Player rest requirements and the ban to Bismarck du Plessis have had a knock-on effect for Ryan Strudwick and the Sharks XV, who go into Saturday’s Vodacom Cup game against Western Province featuring a new skipper among several other changes to their squad.

With Monde Hadebe promoted to the Super Rugby bench, another hooker, Franco Marais, will lead the side. Matt Stevens moves from tighthead to loose (replacing Thomas du Toit) with Marne Coetzee coming in to start in the number 3 jersey. Etienne Oosthuizen shifts from lock to blindside flank (replacing the injured Jean-Luc du Preez) with Hyron Andrews earning a first start as JC Astle’s locking partner.

The centres and back three remain unchanged from last week, with Lionel Cronje and Cameron Wright coming in as the new halfback pairing, following Stefan Ungerer and Fred Zeilinga’s promotions to the super Rugby bench. Young prop Mazamo Majola (unrelated to flanker Khaya) and prop-cum-hooker Johan “Mees” Erasmus are new faces on the bench this week, as is Ayron Schramm who joins Sias Koen as utility forward replacements. Samoan Sevens representative Paul Perez also comes onto the bench and looks ready to taste action in a Sharks jersey for the first time since the pre-season warm-up against Toulon.

  • Now on the topic of this thread, am I the only one here who feels the 9, 10, 12, 13 axis could actually slot in quite well in the Super Rugby team.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 16) : Ah so the prohibition on Passover are essentially a combination of water and any of the 5 species of grain, since after 18 minutes this combination becomes leavened, which is prohibited on Passover. Since whisky is made from a mash of grain and water, it is prohibited, rum is made from sugar cane, no grain.

  • @Ben (Comment 21) :  you are also too young to remember seeing Frans tear up WP in the rain and mud as an 18 year old 10, fresh from Murray Mexted.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 22) : Frans showed last year that as a 10, his tactical kicking game is excellent, his defense has never been questioned, and he can take on even the biggest loose forward at the gain line. His weakness is distribution and getting his backline going. Now let’s look at this year and Lambie, who has been superb, but one thing he has not done, and this is not a criticism of Lambie, but rather he is playing to a game plan, is distribution and getting his backline moving. So if this is the game plan we are playing, I honestly believe Frans is actually perfect at 10. Expect to continue to see the cross kicks and kicking for space we have seen Lambie be so effective at this year.

  • A couple combos interest me in this team…would love to see how Cameron Wright and Lionel Cronje combine. Same goes with that loose trio. Also interesting that they have picked 2 mobile and slimmer locks. and then Perez off the bench could provide serious impact- mayb something thats missing from the Super side

  • Yes, some nice combos in this side and good that the centres and back 3 get some continuity this week as they were starting to gel nicely last week with some enterprising play (standard of opposition aside!).

Nice loosies as well, and interesting half back combination. Seems the challenge for this team is going to be how well they can adapt to the disruptions due to Super 15 requirements.

I guess they saw playing a game at Cape Town City Park a little too much of a step down.
