Sharks named for Crusaders

Patrick Lambie returns to the starting lineup this week and assumes the captaincy as the Sharks prepare to take on the Crusaders at Kings Park.

Also back in the frame after resting last week are flank Marcell Coetzee and scrumhalf Cobus Reinach; both return to a starting team that is otherwise unchanged from the unit that narrowly beat the Force a week ago.

Jannie du Plessis and Jean Deysel have both passed fitness tests, after an ugly head clash saw both of them in doubt. Deysel continues at blind side flank, with Coetzee coming in at open side in a straight swap for benched Renaldo Bothma. Bothma is perhaps unlucky in that he was voted man of the match last week, but he’ll look to make a big impact later in the game.

Frans Steyn is suspended, of course, with Lambie taking over at flyhalf; Reinach starts for Conrad Hoffmann at scrumhalf, with the latter dropping to the bench.

There’s a fresh look to the pine this week; Franco Marais comes in as reserve hooker after a good couple of weeks in Vodacom Cup, while Matt Stevens is also there for Lourens Adriaanse. Daniel du Preez and Stefan Ungerer both may way this week as well.

Sharks:
15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 JP Pietersen,12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Pat Lambie (capt), 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Marco Wentzel, 4 Mouritz Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Beat Mtawarira
Subs: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Matt Stevens, 19 Giant mtayanda, 20 Renaldo Bothma, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Fred Zeilinga, 23 Waylon Murray

  • Still no Sbu on the bench. I really would not mind some more speed of the bench.

I hope Matt have sorted out his scrumming issues. The Crusader scrum is very strong (although probably illegally). Cooper must really step up this week – the Crusader locks compete very well.

  • Must agree with most that Sbura needs to come back into the 13 position, Maybe even Murray would have been a better call as his defense has been very good, JpP defends well on the outside and Nadolo posses a threat with his size and speed.

  • I do not see us just running through the Saders, soif our defense is top notch and our scrum holds up we can win.

My other concern though is how poorly our forwards have played, even though we beat the Force they had like 65% possession. Against the Saders we cannot afford that.

  • Folks, I’m struggling for the necessary objectivity here but am of the firm belief that the coaches know more about the game of rugby than I do. What is JPP offering at 13 that I’m missing? Or perhaps what are they hoping that he will offer? Let’s forego the overly emotional or sarcastic comments on this one. I’m genuinely interested in learning something here.

  • Good side but the guys just havnt been combining well. So perhaps the combos are a bit off. I still preferred when we had Giant start. Sp Marais getting better so id say a concern that there seems nobody to rotate him with but while he getting better let him play. Interesting the Marais/Hadedbe switch. Same Stevens and Chadwick. Wilson and Sithole seem to have fallen out of favour. I must admit i liked the look of Wilson from his brief stints. This guy will be a serious test for the Sharks

  • @vanmartin (Comment 29) : I have to agree, really think S’bura should play 13 more and JP should move to the wing if he makes the team. Mind you, having a very inexperienced 12, I would definitely keep JP at 13, if only for the experience. But then again, I would pick a few different players if I were the coach (this coming from a hockeyplayer/coach), like keeping Ungerer in the match 23. He is not the conventional small scrummie, which is not a bad thing. Give the guy more chances, it helps having a nr 9 that plays a very different game on the bench than the one that starts the game

  • @vanmartin (Comment 29) : I subscribe to your views on the coaches knowing much more about the game than I do so whenever a favourite of mine is not selected I reason it away as the coaches see them practicing, playing etc in various different scenarios that we dont know about and that they are in a far better position to make the call, thus Im happy to believe that the guy wearing the jersey is at present a better option than my “favoured one” (who could be in shocking form but we wouldnt know because we havent seen them due to no exposure)

The ways of coaches is inexplicable. Should the Sharks carry the day against those antipodean visigoths I will confess that I was wrong.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 29) : I also don’t understand it; having JPP at 13 seems to negate all his strong points. He’s an exceptional defender out wide, but I’m not convinced of his front-on defense and defensive organisation at 13. On top of that, he’s excellent under the high ball, and brilliant at contesting in the air (which, at 13 is about as useful as a wooden tit on an expectant mother). He also strikes me as much more of a finisher than a creator (or at least, he did the last time he was on form and playing in the correct position).

One of my all-time favourite players, but definitely nothing better than a stop-gap solution at 13, imo.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 29) : I fully agree. JPP thrives on time and space…which he has at wing and its a position he has proven to be world class in!!

On the other hand we have Sithole, who has been playing Vodacom cup, if I’m not mistaken, and is not injured. This is a player who proved last year (in a dull backline) what a talent he is and can be!!!
    - Fast feet, nimble, strong, FAST.

NOT ENOUGH PACE IN THAT BACKLINE.

Also I feel like Bothma should start ahead of Kankowski given Bothma’s recent form. (and this from one of Kankowski’s biggest fans)

The biggest farce for me in rugby is when a man is selected purely for set piece duties. Jannie du Plessis is the prime example of this whereas Kanko clearly has the talent. If you want to go play NFL then so be it…

JPP should be moved back to 14. This much is probably crystal clear to the whole world by now. I really like JP, thus I feel it’s in his and the team’s best interest that he gets moved back to his best position. People saying that JPP isn’t fast enough for wing any more have no facts whatsoever to back that up.

When he was in Jake’s WC squad in ParisJ.P was the fastest over 50metres from a standing start faster than Habbanna.
You don’t need a stop watch to see he has slowed down, just watch a few live games.

  • @The hound (Comment 69) : I don’t really have a problem with Odwa. My problem is with Sithole being left out of the squad and JPP playing 13. How did Sithole go from starting the first game of the season (even though it was on the wing) to not being in the match 23 at all? If JPP was setting the world alight at 13 then this wouldn’t be an issue, but he clearly isn’t. It makes no sense that you are fine with Odwa playing 14 but you feel JPP is too slow. Does JPP not have any experience on the wing?

  • @Ben (Comment 71) : I personally think Gary doesn’t really know all the players that well and he didn’t see how good sithole was in that few games he played last year.Thats why he’s just putting the big names he knows in the line up.He really doesn’t know what sithole has to offer.

  • @Ben (Comment 70) : That World Cup was 8 tears ago now and J.P was 22,sorry I don’t have a reference for you but it is true, sorry you are probably too young to remember, how explosive he was from a standing start.

  • @tigershark (Comment 72) : Why doesn’t he just watch a few old videos then.I would have thought if we are led to believe that Venter is still in the picture,he would be the one guiding back line selection and especially 12 and 13 ,thats where he used to play.

  • @The hound (Comment 74) : Well that’s my point.Gary said he needs to become familiar with the players when he got here a few weeks ago.So he actually doesn’t know a lot of the guys. And I haven’t heard or seen anything from BV since Gary’s arrived.Thats why he tried Steyn at 10 because he doesn’t know zeilinga.
