  • As Head Coach Gary Gold led London Irish to finishes of 8th and 10th position (of 12 teams) in what was then known as the Zurich Premiership. In May 2008 Gold was appointed by Peter de Villiers as an Assistant Coach of the Springboks. The Springboks were beaten in the quarter finals of the world cup. In May 2012 Bath Rugby appointed Gold as Head Coach of a coaching team that includes Ford, Brad Davis, Toby Booth and Neil Hatley.[6] However, after a lacklustre season, Gold was elevated to Director of Rugby, with Ford becoming Head Coach. On 9 December 2013, Gold departed at the behest of owner Bruce Craig.

We must be one of the dirtiest/stupidist teams in Superruby… To have two senior players like Bismark and Deysel behave the way they have is totally unacceptable!!!

There is clearly no respect for the team or Management at the Sharks… The behaviour of the players hints at a “company” in trouble with regards to its culture and behaviour of senior players!!

    3. Whatever happened to basics? Catch the ball, don’t kick it aimlessly, find a bloody lineout jumper!!!!
    4. Whatever happened to heart? We are men up and they are ripping us apart…
    5. Whatever happened to discipline? Three players up and Deysel has a brain fart of garguantan proportions. If I was coach he could go stuff himself…get lost for two months without pay!! After getting a bloody hiding.
What is going on? I am absolutely gutted, disappointed, disillusioned…

  • What did we know about the Crusaders before the match? We knew that one of their key weapons was counter attacking from their back 3 with Dagg,Nadolo etc running the ball back. So what do we do to avoid this? Well you don’t kick it down there throats and let them run it back at you. You either try to run the ball yourself, (but given our lack of creativity, skills, desire, to do that) or resort to kicking. why kick it just out of the lines and then they run back at us? Why not kick it into the stands and then they can’t take a quick throw. Dumb play from the Sharks all round.

  • Gary, its time to face facts that this is not the year when the Sharks are going to challenge for the trophy…not even close. We have bigger problems than that. Look at the Lions and how they play for each other and the jersey. That’s a team. I know nothing about managing a team, but in my humble opinion its time to drop the guys who don’t perform week in and week out: Hoffman, Stevens, Murray, SP Marais. Its not about the trophy – that is a pleasant but unrealistic fiction; our best games were against the Cheetahs and Lions. We cannot measure up. Please, build a team and let the developing fluency produce the results. This pasting by another team has been coming for a while; we’ve been fooling ourselves with a false sense of security. Maybe less press conferences on Thursday and smart social programs like rugby-ginners. Do your talking on the field. This is 2 and a half hours after the end of the game and its not just emotion talking, this is honest reflection.

Performance was sub-par and there is a lot of questions needing to be asked. But let’s not dehumanize the players and the coaching staff. We are upset, hell there is something wrong if your not upset…But it’s not the end of the road. Just a rude awakening.

Gary needs time, and we need to be better supporters. I had to take a long look at myself and I was not proud.

Next Saturday a massive challenge awaits against the lions !

But rest assured it all fell apart today, and 8 weeks into your tenure you delivered the worst Sharks performance in memory.and it is very clear how we got there, you have destroyed any semblance of team at the Sharks. For the second week in a row the senior leader in the pack commits an act of thuggery on the field..Or entire backline was a serious joke, the worst Sharks backline I have ever seen
The healing needs to start immediately, fire this crap defence coach, get rid of S.P,Reinarch and Murray.

You would think that after the debacle of the last few weeks, the coach would install in his leaders a need to be sqeaky clean and lead by example. All the crap from Gold last week about the rmanagement censuring Bismark and imposing their own discipline on him.Well they forgot to tell Deysel, hell 15 against 13 ,5 metre attacking scrum on their tryline, and you are the pack leader and you get a red card

  • Don’t think Gary understands what he is apologizing for? He should apologise for not doing his job (a job unfortunately that can only be done by someone that has a strong character to make up for all the non experience of the assistants) properly. It took a couple of weeks for Gert Smal to turn the ship around. Granted he had a good coaching team that needed direction. Our team is direction less, they don’t know what they are trying to do on the field. Their level of skill is shocking. Unfortunately Gary, you have a huge disaster on your hands. It will take something huge huge to turn things around, I don’t see it happening with that coaching team. The low light was when Naas Botha couldn’t hold back the laughter. John has made Gary Gold the laughing stock of rugby. It is now that you really appreciate Jake’s quality. He strived under these difficult conditions.

  • If I may ….. offer some advice.

Keep calm and support the Sharks.

As bad as things looked yesterday, it may yet turn around in an instant. Remember the magic run they had, going from no-hopers to finalists just a few years ago?

If you can’t bear to watch another such performance, then don’t.
Wait for the result before choosing to watch or not. There’s a famous saying: “If the Sharks received a shellacking at King Park, but nobody was watching, did it really happen?

Don’t be so angry at the players and coaches and management. They get IT. Their reputations and livelihoods after all depend on IT.

Ask the hard questions, but don’t make it personal. Avoid the “WE-s and the “US-ses”. You are not a member of the team. The players are not your best friends or your mortal enemies, they’re just some guys who sometimes entertain you and sometimes fail to.

Forget about so-and-so who would or would have been a “Savior” or will, or should engineer a “Resurrection” (pun in poor taste, perhaps? :-) ). The coach is there, he will in due time build a team or depart if not up to it. Ditto for the rest of the gang.

Happy Easter for some and Blessed Passover for others.

Spread the love. Erase the hate. Use polite language.

This too shall Passover (more bad puns).

  • I am afraid what happened yesterday is not a flash in the pan defeat – it has been coming along ever since 2013. There are a couple of issues here that should have been addressed on a longer term basis according to sound business criteria.

Let me be explicit. Rugby is a game requiring from management various planning norms – in the immediate and short term a plan to cater for the sport on a monthly basis, there should be a medium term plan and ultimately a longer term plan.

In the first case what should be done in the case of injuries – are there for instance adequate cover for cases like Pieter-Steph du Toit and other injuries – in other words how strong is your present squad.

In the second instance there should be a continuous player evaluation process and a consequential identification of where the squad needs strengthening.

In the longer term there should be a replacement plan for aging players. Let me deal with this issue first – since there is obviously no replacement plan in evidence. Instead of such a plan the Sharks management are not looking at replacement of aging players – they are in fact increasing the number of players way past their sell-by date. One only has to look at recent contractees such as Stevens, Botha and Wentzel to realize that there really is no0 longer-term replacement programme. Unless the Sharks management think that the prime performance years of rugby players start at age 30 – what they are doing at present is a road to nowhere. To add insult to injury – the Sharks contracted a player like Muarray as well and expect a miracle turning him into a useful team member – a player performance-wise on the way down wqho had serious difficulties in getting another contract.

There is really no evidence of an intermediate plan also. Some players perform badly in virtually all matches they play in – yet there seems to be no continuous player evaluation programme and a plan for corrective measures or ultimately the need for idetification of deficiencies in the team. In such a case ther are sources available that should be utilize to correct team imbalances and deficiencies. The most basi principle is to bring through players from their Junior ranks and to identify players that should be targeted for contracting purposes. Lets take an example here. There was evidence that Vincent Koch would be a very good player to have in their midst when eh was at the Pumas. Instead at looking at him – the Sharks entered into a cotnract with Stevens. There are other “Vincent Kochs” around – but no apparent plan to exploit potential outside resources.

In the short term the situation is bad as well. The Sharks really does not have the player resources to deal with short term deficiencies. Take for instance out lock situation – anybody who thinks that the foreign club rejects the Sharks contracted is the answer when a key player like Du Toit gets injured.

Aside from the player planning problems already mentioned there seems to be a serious personality issue in evidence in respect of certain players leading to totally irresponsible performances by some senior players (viz Deysel, Bismarck du Plessis and Steyn) while there are also indications of a lack of team spirit and cliques in the team itself. It is easy for Gold to downplay the recent red cards – but the position in fact is that those instances stem from players who think they are bigger than the game and is so egocentric that they think they can do what they want on the field of play without thinking about the implications for the team as a whole. Those incidents are often enough also the result of general deterioration of performance standards by the player concerned and the need to consequently the use of illegal play to off-set the deficiencies.

The Sharks management should pay serious attention to player management and evaluation and should strive to get a medium, and longer-term program in place for player renewal and replacement. In the absence of that the team is going to go nowhere other than down the tube..

  • Saying the sharks do not plan for the future means you have very little understanding of the sharks setup. you simply have to look at their targeted purchasing at a junior level to understand this.

im not sure whether you know the players personally but you seem to be making many assumptions with regards to the red cards. Out of the 3 only bismark can claim to have done something stupid but to be fair – this came after three weeks of targeting. I understand that you might not like certain players or you might get caught up in the media hype. Deysels was in no way deliberate. He did not jump in the air onto the player or attempt to hurt the player. His center of gravity shifted and contact was made with a players head. Is it a red card – technically yes. Is it dirty … no! Go look at horwells red and you will see the difference. Look at player close fist accelerate and swing.

So the question then is what is the issue? A new gameplan perhaps … a new defensive pattern. Some unfortunate injuries causing set piece disruption and perhaps a different team every week. Late injuries have affected the team on 3 occasions. Forced springbok rest days .. a baby? i dearsay tgat this year referee interpretations have not gone our way and perhaps one or two teams on tge day have just been better than us

  • @Michael (Comment 352) : Michael, you have hit the nail on the head. This is the most intelligent and logical thing I have read of this thread for a long time.

The root cause of the rot in Sharks rugby is the persistence to value and reward the aging senior players at the expense of bringing young talent through.

You could point to nearly every position in the team from prop to lock, to loose forwards, centres and wings and you will see players past their prime taking up salaries and opportunities at the expense of hungry young talent.

I could go on forever citing examples such as Odwa Ndungane, Waylon Murray, Mouritz Botha and Marco Wentzel, but my main question is why are they out there enjoying an extended shelf life with no talented youngsters in sight? These days young prodigies like Pieter Stef Du Toit feel like the exception and not the norm.

The other issue you point to is lack of accountability of senior players. Is it any surprise that there is no respect for the team or the jersey when players are allowed to earn millions in Japan in the off season and saunter back into their provincial teams for Super Rugby? When one team is paying you millions and the other team is paying you thousands, sentimentality goes out the window. You only have to look at Frans Steyn and JP Pietersen as two players who are so wrapped up in cotton wool by their commercial interests that they no longer care about giving 100% on the field.

Watching our number two hooker (Kyle Cooper) throw skew over and over again (and getting pasted by the commentators and bloggers) on Saturday also makes you realize that there is a worrying lack of quality in the young brigade, which is probably why Gold backs the seniors to get the job done in the first place. Where is our version of Cheslin Kolbe?

Try as I might, I just fail to see anything world-class in Cooper, Andre Esterhuizen, Fred Zeilinga and other heir apparents to the throne, with Thomas Du Toit and PSDT being the exceptions, and that is why we are in big trouble if we don’t aggressively recruit young talent very soon.

  • @byron (Comment 355) : No boet, referee calls, springbok rest days and untimely injuries do not cause a once-great team to play like a bunch of clueless amateurs. These things you are calling out are temporary issues that would affect a team for a couple of games but ultimately the class and passion of the team would rise above that.

There are quite clearly bigger issues going on, the most obvious being a conflict of vision between the coach and a bunch of senior players who believe that they are bigger than the game.

  • So much hot air on here.
As one who was at the game on Saturday,I would like to add my 10 cents worth.
It was not the fact we lost that mattered,we are used to that by now.
It was not the red card for an act of thuggery to the pack leader,we are used to that by now.
It was the way we lost .
We numerically out numbered the Saders for most of the game.
Yet they scored at will whenever they felt like it.
I n many years of watching the Sharks I have never seen a worse defensive effort.
Apart from Odwa and Esterhuizen who never stopped trying our backline defence was so poor it was an embarrassing joke.
This is the 8th game played under the guidance of the much vaunted defence coach Horak We should now be reaping the benefits of his expensive input
All the people here who were so happy to see J.W go please tell us now how we miss his defensive patterns.
I say fire him now,if he hasn’t got the decency to resign, and go find that Stormers excellent defence coach Nienaber, and let the healing begin there.
Before we can start concentrating on scoring trys we should first stop the opposition scoring at will against us.
And while we are about it lets find a fullback somewhere that at least knows how to tackle,

Thanks for the comment. At the end of last year there were long reports of the various franchises targeting school leavers to get them into their academies – none from the Sharks. That is where your replacement programme in fact starts and that is where in the past they started with Thomas and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

I know there are some good players coming through – like the Du Preez brothers. However, there are huge gaps as well in various positions.

The other question that is being asked – what is the benefit in contracting players like Stevens, Botha, Wentzel and Murray insofar as future growth and development is concerned – should the Sharks not have looked at provincial franchises like the Pumas and the Leopards to get players. I know the Lions used their players extensively – but the Lions do not contract them directly – they remain on contract with their provincial teams. If the Sharks offer them contracts – they would gladly join the Sharks.

There are very good centers around who are not on contract with the Lions for instance – players like Hanekom and Watermeyer. Why not offer them a contract ahead of a dud like Murray.

One can go on and on about this issue – what I would like to know is who are the youngsters we can look forward to in future and when are the Sharks going to bring them in instead of playing the useless rugby geriatrics.

  • @Michael (Comment 352) : Vision without a mission type of thing. They know the end product they want but the HOW part is killing them. Can’t talk of a high intensity game if the only pure thoroughbreds (Juan Smit type of players – guys that seem to have it all and play the game at 100% all the time) you have in your squad are PSDT, Marcell, Bothma and du Doit ..(I like the look of Dan and would like to see more of him). We talk of a quick game yet pick a number 9 that loves a slow game, we talk of a distribution game yet the players we select at 12 don’t know how to distribute and create space for outside backs. We pick an 8th man whose main contribution is at the lineout which means we lose all the other value we are meant to be getting from an 8th man. We select a 13 that is not explosive, fast, strong and determined whilst someone that meets that criteria plays Vodacom Cup. Agreed, we need to have criteria and KPI’s for each position driven by how we want to play. That will enable us to recruit and select accordingly. KPI for a 12 would be something like if we have x % possession, you get measured by how many metres you make with ball in hand, of those metres, how many times you have kept the ball alive, how many times you have set up your fellow teammates in a better position, how many times you have put yourself in a supporting position after making the pass etc….my issue is why can’t we start running this union as a professional company? In any company people are recruited based on their skills, they are further trained so as to be able to deliver on the mandate, performance is then measured against plan. To give you a picture of what I am saying, Ryan would the auditor who is tasked with doing the accounting.

The Sharks used to be a team which would punish its opponent when the ball got turned over. Those days are long gone, because there are no resources to counter with when it happens.

So what do they do? Kick away absolutely prime possession for lack of other options. I’m of course referring to the days when we used to actually turn over some ball during a game.

  • @The hound (Comment 359) : We numerically outnumbered the Crusaders for most of the game?!? Ummm…while not wanting to belittle your point and while sharing your frustration that, when it was 15 on 12, we bumbled and fumbled and remained poor, I do have to point out that that particular statement is wildly inaccurate…
Without have checked this in detail, from memory we were:
    - 3 men up on the Saders for about 2 minutes
    - 2 men up for about 7 minutes.
    - 1 man up for about 2 minutes.
    - even for about 35 minutes.
    - 1 man down for about 34 minutes.
So we only outnumbered the Saders for a grand total of 11 minutes…hardly most of the game.
I too was very frustrated, that during the time we outnumbered them they scored 2 tries while we bumbled, fumbled and earned red cards. But that’s no excuse for statements that are just obviously incorrect…

  • I have a few serious questions…and please don’t answer them by sprouting stuff about Saturday again. Been there, done that…now I have questions that I would love to have some answers to:
    1. I read this on supersport.com: “Not that White is completely to blame. He was forward thinking enough early last year to approach John Mitchell with the view of making him a succession planning coach, in other words let him take charge of the youth, but the request was turned down by the people who paid his salary.” Does anyone know whether this is true? Does anyone know the reasons for it, if it is? Is Ryan Strudwick’s position aimed at this sort of succession planing?
    2. Has anything been determined/reported/finalised re: the finacial issues that were in the news last year? Does anyone know what the financial state of the union is and whether the accusations or allegations have been dealt with? Could this be a reason why we have such an inexperienced (and dare I say “cheap”) management? And in terms of player recruitment, are we targeting the guys we’ve bought or are they the only players we can afford?
    3. What exactly is Butch’s role? Is he in charge of recruitment? What exactly is his job description? How does he interact with DOR?
    4. Speaking of recruitment, is there any factual information regarding our actual policies in this regard? What is the state of our academy right now?
    5. Is it just me, or is there very little transparency re: these questions and other important aspects of the functioning of the union. I have been involved with several boards and have served on one particular one for a lengthy period. I understand that sometimes sensitive information has to be carefully dealt with so that it does not endanger the ability of an organisation to continue on a good path and recruiting the staff and clients (fans) you need for that. But if there is one thing I’ve learnt, it is that you cannot stop being transparent re: decisions made and reasons for decisions made…
…and, of course, there are times that require brave decisions…and, even more of course, you always need good policies and systems that help you get where you want to go.
Someone please get hold of some accurate information for us re: this. Without getting into that, we can vent as much as we want, we won’t be addressing anything fundamental though…

Two weeks ago everyone was raving about Mouritz and Wentzel, but saved all their vitriol for Stevens.
Most people were happy with our squad.
We spent our money on a defence coach and a forwards coach, who took the Super rugby conference winners of the previous season to a 50 + home hiding in just 8 games.
Where did our stength used to come from ,our forwards and our defence.
Maybe just maybe we tried too hard to fix something that wasn’t broken.
Maybe the reason why J.W left is the reason we are in the current shite.

  • @RedSharkUtd82 (Comment 394) : I also rate Keegan. He and Kanko were a devastating combo. A pity it only flourished when we sometimes played ball-in-hand rugby from around 2007 – 2010.

  • @The hound (Comment 395) : Not sure why that would offend any of JW or Smit?

He should probably have said “too many freestaters”, same thing, but closer to the truth

@Spirit of Rugby (Comment 396) : They were indeed a good combo.

  • Before we get too misty-eyed about Keegan I just have to point out that he was going down hill for a few seasons before he departed and with the rise of Marcel and the staying power of Botes he was benched more often than not.

I have no problem with that and I don’t want him to be back either. Shame about Kankowski coming back. That guy takes 2 balls at lineout time and does SFA else the whole game. He’s up there with Spies in the show pony stakes these days. Japan is doing him, JP, Steyn etc no favours at all.

The Sharks need a coach not a buddy, clearly the players do not respect Gold if the discipline is this poor from senior players.
