19 Oosthuizen
    20 Du Preez
    21 Ungerer
    22 Cronje
    23 Sburu
    23 Williams.

I know some will say JP must move to wing etc, but I do not see Gold making changes he does not need to,

Bench will be T Meyer and JL dup on the bench as Lock and LF cover

Fully agree Pat should be captain when he’s playing.

Was so proud of the remaining 21 that defended like Trojans, which is what I said, after last week’s game, would be required.

Frans Styen’s contributions totaled 1 directly out kick, 3 missed and 1 tip tackle. All negatives. Not too different from how he featured in the Stormers match either. The more I watch him play, the more glad I am that he is out of the Springbok setup.

Missed calls which the tmo should have brought the attention to the ref was the strangle. Another call was the dive on reinach that was a def yellow you could see it was deliberate, from what i saw it definitely looked like the chiefs were doing a typical kiwi style of trying loads of off the ball dirty play. Thank goodness they got nailed in a few.
