The lessons (I hope) we’ve learned

They always say you learn more from defeat than you do from victory; I for one am rather hopeful that even though the Sharks didn’t actually lose against the Force on Saturday, they’ll have taken the opportunity to learn a few lessons regardless. Here are my top 5.

Cohesion doesn’t “just happen”

To paraphrase Boromir of Gondor, “one does not simply change your hooker and halfbacks and expect everything to continue to work flawlessly”. While it’s tempting to blame individuals for some of the woes (and I’m looking at the lineouts in particular) we need to at least be a little sympathetic to the fact that some of the men brought in have had precious little game time over the last 6 weeks and that some teething problems are perhaps to be expected. The key point here is to make better use of rotation through the campaign so you don’t end up in a situation where a player has to “come in cold”. I’m not saying that individuals are blameless, but it was rather obvious to me that the three main culprits, Kyle Cooper, Conrad Hoffmann and Frans Steyn, were the three guys brought in to replace senior players in key positions.

You’ll play the way you train

There’s simply no way that the fall out from the Chiefs match can not have affected the team during the build up to the Force match. The see-saw ride relating to Frans Steyn’s availability was perhaps the most obvious aspect, but Gary Gold himself admitted that the side had had a disrupted week in training and that is always going to translate into a less than perfect performance on the pitch. The lesson here is to ensure that we don’t end up in that situation again – hey, did anyone notice that we had no cards and no citings after the Force game? That in itself has to count as a positive.

Frans isn’t the answer…

At least, not at flyhalf. His tactical kicking simply isn’t good enough and we’d be foolish to confuse his “big boot” for an educated one. Steyn simply does not have the subtlety or accuracy in his out-of-hand kicking game to be a useful option at flyhalf in the current game plan; nor has he really shown anything with ball in hand to suggest that perhaps he could make it at 10 playing a different type of game. Plenty of people had misgivings ahead of the contest and to this writer, in particular, it was clear as early as the fifth minute of the game that Zeilinga should have been given the berth instead. The Sharks need to rotate Pat Lambie and Fred Zeilinga at pivot and leave Steyn be at inside center.

…But SP may just be

Credit where credit is due, please. SP Marais had a fantastic game at fullback and spared more than a few blushes through solid defensive work at fullback. It was his attacking game that caught the eye, though, scoring his first ever Super Rugby try and then creating another for Lwazi Mvovo quite simply out of nothing. The performance doesn’t erase the mistakes he’s made in the past, but more of the SP we saw on Saturday can only be a good thing for the Sharks. That Renaldo Bothma is the answer isn’t a lesson we needed to learn, of course. The kid has been fantastic all the way through.

It’s time to back youth at 9

The Sharks have at least 3 very good junior scrumhalves (not counting Cobus Reinach) on their books. These players have all shown over the last season or two that they have what it takes to play senior rugby. Conrad Hoffmann, to me, is an experiment that hasn’t worked any better the second time around than it did the first. Please can we shelve it now and rather work on turning Stefan Ungerer into the next Bok scrumhalf? Thank you.

And I’m tired of saying this but JP isn’t a 13s arse. That experiment must surely stop. Play 14 where he’s the best and if he’s got issues then stay in Japan please.

Off topic but can someone perhaps enlighten me as to how Jesse Kriel slipped through our fingers?

Agree with all the points made,Rob (we were obviously watching the same game  ). Frans has said he doesn’t like playing FH,so why put him there?Fred is far better as a like for like replacement.I,too, had my reservations about SP,but he has obviously been reading SW & taken note of all the sage advice & constructive criticism handed out to him. He had the best game I have seen him play in a Sharks jersey. Keep it up,SP.Move JPP to wing or bench him as a backline impact player & use Esterhuisen in his place until Jordaan returns.

On another topic, I see wunderkind Jan Serfontein is losing a bit of his edge that he showed as a youngster. Just my opinion.

  • Good morning all, I see we are still focussed on the negatives, Boy and Girls for me I have done my bitching but it is time to move on. looking at the possible team for the Saders match unless some are returning from injuries, or got injured as Jannie did and may possibly be out with concussion should look like this.

Also not saying this is the team I would select but here goes.

15 SP 2 very good games in a row
    14 Odwa
    13 JpP
    12 Steyn
    11 Mvovo
    10 Lambie
    09 Reinach
    08 Kankowski
    07 Bothma
    06 Marcell
    05 Wentzel
    04 Botha
    03 Jannie
    02 Cooper
    01 Beast

    16 Mondi
    17 Adriaanse
    18 Thomas
    19 Giant
    20 Deysel
    21 Hoffman
    22 Esterhuizen
    23 Murray

Now not sure if for example Alberts is to return this weekend?? or if Thomas can move to TH? surely he cannot be as bad as Matt at TH?

This is the team I would select.

    15 SP
    14 JpP
    13 Sbura
    12 Steyn
    11 Mvovo
    10 Lambie
    09 Reinach
    08 Bothma
    07 Alberts
    06 Marcell
    05 Botha
    04 Giant
    03 Jannie
    02 Cooper
    01 Beast

    16 Mondi
    17 Adriaanse
    18 Thomas
    19 Deysel
    20 Kanko
    21 Ungerer
    22 Esterhuizen
    23 Van Tonder

My feeling is that all the Japan players are in the same boat, they come back and just not in the same league as what they used to be, they are damaging their reputations big time after playing in Japan, and the Sharks are paying the price for it.

How else could we have lost talented players where needed most to smaller unions & they are thriving.Look at Redlinghuis,Maks van Dyk (we need both as cover for front row).Gouws went to Griquas. Won’t mention the Cronje boys for fear of recrimination   Justin Downey & Jean Deysel (coaxed back) went to Japan. The Marais boys went to France.Louis Ludik – the list goes on (oh & of course one of the du Preez went to Province). Why can’t we keep these guys here. I think Fred is loyal enough to stay, but the rest need to be watched.Send Matt back to UK or just open a karaoke bar for him!

  • Great article Rob!!! Agree (for what it is worth) on nearly all points – I haven’t been following the games closely so I just saw Hoffman start that try down the right flank which was pretty good work – so I can’t judge on his performances.

Just like to make a point on Kankowski. I know we certainly are not playing to his strengths in any way but the onus is always on the player on the pitch to put in a performance. He needs to go looking for the ball and running hard with the ball like he used to – and by hard I mean at pace, stepping players and offloading and so on.

I wouldn’t even blame the players. I am very happy with the squad we have. There is a few a prefer over others, but all in all, I feel we have a strong squad of players that should be playing better than we are right now.

  • I really can’t believe that Steyn were that bad at 10. I am not denying that he was, but I can’t believe it.

I felt Fred and Ungerer should start. That was my feeling from the moment I knew Reinach and Lambie would be rested, but really didn’t think Steyn would be such a massive flop.

That being said, with the type of game plan we are plying, you really need a guy in the Flyhalf channel who has been practicing his line kicks. Steyn did all the things I would have expected Lambie to do, he just did it badly.

Maybe that is where one of our biggest problems comes in. The coaches have this one blueprint and they are expecting the team to play to that blueprint and are ignoring individual skills and strengths.

Why would you put Steyn in the flyhalf channel if you are going to ask him to make delicate kicks all over the field??? Does that sound like Steyn … even a little?

Why not select Steyn in that channel and have him and Andre run at the flyhalf channel all night. Get go forward and then shift the ball wide from there.

Zeilinga has a much more accurate boot than Steyn has and if this is what the coaches wanted, then why not select (back) your second flyhalf.

I know they wanted to give Andre a run, but couldn’t they rest Steyn at some point for that to happen in a future game? They might even have to play without Steyn anyway?

I would have practiced Zeilinga at 10 with Andre/Steyn at 12, if Steyn was not available, that would have been much less disruptive than asking you bench guy to now step up.

Frans Steyn is a talented footballer, but I think he and his coaches has long since he first started playing lost the idea of what he is actually good at and and how he should be used. Even at 12, they only use him as a crash-baller, when he actually has a surprisingly good step on him.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 68) : The Force made way too many meters with pick and drives around / through the rucks for my liking. We did not really dominate the breakdowns. Our scrum was great.

The inside backs were poor, but the rest hardly got any ball.

That said the whole team apart from Bothma and SP were lethargic. Perhaps the Chief’s game took a lot more out of them than we realize.

du plessisThe brothers Bismarck South Africans and Jannie Du Plessis respectively hooker and prop signed a pre-contract with the club Montpellier.

According to information from Midi Olympique , the two men would now break this pre-contract. The cause? The arrival of Jake White in the MHR.

For now, the Frenchman staff did not respond to this proposal, but it could in part explain the will of RCT release hooker Craig Burden.

Also note that according to RMC Sport, the Castrais Brice Mach to be recruited if an amicable agreement were to be found with Craig Burden.

I for one think these guys are phenomenal players, but they are totally disruptive human beings.
They are the kind of people that are a law unto themselves and must be a coaches nightmare.
My feeling is that they are going to go so why not now, lets move on and find out what life is without them.
Bring back Craig Burden, and use Jannie’s copious salary to buy another Thomas du Toit

Yes I know you want to sell them all and fire the lot and so on and so on…..

But we are half way through the SR season and actually in a fairly ok position, so pray tell why on earth should we at the time go and throw everything into disarray? why not use common sense and wait it out?

Are you that short cited that you cannot se that even with disruptions these 2 are still far better than any other in their positions in the squad? did you watch this past weekend how we struggled to find our jumpers? hell my friend it should never be about whether you like a player or not, DO NOT GET SO PERSONAL.

I guess you manage a business with anger? your child messes up you chase him out of your home?

Sometimes you have to Manage a player and that’s what the coaching staff should do, because my friend whether you want to accept it or not???????????? Bismark and Jannie with all their faults are still the best in their respective positions in this country.

Man I shudder to this what will happen if Jannie cannot play this weekend? and no doubt against the Saders? Matt will become headless for sure, as it will be plugged up his rear end

One thing is for sure? Thomas had a cracker vs the Saders last year where he had that same Saders front row in turbo reverse.

Pat Howard in place of Leyds

Carizza at 4, Ruan Botha at 5 and Etsebeth off bench

And actively search for a world class opensider, 9 and 10…..but our next coach will hopefully see that glaring defect in the set up….

Not sure how advanced or practical those plans are. I would imagine that throwing him in at 3 in a super Rugby game against the Crusaders wouldn’t be on the agenda.

  • @robdylan (Comment 95) : We don’t really need him at 3 atm, between jannie and Lourens,we are okay. Mat stevens can warm the bench wheb jannie needs to be rested ;)
They should only start experimenting with him at 3 during the cc, will give him a few weeks against weaker teams to see if he has what it takes. But then again, we move a future no1 springbok to TH…here is hoping for a bit of luck and we sign another young player that is great at TH…and then we try and keep him here…
