Late surge not enough for Sharks

The Lions have beaten the Sharks 23-21 in an entertaining Super Rugby game at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

The visitors, stung into action by the criticism they endured this week, were full of energy and enthusiasm in a strong first half display that netted two tries. After Elton Jantjies had steered the hosts to a 6-0 lead via two penalties, the Sharks sprang to life, with Fred Zeilinga putting Andre Esterhuizen into space with a pinpoint pass. Waylon Murray took the ball in the 22, went to ground and Renaldo Bothma powered over form the back of the ensuing ruck. A beautiful flowing backline move saw Lwazi Mvovo set free with acres of space down the left not long after and the tails were up at 14-6.

This Lions side doesn’t lie down and while the Sharks had been doing well with ball in hand, their defence once again let them down. The first Lions try came shortly before half time, with Howard Mnisi going over after a line-out deep in Sharks territory. Taking heart from the fightback which saw them turn at just 11-14 down, the Lions absolutely dominated terrtitory and possession in the next 25 minutes, as the Sharks seemingly failed to emerge from the tunnel until deep into the second period. Tries to Harold Vorster and Faf de Klerk (a thorn in the Sharks’ flesh all night) saw them race away to a 23-14 lead, which they held right up until the final minutes.

To the Sharks’ credit, they didn’t give up this week and while they still proved susceptible to line breaks through poor defensive alignment, their close-in tackling remained strong. They manfully prevented the Lions from scoring a fourth – even while reduced to 14 men after Esterhuizen’s yellow card for a late tackle.

Replacement prop Thomas du Toit gave the side hope with his late try, coming off a series of great lineout drives, but with only seconds remaining, it was to be too little too late. Zeilinga had a late opportunity to snatch a perhaps undeserved win, but the 57m penalty was just a shade too big an ask for him after 80 tough minutes.

Lions 23 : Tries Mnisi, vorster, de Klerk. Conversion Jantjies. Penalties Jantjies (2).
Sharks 21: Tries Bothma, Mvovo, du Toit. Conversions Zeilinga (3).

  • Better performance specially that first half. The Lions try before halftime swayed the momentum a bit and they (lions)kicked on in the second half.

I was very impressed with Marco though he captained the team very well.

  • Almost had my third upset right if that kick went over…

However, our defence has slipped a LOT in the last few weeks. Where it won us those few games, which we shouldn’t really have, the last few games have been far from good in that area. Most prominent is the fact that our tight forwards have to defend against backs, and that has cost us quite a few tries, at least 2 tonight.

Very little possession in the second half cost us this game, though. And that is where we miss our big guns – the way they can turn over ball. The red cards are biting us – hard!

  • I can not believe that one manipulative selfish loser can be given free reign to destroy 25 years of work. The day the fucking lions of all teams refuse 3 points and go for touch against the once mighty sharks is enough for me. Go ride your mountain bike. Go control your yes men. Rugby player as ceo. Assistant as coach. High school coaches as assistants. Plumtree in Wellington. Mallet at supersport. Mitch somewhere in PMB. All because “I don’t want headstrong people” I prefer yes – men. Don’t I?

  • The front row aquited themselves just fine. Didn’t miss the springboks… Except for Bismarck being able to secure turnover ball. Fred left 9 points on the park. Renaldo plays with the biggest heart and our big guys like Esterhuizen do tend to tackle late and high. Not exactly gutted as I was expecting to lose actually but was hoping for a ‘hail Mary’. My stupid romantic heart never learns. Three tries ain’t bad; just the penalty count wasn’t in our favour and the place kicking let us down

Ryan is correct in saying that friends and family turn on you when things are not well, but as Doc Graven have said – “If you had a friend ill in hospital who needed help, would you visit him?” Everything is not well in the Sharks tank, please support us….

  • I just want to thank the boys for the spirit and determination showed today. Made it easier for me to accept the loss. We had our best loose forward combo there and it showed in the first half. Odwa in his old age showed us a glimpse of what we lack from fullback when SP plays there. Mvovo should be our long term solution there. Sithole also showed why he should be the starting 13. I still think Fred is Sean’s blue eyed boy.

Were the situation different he may have been great or perhaps he would have never fit in at the Sharks. Important thing now is he’s at a club where both parties seem comfortable with each other.

  • Whichever way you look at it a SR season where we lose to every other SA team is simply not good enough. Add in a 50 point thrashing at home from the Crusaders and it is a disaster season, really.

GOLD OUT! The end of appoint-your-mates from our inexperienced CEO too please.

Only the best with a proven track record should be considered for Sharks rugby.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 12) : He tried to be a trend setter by asking the players to decide who they wanted as coach as opposed to having a criteria and evaluating the candidates according to it. He tried to put the players first and some of them i.e. Bismarck, Frans, JPP, kanko etc…are showing him how grateful they are for the easy ride. But hey, let’s be positive. Let’s hope they can build (yes, in round 9) from what we saw yesterday.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 34) : Sharks improved. Besides Fred missing 9 points….we lost the game when Alberts came off the field at half time. Him, Bothma and Marcel are a potent combination and the Lions were not able to deal with their physicality. Much better from the backline. Improved urgency and execution by the Sharks.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 33) : From what I’ve seen he looked really good but whether we agree or not he’s most likely queued behind Jean, Jan, Damian (let’s assume Frans is out for good) while at 13 we have pretty much squat. Harold has speed, ‘hy het n lastige sy-stappie’ and I’ve been impressed by his tackling. Outside centre may be the way to expedite him into a Bok jersey. I’ve a feeling this guy could adapt pretty quickly, seems to be a smart player.

  • Since this is a young team the starting point should be the basics. Defense needs work the tackling is substandard. I was disgusted with how easy tries came to the opposition because of poor defense. Bothma did very well but his handling a big concern. Reinach back to his old tricks of kicking away possession. How many late tackles can you make in a game? You keep that up an the ref will start thinking you are out to hurt the other players instead of stopping them. Waylon needs to be replaced I watched the reruns of that soft hand off and it’s clear he is too afraid to tackle or even try put his body on the line. We have the man for that slot but our coach won’t grow him.

  • @BarendL (Comment 44) : I must admit that Waylon Murray was anonymous in the game. I actually noticed Esterhuizen (so did the ref ;-) ), Sithole and Esterhuizen should definitely start in the 15; Fred and Cobus for pivots; I suppose SP will be back at fullback for the bulls; Mvovo should stay and Wilson should start I reckon (assuming the wings get the ball, it would show what he can do – and come to think of it – he has already scored a try this season). The Sharks scrum proved that you don’t have to have a du Plessis as your surname to scrum down against a good lions scrum; good the for the young guns. I thought the locks more or less were not as effective in general play (surprisingly with Wentzel outshining MoMo)

  • Is it only me or did it seem like every time the lions were in Sharks 22 the referee was chiming in ‘advantage!’ however the converse was rarely true? All I’m trying to get at is that the Sharks never seem to get as much benefit of advantage on attack as the lions and stripey underpants wunderkinderen. In particular I remember an incident with a rolling maul that the lions illegally (in my opinion) stopped with a metre to go; no advantage or penalty to the Sharks but a line out was given to the lions. Little things like that could have meant the difference between what the result was and what it could have been. That said, the defence was shocking and that is not good enough in super rugby

  • @Zibbie (Comment 21) : He messed up the Crusaders defence two weeks ago as well.

I also prefer Odendaal at 12, but with Serfontein at 13. JJ has done nothing to justify his place – well, maybe in the Vodacom cup. With Pollard and Kriel in the mix, the Bulls backline do look pretty well organised. Now if Frans Ludeke sees it that way as well, I’d think it still April fools day. But who knows, Christmas isn’t too far of.

Bulls scrums are a mess, and I would be surprised if no Lion prop makes it into the Bok squad this year. Quite enviable.

PS – any chance you want to switch back Lohan Jacobs and take Piet van Zyl instead? He IS a Springbok?

  • Serious injuries to key players, red and yellow card fiascos, a drawn out appeal against one of them, apologies all over the show from the players and coaches (seemingly every weekend now), losses to EVERY other SA team, the criticism levelled by the other SA unions and press for failing to adhere to the SARU agreement, a leaky defence, a back line without creativity and a 50 point home drubbing from the competition’s 7 times champions. Little wonder the team are not a bunch of happy campers. Yes, this season is at peril of going down as one of the worst ever.

    I’m disappointed.

  • If the Sharks can prevent getting relegated from Super rugby this year they will have done well, remember we still have to tour! Poor discipline again (its not just about the cards although surprise another yellow), our defense playing open gates, missed easy kickable penalties, and our forwards trying to pass never mind offload gets quite comical at times. Altho some positives from the game – Franco Marais was good- think we won all our lineouts on his throw. Bothma should be given a big contract if we have any clue. Zelinga looks like he still has splinters in his ass. Sithole’s defense has put to bed calls for him to start at 13. And Odwa at 15 is safe until someone break through- there is zero pace in those legs. Easy fix for Bulls game- start Williams at 12. Get Alberts or Giant to lock with Wentzel. Rest Reinach. Play Mvovo or Cronje at 15 if SP Marais still on rest

  • And just curious: has Brendon Venter gone into hiding now that we losing? Is it not his preseason training that is now not bearing fruit? Paul Anthony’s job description is maintaining players intensity- im not seeing much evidence of this? There is a NZ attack coach specialist on our payroll- im yet to see a few planned moves as yet. As a CEO these are questions that Smit should be asking…well as least most CEOs in business would unless they at Eskom

  • @SheldonK (Comment 71) : There will be no relegation this year. Next year is the start of the new 18 team super tournament – where all and sundry will be accommodated.

  • I just watched the highlights of the game – still on my sabbatical from Sharks rugby. However it was noticeable how full the stadium was with Lion’s supporters. It just goes to show how success translates into bums on seats.

Well done to Lions rugby in general. Not quite semi-final contenders yet – but a marked improvement from previous years. Being relegated actually seemed to be the kick start the Lions needed to get their house in order.

  • Congrats to the Lions. Well at least we all expected that loss – and we even could have sneaked a win. But having said that it doesn’t make it acceptable. If the coaches can’t see Murray is not up to standard they all need glasses!! Was lovely to see Mvovo show off his pace again in a good move!! Bothma and Thomas also impressed, Thomas to start this week?
Pity about our defending though – some BIG ISSUES there!!! Bulls not gonna be a walk in the park. Hoping for more improvement..

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 73) : Arrrggghhhh they should rather scrap SR in my opinion and go compete in NH. Let Aus and Nz play amongst themselves – a Bledislo (spelling?) league lol

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 74) :

yea Relegation has forced the Lions to sort a few things out . almost like a gap year i think ?

But if the Kings scored 2 more points you would never have heard from the Lions again

  • @Zibbie (Comment 78) : SA Rugby needs a strong Lions union. It just shows what good coaching can do for semi decent players. That tight 5 are all good and hard working, nothing flashy, no chirping. They have ball players at loose forward. And then throw in backs that love to have a go and you will play entertaining rugby and if defend well win win more than you lose. Compare those points i just raised to the Sharks….eish

  • Sharks need to sort out their defence and quickly. I would actually put an influence factor of 70% on the defence as the reason they lose matches they should win (with the talent they have).

I am really struggling to identify the structure they employ when defending, and it seems the players do too.

I made a comment the weekend RE the Stormers win.

For the first time on tour they defended well, they scored a BP win.

Forget this running rugby kak, it is a myth. Rugby is won by playing a percentage game. The Stormers won with less than 35% possession, so did the Cheetahs.

  • I watch rugby for its enjoyment factor….this game ticked that box.

So irrespective of the loss, I enjoyed this game.

Sharks still have plenty to work on (actually, it’s only their defense that requires a serious fix – maybe SARU can send a coach over to see if he can help sort things out).

Enjoyed Wentzel as captain, calm and confident – with the ability to talk to the ref without becoming “bitchy” or “whiny”.

And our new hooker sure inspired a ton more confidence at line-out time. Deserves another start.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 84) : no theres a process remember .. he first needs to sign for the Bulls ….

    You CANT forget that part

In other news i see gerrie goud says the lions won because we have less boks and our team has been drilled together for longer .

listen Gerrie … these lions players are crap . the bok coach will first consider the sharks 2nd stringers before he picks a lion player . so you should still have slaughtered the lions on Saturday ..
