Sharks lose again

The Bulls have prevailed 17-10 at Kings Park, courtesy of three second-half penalties to Handre Pollard to which the Sharks had no answer.

The visitors dominated territory and possession for the bulk of the game, with their strong work at the collision point – aided and abetted by referee Jaco Peyper in some instances – proving decisive in stifling Sharks momentum. Had the Bulls not made numerous errors on attack (or the Sharks defended so well), things may have been nowhere near as evenly matched as they were after half an hour, with the teams locked at 3-all.

A defensive mix-up on the blindside of a scrum, though, saw the Bulls streak through and score a cracking try just before half time, with Rudy Paige and Francois Hougaard passing the ball back and forth several times before the latter scored.

The Sharks struck back with about their only good passage of play just after half time, as a decent bit of interplay between forwards and backs around the fringes saw Cobus Reinach free Marcell Coetzee up in space. Fred Zeilinga’s conversion say the hosts edge ahead 10-8, before Pollard struck with the first of the three penalties that would seal the result.

Sharks (10): Try Marcell Coetzee. Conversion Fred Zeilinga. Penalty Zeilinga
Bulls (17): Try Francois Hougaard. Penalties Handre Pollard (4).

  • Defence better. Attack suck.
Peyper made two bad calls costing us 6. Losing Odwa cost us more.

    alberts and reinach were good.
    bothma and coetzee was oraait.
locks not providing much, neutralised very easily.
    esterhuizen wasnt too bad.
    murray is useless.
sp is back to his useless form of 3 weeks ago.
fred need to work on goal kicking.
Sbu and Mvovo didnt really do or mean much.

    all in all, still crap…
bulls were better and deserved the win.

  • We came into the season unprepared or not adequately prepared. Some of us saw that after the first few games and realised that all the talk made during pre-season was just the blowing of hot air. The coaching staff realised they were in shit and had no game plan or defensive pattern after round 8.

  • The only reason that we won any games this season was due to our superstar players…with most of them out, we can’t buy a win.

Our coaches are unable to turn this current crop of players into a SR team…all the issues addressed, yet only our remaining superstars are able to make an impression.

It is looking rather hopeless right now….maybe we’ll see a turnaround in the CC, but SR we’re in serious trouble.

  • Walking out of that stadium tonight, there was angry vibe amongst the faithful.
We are not going to put up with this crap anymore
It doesn’t take rocket science to see the problems
one look at what the Bulls have done with Houghaard on the wing, should be as clear as daylight to Gary Glitter .Reinarch is also not a scrum half.
Murray is pitiful.rubbish and Marais is fucken embarrassing.
We are going to get slaughtered in New Zealand, and the only consolation is I won’t beat the game.
Fred is seriously out of his league at this level, and Cronje is no better.
Anyone who still thinks we don’t miss Frans Steyn and Pat Lambie needs to go watch hockey.
One bright light for me was Esterhuizen,he is huge talent, even surrounded by the crap he was playing with.

Fred was awful tonight but the frikkie who replaced him was just as KAK. Not even to mention Hoffman, Murray and SP bloody Marais!!!
How did Beast and Marais (hooker) manage to stay on that long? Thomas and Giant should have been on from bout 60mins I reckon, not that it would have helped much in the bigger scheme of things.

  • Sticking to my guns saying this series is a wash. Only thing left is to take solace in seeing the young guys improving in their positional play. From that perspective tonight was not a total loss Esterhuizen getting better. Reinach not so much. Cycle in some more youngsters especially on Murray and wing positions Odwa doing good work. I’m not looking for the win anymore just focusing on improvements positionally. CC boys not this one. Think long game not immediate, that’s all I can say.

I disagree, the guy behind me was a doos. Bulls played better rugby and the sharks were content to defend all night. You’ll never win a competition like that. What bugs me most is how little guys like Andre estherhuysen gets a chance to do what he’s good at. Although if I were Bjorn basson I’d be looking for the first plane to France. The guy is one of the best finishers in sa rugby and all he gets to do is chase up and unders all season. If I were him I’d be the most depressed man in the world…

They are our last hope we have of salvaging anything out of the season.
Gold and Venter aren’t going to add anything more, both been pretty average in my book.
Gold can caretake the team thru the rest of the season, and Venter can disapear again.
Lambie is not going to be back for a long time, and we need Steyn’s genius in our backline.
We also seriuously missing Bismark’s dog fuck in the forwards.
If both these guys can come back with the right attitude, they are our only hope at not ending up a laughing stock.

  • Our season stumbles from disaster to disaster. Home and away losses to the Bulls now.

Our record in SR against the Bulls and Stormers is now becoming UNACCEPTABLY one-sided.

    This Gold ain’t glittering.

GOLD OUT before the rot gets any smellier. Same for all the useless inexperienced assistants.

  • I can see the sense in suggesting that firing Gold now would be a mistake. Knee jerk reactions almost always are. However my instincts tell me that Gold simply isn’t up to the task and never was. I mean come on, if Venter is to be believed then Gold has done bugger all to identify and shore up our porous defence in 9 long weeks! Yes, the guy is smooth and says the right things, but does he have the goods to back up the talk? Absolutely not! Not a single trophy or sustained success with any team. This season is lost already. We are going to get thumped silly on tour. It cannot get any worse. Making the right and brave call now by accepting that Gold is never (and was never) going to be the man to bring trophies to King’s Park will be the right decision in the long run. Why waste time with what we have already witnessed in Gold by hoping against all hope (praying for a miracle more like it) that he has the ability to turn it around? He has no track record of success. It obviously goes without saying that the useless assistants need to be dumped in a hurry too – nobody involved in this amateurish mess of a season deserves to survive. This is the Sharks after all, one time leader of SA rugby and the epitome of professionalism. The fans expect a lot more than the comedy dished up this year. I am seething mad about it.

I might not be very active on here but I use to post quite a bit a few seasons ago. Back then I said that (during a pretty dismal season) the fans deserve better. I got some fleck from a few people as to the right of a fan demanding better. Well seems that during this season more people feel the same. I’m not sure when the tide will turn but I’m pretty sure that it won’t be this season.

I also wonder if I will ever see my team win the Super Rugby Title. Most seasons start with how great the season will be only for us fans to talk about what “if’s” and “if only’s”. I really don’t want to be the negative type about my team but I can’t help it at the moment. I also try to find answers on here from like minded fans. Talk of firing the coach, all the way to the ball boy won’t help in my opinion.

On a side note…I’m I the only one that gets embarrassed about the sharks ad?

  • I must give some credit to the Bulls. Ball retention was very good and they pushed our defence to the limits. Very happy to see how well our guys defended. Bulls obviously figured our defence would not be up to scratch in such a short time went flat out to expose it.

I think a lot of people forget that our opponents are a highly motivated and strong team that has been under performing and taking a huge amount of flak for some time. They certainly put their bodies on the line in this game just like the Sharks.

IMO the game was lost when a crucial penalty was missed. Has it gone over, the pressure would have been on the Bulls, instead it put us under even more pressure with time running out.

With the trophy pretty much guaranteed to be out of reach. Would you guys like to see us play more youngsters? Knowing that we will probably lose more games but gain some valuable experience for them?

  • I should have taken the hint of the load shedding and not gone out to a very nice joint called ‘Sir Loin’ to watch the game. It seems whenever the Sharks play the Assistant referees and tmo always seem to look for skullduggery by the Sharks. Bulls got away with murder at the breakdown, and that hougard try came from what to me was a very obviously forward pass. That said, the Sharks should not be expecting the ref to be on their side and should have worked to keep possession better. I still don’t like Peyper as a referee and would actually sooner have Angus Gardner or even Andrew Lees. The Sharks try was good (good handling) but why could they not have done a few more of them? And at least half of Zeilinga’s job is to kick. 3 missed opportunities and one last week. 3 or 4 kicks over could have meant 8 points on the log instead of 2. I’m actually glad we won’t squeak into the play-offs because it would be embarrassing.

This week our lineouts and goal kicking went to puke.
Last week Lineouts functioned but defense didn’t exist.

Do they not focus on all aspects of the game, every week?

This group really need to work on playing rugby from 8am to 5pm every day, as they need to be schooled in every aspect of the game every week…

Seems we have the laziest team in world rugby…

A professional sportsman possesses the drive to push themselves, and be on the training pitch for as many hours a day as it takes to be the best…

…but not our group of hippies – and the coaches seem to be enjoying the easy hours just as much.

Personally I think its like Crichton’s novel Jurassic Park where there were ideas untested by the real world and maybe even a touch of hubris and they thought everything was in control but in point of fact it wasn’t. Its an imperfect analogy. That’s looking at what went wrong from an organizational point of view. For the players and coach it’s a bit like that scene from ‘The Replacements’ where they are all talking about their fears and Shane Falco calls it”quicksand” where you’re playing a game and one thing goes wrong which leads to a cascade of errors – which vulgarians in the army call a [email protected]#ck – which it’s difficult to arrest. Mind you, other teams go through the same thing and kick on. I just wish the Sharks would be feared and respected for their rugby once more

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 106) : I think it is easy for us all to say that being a professional sportsman, playing the sport you love should be plenty to motivate the player, and I agree with you there. However that being said, this unfortunately is not the reality. It is the responsibility of the management and the coaches to provide an atmosphere in which the professional players thrive, and ultimately motivate themselves to greatness. I honestly believe this is where the Sharks fall short badly this year. Just to add to that, motivation was not as much of a problem with the Sharks under Plum or White. This just confirms that most of the blame lies with the coaching staff and current management vs the players. Just my opinion, that I motivated MYSELF to write!

  • Professional coaches should not have to coach skills to professional players, they should have learned the physical skills required to play good rugby many years earlier in their careers. Professional coaches should be implementing strategies and game plans and motivating their players to perform. It is an even greater responsibility for a coach who wishes to utilize rotation through the season, he has to find a way to keep those motivated who may not be playing for a few weeks.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 106) : You do make a ugly sweeping statements.
The main problem at the Sharks is that the players that the team invested the most in to win the thing for us are not on the field..
Bismark,P.SDT,Lambie,Frans Steyn,JPP,Kanko,Deysel,Paul Jordaan,Lewies, some payed less than others but each one identified whether likely or not in pre season as a potential match winner.
Take that amount of talent out of any team and even the Mighty Stormers would suffer.
Combine that disruption with the changing and late arrival of chief coach,a new defensive style of play. Different captain every week, and a national press who love nothing more than to see the Sharks lose. The team are on to a hiding to nothing.
Watching some of those boys tackling on Saturday,Alberts,Coetzee,Bothma,Botha,Esterhuizen, makes a total mockery of your accusations.
These boys don’t lack heart, they don’t lack professionalism.

  • One of the things that irks me the most is while we’ve been told the defense went to pot , owing to zero attention in pre-season, the Sharks look totally clueless on attack for a team that has supposedly focussed on that area. Surely part of any successful attack is protecting ball at the breakdown, an area that we were massively outplayed by the Bulls. And Reinach….he is 50 percent of the problem IMO, with the failure to get the attacking game going, as he simply makes way too many unforced errors at ridiculously crucial times for a scrum half at this level. And he does it week after week…is he actually being coached?!
I was surprised to hear Stransky say he’d prefer Reinach
over Paige…for me Paige is exactly what you want from a scrummie.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 134) : That’s the difference between us and the Bulls….when they start to play well they bring the SR trophy home. When we play well during this competition it ends in tears for the fans. We still have to tour and our opposition in NZ is just scary. I hope we use these two weeks wisely….these guys should be given only 2 to 3 days off then back to work. None of this 2 hour working day. More hours need to be put in.

  • Until the Sharks change the way they play it doesnt matter who the personnel are they are going to get the same result unless the opposition has a bad day. There is no urgency in our defense, no line speed, no hitting opposition back in tackles consistently and then there is always the lapse in our defense and we have very little clue how to defend rolling mauls other than give away a penalty. Our attack is so 1 dimentional that any coach with half a brain cell could organise a defense against us. We either bash it up off 9 with a 1 off runner or bash it up off 10 with a 1 off runner…and we do this all game long. Zeilinga looks like he is scared and hardly takes the ball to the line anymore. Both Reinach and Hoffman take about 6 steps before passing the ball allowing the defense to close the gap and smash our 1 off runner. It was like watching reruns of car accidents knowing exactly what the outcome would be. Best comment of the weekend from my wife: “I can pass the ball better than some of those Sharks players” In their defense she did play SA Touch Rugby but still

  • @SheldonK (Comment 143) : Morne had some comments about team culture and playing style the other day. Coaches have come and gone, but it seems the one constant from the Sharks over the past few years is the “one off runner”. Perhaps that can describe our current culture – the team of one off runners.

It seems as though we really need that French flair at 10 to spice our backline up – maybe Smit can organise Freddie one of those retirement packages that he’s handed out to his other buddies.

  • @The hound (Comment 138) : the numbers don’t lie. They moved him to 9 their game improved dramatically and the win loss ratio went up. Their game is now fluid and their current log position is 2. Hope his injury is not bad cause him and Pollard make a mean combination… I would love to see him and Lambie play together. What made Charl special was his ability to speed our game up. I think Cameron Wright has the same quality.

  • Funny I was wondering the same thing a month ago so I looked him up on the internet. He seems very active still and very prominent in the games he is playing for Toulon he is instrumental.

But are we not all grasping at straws waiting for some individual players to be our saviours. Bismarck,Frans,JPP, Deysel they did what exactly to make us look like a serious contender this season?

We lost our opening match against the cheetahs, we lost against the bulls, all these guys were there at the time. Our problems are probably related more to our abilities as a team and missing structures, contingency planning, guidance and coaching and that cannot be solved by individuals.

  • @coolfusion (Comment 150) : Agreed. We need to start building a team culture / structure (whatever you call it) where losing a few influential players due to injury / suspension does not capsize the entire boat. The next best player(s) in the squad must be good enough to adequately fill the boots of the star player.

We rely too much on individuals pulling us through.

    One comment on the rugby.

Mouritz Botha seemed to just run from ruck to ruck. No commitment in the tackle and seemed very disinterested. You shouldn’t wear a red scrumcap and be lazy because then you really stand out.

  • Just saw some comment on Supersport saying that It could be an option to get Steyn in at 10 keep Esterhuizen at 12. If we could only somehow convince the coach to start Sithole at 13. It would be awesome to be able to report game after game how he and Esterhuizen are improving.
I think a pissed off fan base would at least take some comfort and hope from watching that happen?
Also would be nice to see us alternate scrumhalves. When Charl was here we used to do that all the time. When Reinach starts getting stale and predicatable Charl would inject something different, just NOT Hoffmann as the Reinach understudy please.
What is it with coaching staff and hanging on for dear life with these substandard players like hoffmann, stevens, murray, I don’t get it why are you risking your job and season on them?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 163) : And yet he will be in team again next week. I really do not get it. Murray was desperate Stevens on his last legs Hoffmann not really rated. Surely they cost the sharks very little in salary (if not then whomever is signing checks needs to be fired) so money is a low risk, on talent they have failed consistently for the the whole series up to now, so talent is not the reason. On experience they have not shown anything that pulls together the younger players or wins matches.

WHAT is meriting their position ABOVE that of a young eager and talented players, there is NO MORE risk in playing the younger guys since we have utterly failed with these guys in the pack, right??

    Yeah, it hasnt been great.
There wasnt a lot on the weekend that could lend cause for optimism.
The Stormers were terrible and Bulls v Sharks was, shall we say, sub-standard. I didnt see the Cheethas games.

On the bright side, the Stormers still won playing ugly and the Lions seem to be stepping up to the plate.

Oz looking very poor at the moment.

That said, i think the Boks should have enough depth to be competitive. If there injuries however…

I spilled my guts out last week; I can say even more, but hell’s teeth; just what the hell has happened to this Union? Its not the game, its not the same, I can smell something vrot. This Union is just a building with names on the wall and a smattering of Currie Cup trophies. For me to sit there and be more interested in the ingredients on my chocolate bar than the game, damn. Pathos.
