Super Rugby 2015: Round 8

The Sharks take on their old foes, the multiple-trophy-winning Crusaders, in our featured match of the round.

Sharks v Crusaders (Saturday at 15h00)

It’s an interesting sign of the times that the Crusaders have picked a starting team that doesn’t include Richie McCaw for this clash. Along with Dan Careter (who also in’t playing) McCaw has been such a talisman for the side over the years but perhaps his age and wear are starting to catch up with him just a little?

There’s an interesting analogy for the Sharks, playing without two of their own superstars in Bismarck du Plessis and Frans Steyn and it must be a bit of a worry for the home side to be going into this crunch match lacking that experience. That said, the Sharks have been properly bolstered this week by the return of first-choice halfbacks Cobus Reinach and Pat Lambie and will be looking for a far more controlled display than the dog’s breakfast dished up against the Force.

History has not been kind to the Sharks against these foes; last year’s shock win in Christchurch was their first ever away success against them and only their 4th overall. There have been 19 meetings between the sides to date, meaning that a Sharks win in this 20th encounter will lift their success ratio to a paltry 25%.

For the Sharks to prevail, they quite simply have to get their basics right. That means no more bad lineouts, far better handling and improved execution when it comes to tactical kicking, not to mention significantly better first-time tackle success than was the case last week. The Bulls showed that the Crusaders are vulnerable against a team that plays good rugby for 80 minutes; the Sharks simply have to put last week behind them and show that they are every bit as capable of delivering that sort of performance as the Bulls are.

I’m going to back the boys to do just that. We lift our game against good opposition and I predict that the Sharks will pull out all the stops and find a good win this weekend. Sharks to take it by 8.

Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie (captain), 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Marco Wentzel, 4 Mouritz Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Franco Marais, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Matt Stevens, 19 Lubabalo Mtyanda, 20 Renaldo Bothma, 21 Conrad Hoffmann, 22 Fred Zeilinga, 23 Waylon Murray.

Crusaders: 15 Israel Dagg, 14 David Havili, 13 Kieron Fonotia, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 Nemani Nadolo, 10 Colin Slade, 9 Andy Ellis, 8 Kieran Read (captain), 7 Matt Todd, 6 Jordan Taufua, 5 Sam Whitelock, 4 Luke Romano, 3 Nepo Laulala, 2 Ben Funnell, 1 Wyatt Crockett.
Replacements: 16 Codie Taylor, 17 Joe Moody, 18 Owen Franks, 19 Jimmy Tupou, 20 Richie McCaw, 21 Mitchell Drummond, 22 Tom Taylor, 23 Nafi Tuitavake.

In other games, expect wins for the Hurricanes, Rebels, Chiefs, Brumbies and Bulls.

  • Lions should win this one. Without Matfield bulls will fall apart. If Lions loosies can capitalise on rucks and the locks on line outs they will have the forward game wrapped up. I foresee some soft tries by the lions forwards. I must say I think Lions FH position is their weakness both Jantjies and Boshoff are sub standard currently but at least Janjies is a good runner so I think Ackerman is right in starting him. If Lions focus on forward domination (I wouldn’t trust the backline too much with all the changes) bulls will hand the game to them. Must steer clear of Pollard’s boot though penalties will keep the bulls in with a chance without too many penalties Lions for the win.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 10) : Even more to Lions favour. They WILL have better set pieces. Without Matfield I don’t rate bulls forwards. Lions have better scrum, no matfield in the lineout and lions loosies better at the breakdown. Forwards are their tactical advantage…my 5c

  • @Zibbie (Comment 15) : Not understimating them but for me Matfield is what keeps their forward game together and Pollard what binds the backs plus his boot keeps them in the running. Without these two I don’t expect great things from the bulls at all. Like I said if they do win I would be surprised but I’m betting not. The Lions must just stamp down authority and not get suckered into a game they didn’t plan on playing.

However , The lions did beat a similar Bulls team at Ellis park during last years SR . So i think the Lions can take this game . But if they will is a different question

  • What a joy to behold these Hurricanes are. keen to run the ball at the Stormers and it’s paying off.

When last did we see the Sharks make a turn-over by counter rucking the opposition off the ball? Seen the Hurricanes do this a few times already this morning. Wonder who their coach is? Oh yes it’s a guy called Plumtree. Didn’t he used to coach the Sharks? Didn’t the Sharks also used to counter-ruck and win possession instead of just fanning out in defence and let the opposition attack at will as they do now?

The most arrogant by far are the kiwis, the chiefs and their stupid cowbells and the crusaders and horses (and horses asses). Believing they are God’s gift to rugby they strut around and it brings me great joy when they experience a loss. Some may call that Schadenfreude, but I suppose so be it.

    Well done Lions.
